Mayor elect Bill De Blasio is currently organizing efforts with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services to introduce a monitoring device for children with autism. The new administration has partnered with a private company, ID8, to bring BeSafe to market. The goal is to ease concerns parents and caregivers go through if their loved ones go missing and keep track of their emotional and physical state.

The case of missing autistic child Avonte Oquendo has certainly not fallen on deaf ears; the introduction of BeSafe is the first of several proactive measures to be implemented. Efforts involved in locating the child include: search and rescue dogs, video cameras, a search of the sewer system, missing persons posters and fliers filling the streets, subway alerts and messages in city newspapers, and divers with sonar.

New York City and ID8 want to ensure this matter can be addressed with a sense of urgency and priority. Any worry and doubt can soon be easily alleviated with BeSafe | Taking care of your loved ones.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 88 American children as on the autism spectrum–a tenfold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.

Here are some important statistics on why the issue of autistic chil-dren wandering away must be addressed:

Roughly half, or 48%, of children with an ASD attempt to wander from a safe environment, a rate nearly four times higher than their unaffected siblings.

In 2009, 2010 and 2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91% total U.S. deaths reported in children with an ASD ages 14 and younger subsequent to wandering.

More than one-third of ASD children who wander are never or rarely able to communicate their name, address, or phone number.

Two in three parents of autistic children reported their missing chil-dren had a “close call” with a traffic injury.

Wandering was ranked among the most stressful ASD behaviors by 58% of parents of autistic children.

62 percent of families of children who wander were prevented from enjoying activities outside the home due to fear of wandering.

40 percent of parents had suffered sleep disruption due to fear of their children running.

Sarah is a mother of three. Kevin, her youngest son has autism and has a tendency to wander away. Sarah recently endured an incident where she had lost him in a theme park and found him 3 hours later. The incident frightened the entire family and Sarah soon began to search for a solution in the event that Kevin ever wanders off again.

2.CaregiversmaymisuseBesafeonhealthychildren,tryingtomonitorandintrudeontheirprivacy. This is NOT what the product is intended to be used for. The target use of BeSafe is primarily suited for children with disabilities, such as autism or down syndrome, aged between 4 to 10 years old, with the sole purpose of ensuring safety. An extended use on children who do not face such disabilities, is not endorsed and highly unrecommended. Stalking and accessing private information covertly is considered a criminal offense in many jurisdictions. To ensure against such misuse, BeSafe will only be available through medical prescription and the NYC Administration for Children’s Services.

3.ChildrenwearingBeSafemayfeeldeprivedoffreedomandfeeltheirprivacyisbeingintrudedupon. Since BeSafe is meant to keep track and report a child’s conditions and emotive states in real-time, misusing the device to reprimand a child may result in the child feeling repressed, agitated and even conflicted. Thus, we strongly recommend that caregivers must communicate with their loved ones well before using BeSafe and not use the device compulsively. Overuse of BeSafe has a potential danger of ruining trust and connection between children and parents, the polar opposite of what BeSafe has been designed for.

BeSafe is designed to protect and maintain a secure environment for your loved ones. Kindly note that this product is not intended as a spy-tool. Listed below are potential scenarios that every caregiver must make every effort to avoid. In developing BeSafe, we have tried to ensure the integrity of the product, hoping that it will never put any child’s health and safety ever at risk.

1.KidnappersmayaccessprivateinformationonBeSafeandmisuseittotrackchildrenwithdisabilities. Parents should always keep their phone and the receiver in safe places in order to prevent unwarranted access. There is unfortunately always a possibility that kidnappers may get access to the devices or information stored. BeSafe is equipped with strong protection systems such as passwords and thumbprint-recognition software that will prevent unwarranted access. An auto shutdown feature will also be incorporated, that will allow parents to turn off any signals emitted by the band, delete previous information and alert authorities immediately, if any of the products get lost or stolen.
