Berry Bros. & Rudd Profile Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and

spirit merchant, having traded from the same

shop for over 300 years. The business was

officially established in 1698 by the Widow Bourne at 3 St James's Street in

London, opposite St James's Palace. In 1994 Berry Bros. & Rudd

launched one of the first online wine shops, which is now regarded

as Britain's leading wine website.

Awards

Berry Bros. & Rudd has been awarded Website of the Year six times in the

last seven years at the prestigious International Wine Challenge. The last

award is presented in the top of the first page.

First page Marketing tools

Berry Bros. & Rudd recommend a wine of the day at the first page.

The site focuses on en-primeur offers from Germany, France and USA and the

center of the first page is covered by a window that changes content

according to the selected tab. The award has the dominant position and

the lack of flashing price discounts signifies that Berry Bros. & Rudd

do not focus on cheap wines. Some large banners redirect the customer to

wine lists but the visitor is expected to use the search engine in order to find

the desired wine.

Promoted wines

Promotion tool: Wine of the day

Every day the site recommends a different fine wine. At the time of the

review the recommended wine was the 2004 Caiarossa, IGT Tuscany –

Italy

The wine of the day is presented from the site’s editor:

This ‘super-Tuscan’ blend of biodynamically-grown grapes shows the purest

expression of sumptuous, seductively ripe flavours reminiscent of black

cherries, menthol, liquorice, figs and jammy plum, all of which are then

followed by great earthy and smokey overtones. Delicious to drink now and

over the next 4 to 5 years, I enjoy this cracking wine with a Porcini mushroom

risotto.

making enjoy a higher level of visibility in the first page.

Some countries are slightly promoted in the browsing choices of the first

page.

2004 Domaine Spiropoulos, Red Stag Vin de Pays

Description

From the mountainous vineyards in Nemea region, the skilful vinification of

the indigenous Agiorgitiko variety (12 months in casks, 5 months in bottle)

produces a mature wine with deep red colour and a nose of red berry fruits as

well as vanilla and spicy oak. The palate is rich in fruit and balanced with soft

tannins and a long finish. Drinks now and over the next 4 years.

2007 Assyrtiko Athiri, Domaine Sigalas Santorini

Description

This wine from Domaine Sigalas is the ideal expression of two distinctive,

indigenous varieties of the Santorini island: The powerful, intense, earthy

Assirtiko variety (70% of the blend), which offers the typical expression of the

volcanic soil of Santorini, is in great balance with the more aromatic and soft

Athiri variety. The nose is brimming with ripe citrus fruit, while the palate

shows excellent structure, refreshing acidity and persistent finish. Ideal with

fish and white meat dishes with light sauces.

2006 Domaine Sigalas Santorini Oak-Aged

Description

Wines from the Assyrtiko grape are typically unoaked. Domaine Sigalas has

mastered the "recipe" for oak treatment and this has been one of the winery's

most acclaimed strengths. The wine is fermented in oak barrels, followed by a

few months yeast contact. The colour is golden with a stroke of green. On the

palate, intense citrus flavour, framed by a discreet oak presence that imparts

a note of honeyed character to the wine. An elegant, polished, dry white with

lengthy finish. Ideal companion for grilled and smoked fish, white meat, white

spicy sauces and smoked cheese.

Description

Dyo Elies" (= Two Olive Trees) is an innovative blend of the spicy and fleshy

Syrah (60%), the velvety and aromatic Merlot (30%) and the indigenous

"masculine" Xinomavro (10%) varieties. Xinomavro endows the wine with

nerve, concentration and structure as well as ageing potential. Deeply

coloured, with intense nose of blackberries, plum and vanilla, followed by a

smooth, richly-fruited palate. The 2004 drinks well now and has the substance

and extraction to last and improve for over 8 years. A fine example of modern

Greek winemaking. Decanter World Wine Awards 2007-Silver Medal

Remarks Berry Bros. & Rudd online store is designed focusing on wine lovers and

connoisseurs. It is not the place where the customer can find exceptional

discounts and offers but instead it addresses those who are looking for high

quality wines and services. The Greek wines in the list are few but well

presented and Greece is presented at the countries list.
