St. Bernadette, Pray For Us

Fr Harry Buseness

St. Bernadette Parish sponsors a number of organizations, all of which contribute to the overall welfare of the parish. They help us to fulfill our parish mission as expressed in our parish mission statement, “We the parish family of St. Bernadette, are called forth by our baptism to be empowered by the Holy Spirit and to follow the mission of Jesus to worship, to teach to love and to serve.” These organizations include the St. Bernadette Men’s Club and the St. Bernadette Altar Society. Though not all adult men and women are active in these organizations, all men and women are considered to belong to one of them respectively. They assist the pastor with many projects and activities and promote the overall mission of the parish. The Altar Society maintains the needs of the sanctuary and assists the pastor in matters pertaining to the welfare of the parish. The society hosts receptions for church celebrations and assists with funeral luncheons. They encourage continued Catholic education and provide 8th grade students the opportunity to earn Altar Society sponsored scholarships to attend a Catholic high school. The Men’s Club is dedicated to the support of Christian family living in the parish. It is committed to providing opportunities to the youth of the parish to grow as Catholics. Education and athletics are used as vehicles to help students become morally strong contributing members of society. The Men’s Club encourages continuing Catholic education by providing 8th grade students the opportunity to earn Men’s Club sponsored scholarships to attend a Catholic high school. In addition to the general purposes outlined above, both of these organizations play an important role in the operation of the St. Bernadette Parish Festival each July. Along with the St. Bernadette Home and School organization, they provide meals for our First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation retreats. I know that I can call on either group any time to host a special parish event or take on a special parish project. They have also been working hard over the past several years to raise funds for a number of special projects in the parish. Currently, The Men’s Club has raised $7000.00 through their last two Big Ball tournaments. This amount will be added to other funds raised through last year’s Keeping the Faith fundraiser for the new electronic sign to be constructed along 42nd Street. The Altar Society is paying the entire cost of the new cabinets being installed on the south end of the Social Hall. These cabinets will be used by Altar Society, the funeral lunch committee, Home and School, and the adult faith formation and ChristLife committee. The efforts of these two groups enable the parish to provide certain services and improvements we would not be able to provide with our regular parish operating income. I am very grateful to the Men’s Club and Altar Society who contribute so much to the parish. The Altar Society has a new meeting day this year. It meets the 1st Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the parish social hall. The Men’s Club meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:00 p.m., also in the parish social hall. I invite all women and men to come and join us on these days.

~Fr. Harry Buse

Vocations

COMMUNITY ROLE IN THE CULTURE OF VOCATIONS - Pope Francis, in his November 2013 apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, underlined the continued need to build a culture of vocations. “The fraternal life and fervor of the community can awaken in the young a desire to consecrate themselves completely to God and to preaching of the Gospel. This is particularly true if such a living community prays insistently for vocations and courageously proposes to its young people the path of special consecration.” Be not afraid to ask boys and girls if they have thought and prayed about their vocation. This week pray for Seminarian Ryan Keisling read his vocations story and biography at https://archomaha.org/ministries/vocations/seminary/Ryan-Keisling/ The encounter with Jesus never leaves one unaffected, but our ears must be opened to receive His word. (Mark 7:31-37) If you are feeling called as a priest, religious, or deacon, call Father Harry Buse at 402‐731‐4694 or email: [email protected].
