By respecting old tradition of ‘Guru Shishya Parampara’ in Music & Dance, we have adopted traditional ‘Gurukul
System’ for our courses in Music & Dance. In this system Music & Dance students are actually getting practical
training from their respective Gurus recognized / approved by the University. Theoretical subjects are taught at the
said centre. Students practice at the center which is monitored by faculty members.
Under the Gurukul pattern more importance is given to practical training, performances, encouragement to
innovative group activity and inter disciplinary approach. These are some salient features of this course.
We have also made provision for external students to take admission for the said degree courses, provided student’s
Guru is ready to take responsibility in writing of completing the theory syllabus along with practical.
To guide us to enhance activities of the centre, to prepare the syllabus, to check quality of teaching, to organize
workshops, seminars and various kinds of performances, eminent Performing Artistes, Maestros from the respective
art fields are associated with this School of Performing Arts as advisors.
Looking at the vision of Bharati Vidyapeeth, dedication, quality of infrastructure, all these artistes have given full
support to this institute.

In a two day workshop, Pt. Ajay Pohnkar demonstrated special features of Ustad Amir Khan, Bade Gulam Ali Khan’ s
singing. He also made students understand the different features of Thumari by teaching them few Thumaris.
For students of Kathak and Bhartanatyam, one day workshop on Karan by Kathak Guru Pt. Roshan Datye was
arranged. Karan is a very important concept from Natyashastra. Acoording to Natyashastra Karan means an
aesthetical and balanced movement of hands and legs. Dance students study Natyashastra at Postgraduate level
under the subject ‘Study of Ancient Text’. Although it is a theoretical subject, dance is a performing art and so it is
necessary to understand the link between concepts in ancient texts and its relevance in present day dance style .This
workshop helped students to relate ancient text to technique.
Students of Kathak and Bharatnatyam understood the concept of Karan by recreating it on their own in their
particular style under the gudience of Pt. Roshan Datye. Today’s dance styles do have movements and aesthetical
approach mentioned in Natyashastra’ – This realization changed student’s approach towards ancient texts.
This workshop highlighted the relevance of tradition in present day dance technique.
