Apply - Setting and AtmosphereExplain how film techniques have been used to portray the clash between english and indian value. Organise these ideas into a poster.

The director used a point of view shot to portray clash of cultures because in this shot i t shows Jess’ family looking at her questionably and confused as if they were saying “What are you doing here? You're sister is getting married and you're here playing football in your short shorts”. But it a lso shows the footbal l fie ld in the background helping the audience see the differences between the two cultures; Indian and English.

The director used a birds eye view shot to get a better view of what is taking place in the changing room of Jess’ football club. Jess is trying to get ready for her sisters traditional wedding as soon as possible. Wearing a traditional indian sari, while her football teammates helper while they are dressed in their football uniforms. These two outfits are such contrasts against each other, and it shows the two cultures that Jess is struggling to keep up with.

The director used props and costumes to show the difference in cultures between the indian

culture and the english culture. He did this by having jess play

football in the backyard while all of her families clothing which is

obviously indian clothing hanging on the washing line.

When Joe arrived at the airport before they all left

for America, Jess kissed him lovingly in front of

Jules and both families. This was a sign that Jess

was finished with lies and deceptions.

This helps the audience understand that Jess did not want to leave for America with lies that she would have to keep up with. So she showed her parents that she had nothing to hide anymore, and that they needed to get used to the idea that she will not carry through many of the indian traditions that they are used to.

At the engagement party, the future bridegroom

received food from the father of the bride-to-be.

The father was handing over his daughter to

another man, to be supported by him for the rest of

her life. She then placed food in the mouth of her

husband to-be. That was a symbol of her care for him.

This helps the audience understand that the indian culture is very different to the indian culture. Their traditions are completely different to english traditions and the two cultures do and belive in different things. Jess’ parents want Jess to be like them and do everything the traditional indian way. But Jess has to find a way to manage the two cultures that she is living in.

At the party a mobile phone rang loudly. Four or

five elderly Hindu women took their mobiles out

of their bags. This was to show that they will

listen to modern technology, a product of Western

society, but they won’t listen to modern ideas about

Western style culture.

This helps the audience understand that many indian people act or do the same things. Many of them do not change or alter tradition so everyone is more or less the same. So when the phones rang and 4 or 5 indian women went looking for their phones it showed how similar they can be. However that may have just been a coincidence.

Understand - Themes and IdeasSelect 3 themes and briefly explain each one. Locate a youtube clip for the relevant section of the film where the theme is shown.

Clash of cultures: In the film clash of culture is displayed as Jess just wants to be able to do what she wants but because her parents are extremely conservative she isn’t able to do this. Because Jess’ parents are conservative they do not approve of her choices she has made with soccer, this displays clash of cultures as the traditional Indian side is clashing with the modern English side.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf31y2CMKh8

Stereotyping: Because Jess is in love with soccer and is extremely passionate about it, people think she is a lesbian but she isn’t, this is a form of stereotyping. Jess and Jules are falling victim to people assuming other things because they may look, think or act a certain way.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OeA1t7xTPU

Follow your dreams: Jess’ parents want the best for her and want her to live a stable life, although Jess wants those things she doesn't want them the way her parents do, she wants to follow her dreams and she perseveres by defying her parents orders and not obeying them. Although she doesn't want to hurt her parents she does them, only because it’s benefiting her and her future.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OeA1t7xTPU

Apply - Theme and IdeasSelect one theme and write a paragraph nohow it can be seen in society.

Clash of cultures can be seen today, in modern society, predominantly in middle eastern and african cultures. They fight over religions and which one we should believe in, although it is not just these countries, many countries around the world clash over which race is better, which religion we all should follow.

