poem in the English language
written in Old English, the language of the Saxons
composed as early as c 700, and evolved through many retellings before it was written down
earliest known owner of the manuscript is the 16th century scholar Lawrence Nowell
Hrothgar, king of the Danes, built a mead-hall called as “Heorot hall”
Because of the noise made by the Danes, Grendel attacked them
He ruled the hall for 12 years
A great warrior from Geatland came to help
His name was Beowulf
Beowulf fought with Grendel
Beowulf succeed in defeating Grendel
He get Grendel’s severed arm that served as his trophy
Grendel’s mother came to Herot to avenge Grendel
After defeating Grendel’s mother, he get Grendel’s head
Beowulf sailed back to his land and became the king for 50 years
A thief woken the dragon for stealing a goblet
The dragon angered the Geats and destroyed their land
Beowulf was able to kill the dragon but he was totally wounded.
Because of his condition, he died.
