C hina is clos- ing in on the US as the most-powerful country influencing the Asia-Pacific, as America’s handling of the Covid-19 pan- demic tarnishes its reputation, a study showed. While America retained its place as the re- gion’s top super- power, its 10-point lead on China two years ago has been halved, according to the Sydney-based Lowy Institute’s Asia Power Index for 2020, which ranks 26 nations and territories. India, the fourth most-powerful nation on the index after Japan, lost economic growth potential in the pandemic, and is also ceding strategic ground to Beijing. Music is a chance to learna universal language

To get youngsters started on stringedinstruments, a ukulele is a great

choice. It’s small enough for tinyhands to get to grips with, and

cheap enough that your buyer’sremorse won’t be too painful ifit ends up gathering dust in acupboard.

Technology has alsomade piano and drums —two of the main instrumentskids are most likely to re-spond to — much more ac-cessible than in the past. Un-like the enormous woodenfurniture models of old, to-day’s digital keyboards arecheap and portable, plentiful

on the secondhand market andjust close enough to the real

thing for you to assess whetherjunior has the chops to become

the next Elton John.Electronic drumkits are also

plentiful today and far more afford-able. A set plus headphones make it

possible for a budding Keith Moon to

practice their paradiddles without sonical-ly savaging the rest of the household — andfor mom or dad to let loose their inner KarenCarpenter or Phil Collins once the kids aretucked in bed.

TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STRUM,HIT OR BLOW SOMETHING MUSICAL.

HOW TO LEARNOne-on-one lessons are by far thebest way to progress, and you’d proba-bly be helping a musician pay the rentand the bills by employing them toteach your child. But YouTube offers awealth of instruction videos for allkinds of instruments and levels iftuition is too costly for your budget.

Afive-year study by the University ofSouthern California published in 2016found learning to play music from the age

of six or seven boosted development in areas ofthe brain that deal with reading skills, speechperception and language development.Exposure to music instruction, the studyargued, produced a physiological change in thebrain, increasing what’s called its neu-roplasticity. Those results are echoedin a study in which researchers test-ed 40 Chilean kidsaged 10-13. Halfwere musicianspracticing for a mini-mum of two hoursper week and regu-larly playing withother musicians. The other 20had no addi-tional musi-cal instructionapart fromwhat their

schools taught as part of their curricula. Thechildren were hooked up to a machine thatmeasures brain activity by detecting changes inblood flow, shown an abstract figure and playeda melody, each lasting four seconds. They wereasked to focus on both, one or neither of thepair of stimuli, then asked to recall. While reac-tion times were similar, the musicians did ‘sig-

nificantly better’ onthe memory test. That can havelife-changingimplications:

brations and getting started with the prepa-rations, from decorating and repainting someitems at home.

Navaratri is a nine-day festival, but in ourfamily we celebrate it for eleven days, fromthe new moon day till Vijayadashami.

The preparations began last weekend withgetting the dolls down from the loft along withthe things needed tobuild the steps for theGolu. Arranging thesteps and decoratingthem with lights andflowers is usually a fam-ily activity, with my fa-ther too chipping in.

On Friday morning,my mother placed theKalasha and two woodendolls, the main attrac-tions of this festival. Mymother made the dressesfor these wooden dolls, and then I decorated themwith colourful stones andsequins.

My dad and I took onthe responsibility of plac-ing the 50-year-old Ga-jalakshmi doll on the top-most step. This idol hasbeen in the family since mygreat grandmother's time.

I repainted this prized possession, last weekend. Our five-headed Gane-sha and elephant pair are also treas-ured.

I arranged the idols of GoddessesLakshmi, Saraswathi and Durga, the Dasa-vataram set with Lord Perumal and Pad-mavati in the centre. I set up a mini gro-cery shop near the Chettiar dolls.

My favorite Black Ganesha _ which wasa gift from my fatherwhen I was three _ alsofinds pride of place in thisarrangement.

In keeping with ourtradition, we add a newidol or doll to the collectionevery year, and this yeartoo we have done so. We arevery particular about get-ting eco-friendly mud dolls.

Over the past few days,I planted nine grains _Navadhania _ in a smallbasket. Over the elevendays, I will continue to wa-ter them and eagerly ob-serve the growth.

The Navaratri festivalis all about the triumphof good over evil. Thisyear, we hope and pray forgood things (normal life)to return, bringing anend to the present evil ofcorona.

Nicholas Pooran is a ‘game-changer’, says Yuvraj Singh

Pooran has been in good form in the ongoing tournament, having scored 295 runs in 10 innings so far. His runs havecome at a very impressive strike rate of over 180

Lionel Messi became the first player to score in 16 consecutive Champions League seasons as he guided 10-man Barcelona to a 5-1 victory over Hungarian sideFerencvaros in their Group G opener at the Camp Nou.

A player of ABD’s calibre wassaved by Kohli-led RCB think-

tank in order to prevent the leg-spinners from dominating him versusKXIP. Having a mediocre record versusleg-spinners, the former South Africancaptain came out at No. 6 in thegame versus Punjab. While it notonly led to a flop show from him

later on, as the two left-handerspromoted ahead took timebefore departing, RCB lost theclash on the last ball.

With 35 required off 12balls, with ABD in the middle, RR

captain Steve Smith oddly preferredJaydev Unadkat over yorker-special-ist Jofra Archer. Not choosing toclose the chase, RR paid the priceas RCB romped past the 2008 win-ners in pursuit of 178,despite being 102-3in 13.1 overs, to winmatch-33 by sevenwickets in Dubai.

Rahul keeping Krishnappa Gowthamto bowl the 20th over vs MI

Sheldon Cottrell was on song against defending cham-pions MI in match 13. Rahul finished his quota in the13th over in the first innings and had to bowlKrishnappa Gowtham versus big-hitters like Hardik

Pandya and Kieron Pollard _ both of whom easilyhammer off-spinners. In addition, using JimmyNeesham in the powerplays was appalling too.

The question remains a topic of debate among every cricket fan as ChennaiSuper Kings captain MS Dhoni continued to back Kedar Jadhav, who has

remained poor despite the heavy investment. In 8 matches, Jadhav has 62runs in five innings at 20.66, at a strike-rate of 93.93 with a best of 26. Not to

forget his inexplicable intent in the run-chase versus Kolkata Knight Riders. Yet,Dhoni chose to play him once again in match 37 between CSK and Rajasthan Royals.

A decision beyond explanation. Hence, Kris Srikkanth lashed out at him.

Alright, lack of spark in youngsters butwhy Kedar Jadhav?
