What is the equator? The equator is an imaginary line that runs west to east

across the middle of the Earth. It splits the world into the Northern and Southern

hemispheres. The prefix hemi means “half”. A hemisphere is half of the

Earth.

What is the prime meridian? The prime meridian is an imaginary line that runs from the

North Pole to the South Pole. It splits the world into the Western and Eastern

hemispheres.

Latitude and LongitudeBoth the equator and prime

meridian are part of a system of imaginary lines that form a grid pattern around the globe. This system is called latitude and longitude.

We can use latitude & longitude to find the exact location of any place in the world.

We measure the distance between latitude and longitude lines in degrees. This type of degree is different from the kind we use to measure temperature!

LatitudeLatitude lines run west

to east (across) on the globe.

The equator is the main line of latitude. It is located at 0°.

Latitude lines are also called parallels because they are all parallel to the equator.

Using LatitudeLatitude lines measure distances NORTH or SOUTH of the

equator.

This line is 40⁰ north of the Equator, so we call it 40⁰ N.

This line is 60⁰ south of the Equator, so we call it 60⁰ S.

LongitudeLongitude lines run

north to south (up and down) on the globe, from pole to pole.

The prime meridian is the main line of longitude. It is located at 0°.

Longitude lines are also called meridians.

Using LongitudeLongitude lines measure

distances EAST or WEST of the prime meridian.

This line is 80⁰ west of the Prime Meridian, so we call it 80⁰ W

This line is 60⁰ east of the Prime Meridian, so we call it 60⁰ E

CoordinatesWhen you put a latitude degree and a

longitude degree together, you have made coordinates.Example: Baton Rouge is located 30⁰ north of

the Equator and 91⁰ west of the Prime Meridian.30⁰ N is the latitude and 91⁰ W is the longitudeThe coordinates would be written as 30°N, 91°WYou would find Baton Rouge on a map at the place

where the 30°N latitude line crosses the 91°W longitude line.

Using Latitude and LongitudeBy using coordinates, you can find any place on the

globe! Sometimes, a particular line you want to find will not

be on the map…remember to ESTIMATE.

For example, Baton Rouge is located at 30 N, ⁰91 W. Since the ⁰30 N line is not ⁰marked, you must look halfway between 20 and ⁰40 .⁰

Remember, latitude and longitude is all about location. When you are given coordinates, you are being given directions to find a specific location on the globe.

Coordinates – 20° S, 50° E Longitude line

Latitude line

First, you find where the latitude line is – either north or south of the equator. Then, you find where the longitude line is – either east or west of the prime meridian. The place you are trying to find will be where those two lines cross!

Let’s Practice! First, highlight and label the equator and prime meridian. Latitude measures distance north or south of the equator

and is measured first. Longitude measures distance east or west of the prime

meridian and is measured second. Using pencil, put a dot at the following coordinates. 30° S, 140° E30° N, 90° W40° N, 90° E70° S, 70° W0°, 20° E (remember, 0° latitude = the equator!)

Where in the world?!Find and put a dot in the following places on the map.

20° S, 50° E

60° N, 160° W

40° S, 70° W

40° N, 0° (remember, 0° longitude = the Prime Meridian!)
