Beowulf Essay

Created by Essay-Academy.com

To write an essay about Beowulf, narrow the topic. If you narrow this topic, you will kill two birds with one stone:

1. The first bird is that it will be much easier to concentrate on one point (which is the most interesting namely for you) in your Beowulf essay.

As a result, writing a Beowulf essay will be a fascinating occupation for you!

2. The second bird is that your essay will be more unique, if you narrow the topic.

As a result, reading a Beowulf essay will be a fascinating occupation for your teacher, instruction or anybody else!

So the first step of writing an essay about Beowulf is narrowing the topic.

1. Narrowing the Topic Read these ten questions attentively:

1. Can you give some examples of a thirst for revenge in the poem of Beowulf?2. What are the Christian and Pagan motives in the poem?3. Can you find some elements of a fairy tale in this text?4. What are the main character traits of Beowulf? How they help him to win the battles? 5. What are the magic things in the poem? How they help Beowulf to win the battles?

6. Magic things and personality traits of Beowulf: what plays more crucial role in his victories? 7. Can you compare two fights of Beowulf: the first battle of Beowulf (with the monster Grendel) and the second battle of Beowulf (with the monster Grendel’s mother)? 8. How can you describe the third (and the final) battle of Beowulf (with the fire-dragon)? 9. The final battle of Beowulf: a win or a failure?10. Can you compose your own end to the poem of Beowulf? If Beowulf wasn’t killed by the fire-dragon, what would be the other battles? (You may create your own monsters and think up the reasons of the fights!).

2. Writing an Essay About BeowulfSuppose you have chosen the seventh question “Can you compare two fights of Beowulf: the first battle of Beowulf (with the monster Grendel) and the second battle of Beowulf (with the monster Grendel’s mother)?” to write a Beowulf essay.

Remember that though you have to write a literary analysis essay, it may contain some elements of other essay types. For example, if you want to make a comparative analysis of the first and the second battle of Beowulf, your literary analysis essay may contain the elements of a compare and contrast essay type.

In this case you may write something like this: “The second battle of Beowulf (with the monster Grendel’s mother) is more serious and difficult for the main hero than the first one (with the monster Grendel). However, the monster Grendel’s mother is not so huge and strong as her son.How can we explain it? The point is that the monster Grendel’s mother takes revenge for the death of her son. The feelings of a mother are more powerful than the physical strength…”

Suppose your choice is the second question “What are the Christian and Pagan motives in the poem?”. In this case your Beowulf essay may also contain the elements of compare and contrast essay type.

You may write that, on the one hand, the fights of Beowulf with the monsters and fire-dragon may symbolize the struggle between good and evil (this is the Christian motives); on the other hand, we also may interpret these battles and the peacetime as the changing of the seasons (this is the Pagan motives).

Good luck in writing your Beowulf essay!
