The Cubist Decade

• 1905-1908, makes sense to name it after the prevailing style of art because of the parallels with other cultural movements of the time– Sudden fresh vigor• The generation born in the late 1870s-early 1880s

embraced the world rather than pushed it away like their Romantic parents• Reacted against the Impressionism and Post-

Impressionism that refused to portray reality• [see Claude Monet’s and Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings

in background]

• Impressionism/Post-Impressionism– Color used for contrast or brilliancy, not

representation– Art consisted in nothing but color and line on a flat

surface• Never mind what the picture was representing; were

portions of color arranged well? That question kept eyes busy and ideas at bay

• Change came with Picasso’s Cubism– Geometric shapes• Show impact of industrialization

– Showing scenes from as many points of view as possible at once• Show growing relativism/subjectivity

• Architects had preceded artists with the flat surface– Needing to design railway stations and skyscrapers

• The elimination of the recognizable– Like the movement towards mass politics in Europe

• Probably because Russia lacked the money to industrialize and catch up with other European countries becoming more militarily powerful

– All of these agreements were broken by Germany in 1914• And all countries involved went from that to seeing pacifism as

treason in 1914

• Literature became more novel, but not as shocking as Cubism in art– Leo Tolstoy – holds up the Russian peasant as the paragon of

virtue– Fyodor Dostoevsky – inner life is stronger than society

situation, focused on the drama and tension of emotion and the working out of conflicting desires

• Music shocked audiences– Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring ballet caused riots at its 1913
