Bernard Arcand

Bernard Arcand (April 18, 1945 January 30,2009) was a French-Canadian anthropologist, authorand communicator. He was a retired professor of theanthropology department of Laval University.Born in Deschambault, Qubec, he was lm directorDenys Arcand and comedian Gabriel Arcand's brother.He studied in social sciences at the Montreal University(baccalaureate, 1965; master, 1966). He later studied atthe University of Cambridge where he obtained a certi-cate (1967) and a doctorate (1972), in social anthropol-ogy. He taught at the Copenhagen University in 1971,and then as an assistant professor atMcGill University be-tween 1972 and 1976. He was assistant and then tenuredprofessor, at Universit Laval, from 1976 to 2006.He was a member of the redaction committee of the An-thropologie et Socits magazine between 1982 and 1987and president of the Socit canadienne d'anthropologiefrom 1989 to 1991.In 1991, Arcand published The Jaguar and Anteater, aseries of essays on the topic of pornography for whichhe received the Governor Generals Award. In collabora-tion with Serge Bouchard, he hosted a radio show calledThe Commonplace, broadcast on Radio-Canada in 1990.Some texts and extracts of these shows were publishedbetween 1993 and 2003.Arcand and Bouchard wrote a humor column entitledBien vu!", in the journal Science Quebec.His work with the Cuiva in Columbia was documented inthe lm, Last of the Cuiva (DisappearingWorld Series ofAnthropological lms, 1971).
