How to use a Triple Beam Balance

First, make sure all the sliding weights are on the left hand side, closest to the weighing platform.Second, if the pointer does NOT read ZERO when the sliding weights are all the way to the left, adjust the knob until the pointer reads ZERO. This is called CALIBRATING the balance.

Fourth, move the largest sliding weight right along the beam. If the pointer hits the lowest point, move it back to the left one by one until it starts to rise. Then start with the next smallest sliding weight. Continue this way until pointer reads ZERO.

Third, add the object you want to weigh to the platform.

Fifth, once the pointer reads ZERO, add readings from all for sliding weights together to get the total mass.

For example, if the largest slider read 200, the middle reads 50, and the smallest reads 1, you add

200 + 50 + 1 = 251 gram of total mass

Using a Graduated CylinderWhen reading a measurement from a graduated cylinder, look for the MENISCUS – the curved shape the water makes in the tube. You will always take the measurement reading from the BOTTOM of the meniscus. This graduated cylinder contains exactly 9 mL.

NOTE: You will have to get eye-level with the meniscus to be able to read the measurement accurately.

EYE LEVEL!Do not: hold the cylinder in the air to read it. This will not give you an accurate reading.

DO: set the cylinder down on the desk, wait for the liquid to settle, then get on eye level for the best reading.

Measuring Length and Width ALWAYS USE METRIC

SYSTEM ONLY! ONLY METERS (m) AND CENTIMETERS (cm). NEVER INCHES.

Line up the tip of your object with the first measurements of the rulers.

Next, measure the object tip to tip, length and width.

Measuring Lab!Each group will have a turn at Tables A, B, C and D and will complete the activity on the notecard. You are required to write down your answers and draw your pictures when asked. Please bring a sheet of paper and a pencil/pen. Please be patient and cooperative with your group members.
