things to remember aboutJenni & this by-election... Jenni has raised her family in Bellingham over the

past ten years and knows how hard it can be forfamilies in this area. None of the other candidateslive in Bellingham - the Conservative candidatedoesnt even lives in this borough!

Jenni has set up community projects to deal withimportant local concerns: tackling crime & safety, helping young people into employment andsupporting local women.

Only Jenni Steele can realistically beat Labour hereon 24th March. Her team was a close second lastyear, and the other parties are too far behind.

The Liberal Democrats haveannounced that the PupilPremium scheme will be put inplace from this September.

The extra funding, which was a keyLib Dem commitment at theGeneral Election, targets extra cashat schools which take children fromthe disadvantaged backgrounds. The money will go directly toschools, allowing headteachers todetermine how best to use it toimprove the schools performance.

The first years funding is an extra430 per student eligible for FreeSchool Meals, will mean over 3.7mmore for education in Lewishamborough, despite the budget savings, and thousands of pounds extra forBellinghams schools. Thegovernments intention is for thePremium to rise annually over each of the next few years.

Britains lowest paid workers willsee their Income Tax bills cut fromApril as part of the Lib Dem plans aspart of the government for faireraxes, allowing them to keep more

of their money. The tax cut, confirmed this week byhe Chancellor, will be through a

1,000 rise in the PersonalAllowance - the amount you canearn before you start payingncome Tax - starting from 5th April,

and could be worth up to 200 inworkers pay-packets this year.

The tax change is a first step inaking millions or workers out of ncome Tax altogether, as promised

by the Lib Dems in last years

elections, by raising the PersonalAllowance by 1,000 annuallyfor the next four years.

Another part of thepackage to make taxes

fairer - increasing thetaxes paid by wealthieston capital gains - wasannounced by the LibDems in government lastyear. Future plans includea crackdown on taxavoidance by companies

    and thewealthiest.

Labour puts jobs for the Mayorsmates before local servicesLewishams Labour Mayorconfirmed this month hispreference for keeping non-jobsor other Labour politicians over

saving vital local services fromdeeper cuts. On 1st March, all theLabour councillors and the Mayorvoted to cut 33 million fromLewisham Council services, yet

ejected a Lib Dem proposal toeduce the size of the Mayorscabinet of advisers to save moneywhich could be put into frontlineservices.

The Mayors cabinet, made up onlyof Labour politicians, each receivehousands of pounds in extra

    allowances yet have no formal

powers. Scaling back this group tothe minimum size allowed wouldrelease extra cash at the same timeas the council is cutting millions

from care services for older adults, projects protecting children &families and even the closure of fivelibraries..

Lewishams recycling service willalso suffer - and the boroughalready has one of the worstrecords in the whole country. Alllocal councils and government

departments are having to savemoney to pay back the huge deficitrun-up when Labour was ingovernment. But Labour-runLewisham council is free to decidehow to save money, and havechosen to cut front-line servicesbefore cutting non-jobs for theMayors mates.

A fair deal for pensioners at last

After many years of poortreatment at the hands of Labour and Gordon Brown, theUKs pensioners have at last gota fair deal from the Lib Dems ingovernment.

From April, the state pensionwill rise by 4.50 a week - anincrease of nearly 5% on thebasic entitlement - and furtherrises are in the pipeline. This iscompared to the shoddytreatment of pensioners byGordon Brown, whomemorably gave pensioners amiserly 75p a week increaseone year.

More good news from the LibDems in government is that wehave met a key demand of pensions campaigners for thepast 30 years: future statepension increases will be linkedto whichever of nationalearnings or inflation has risenmost in the year.

Furthermore, the governmenthas scrapped plans to do awaywith Labours cuts to coldweather payments - eligiblepensioners will still receive 25a week during the winter tohelp with the rising costs of heating their homes.