Understand - CharacterisationGive a brief description on 5 characters

Jess (Jessminda): Jess is the main character/leading character of the film, she strives to play soccer professionally at an American University as Jules told her. She tries to hardest to hide the truth from her parents, she is sensitive, perseverant, emotional and passionate, she displays all of these personality traits throughout the film.Jules: Jules is the supporting character who continues to persuade Jess to play soccer time and time again, she becomes best friends with her till they have a falling out because Jess nearly kisses Joe, who happens to be Jules’ crush as well. Jules is arrogant, full of dreams and is perseverant like Jess, she tries her hardest all throughout the film to go to the American University while dealing with her sexist mother.Pinky: Pinky is the sister of Jess and oldest daughter of Mrs Bhamra, she is materialistic like every other Indian girl and wishes for everything her mother wishes, she is getting married to an Indian boy which her conservative parents approve of.Joe: Joe is the coach of the girls soccer team who also develops feelings for Jess despite Jules becoming angered over it. He tries time and time again to ask Jess’ parents to let her play soccer but they say “no.” He is very strict and emotionless towards the team as he just wants the best for them this could be because of his strict father, he envies the girls because he can’t play due to his knee injury.Mrs Bhamra: Mrs Bhamra is the mother of Jess and Pinky, she is also wife of Mr Bhamra. She is extremely conservative and believes in the old Indian ways of life and culture, this affects Jess wanting to do soccer as her mother will forbid it as she wants Jess to learn everything to prepare her to become a wife and a solicitor. She wants whats ‘best’ for her daughter except what she classifies ‘best’ is not the way Jess does, she is traditional, conservative, sexist because she doesn’t believe in girls playing soccer.

Evaluate - SymbolsSelect 3 symbols and evaluate the lessons the director intended the audience to learn from each.

Jess’ Soccer Shoes: The director of the film Gurinder Chadha intended the soccer shoes to represent Jess’ passion for soccer and that it hints at Jess playing it. These are shown throughout most of the film as Jess continues to play soccer despite her parents telling her they don’t want her to time and time again

David Beckham Poster: The poster located in Jess’ room hints at the audience that she loves soccer as he plays it, it also hints that she enjoys watching the sport or she may play it, which she does. This is shown in the film as it sits on her wall as she watches the soccer and imagines her playing along with him, it is also shown when she talks to him about her struggles.

Sari: The Sari represents the Indian culture which is part of Jess’ life. It displays to the audience and helps them understand that she is of Indian descent and that she is a traditional Indian because she sticks to her traditional clothing rather than someone who chooses to ignore her Indian roots. The sari also represents a large part and theme of the film.

By RileyEvaluate - Visual and Verbal Techniques Select 5 film techniques and evaluate the lessons that the director intended the audience to learn from each.

Mise en Scene:

The sari’s and clothing where strategically bright not only because of the Indian culture but to introduce the culture to others who do not understand it. It covers up the characters bodies so that the audience understands that Jess isn’t allowed to wear clothes such as a soccer uniform which shows a lot more of her body than traditional clothing.

Editing:

The editing within Bend It Like Beckham helps teach the audience to persevere and you are able to live your dreams and you can accomplish what you are set out to do through editing. The cross shots helps show that Jess who is in her soccer game is finally joyful after being sad because she was banned from doing soccer which stopped her dreams, but her father let her go. The cross cutting also teaches the audience that if you really try hard that your dreams can come true as Pinky is finally happy while living her dream wedding with her dream groom.

Camera Work:

The camera work helps the audience understand Jess’ determination through extreme close ups especially in soccer games. This is because we can see in her eyes and face that she really wants to get the ball in the goal. The audience learns that you must be determined enough to be able to go far in life and celebrate your triumphs as wide shots show the group celebrating after the amount of effort and determination put into training in order to win.

Sound:

The sound and dialogue helps the audience learn how the characters feel and their true feelings by the way there voices sound. It also teaches the audience that you need to be respectful in order to live your dreams and achieve your goals. The way the dialogue displays this is that Jess yelling and arguing with her parents do not help her case of wanting to play soccer, she should show evidence and actually persuade them into accepting her decision rather than argue about it and make it worse.

Lighting:

he lighting in the film teaches the audience that you need to hope and be faithful as the light colours throughout the film symbolise Jess’ mood and attitude. When it is light Jess is feeling joyous and glad while when it is dark Jess is feeling down about soccer and sad about her family not accepting her for who she is as she chooses to play soccer rather than live her life wanting to make her parents happy by a professional soccer player.
