What is the ICE? The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Awards recognise excellence andimaginative concepts in civil engineering practice within London. The award identifiesconstruction projects and promotes excellence in the engineering profession. This premiershowcase for engineering excellence in the capital holds an annual award ceremony torecognise the engineering achievements within London. The flagship event hosts up to 200+of the industry’s finest civil engineering contractors. The winners were shortlisted from 17projects and seven were awarded trophies.

What was the overall project? The East London section of the London Overground is a great success story with passengernumbers rocketing since the line was revamped in 2011. These increased passenger numbersmeant capacity enhancements were needed with the Mayor setting a deadline of December2014. The extra capacity has been created by increasing the length of the trains from four tofive cars. This involved the delivery of a complex programme of platform lengthening, train stabling, signalling upgrades and maintenance facilities for the longer trains - ajob that had to be done in just 20 months. A new depot has been built oncontaminated wasteland at Silwood Sidings and a maintenance shed at New CrossGate has been extended to fit the new trains in. All this had to be done withoutaffecting daytime services or train maintenance - a job the project teamfinished on time.

What was the award for? The awarded work facilitated the LondonOverground capacity improvement programme project to deliver 5-cartrains on the East London Line in record time. Clancy Docwra acted aspre-enabling and phase 1 contractor at Silwood Sidings and managed thedesign and delivery of the scheme, working closely with the infrastructuremaintainance contractors and London Overground to ensure the successfuldelivery for this award-winning project.

An increase in capacity has been achieved with very littleintervention and cost, which will dramatically improve theservice for commuters. This complex job was delivered withoutany impact on the service...ICE Judges

As a contractor of SP Energy Networks we provided a JCB excavator to coverthe four day event to help reinforce the importance of public safety.

Clancy Docwra’s Peter Calderwood helped demonstrate the importance ofsafety when working in agricultural areas with low power lines through the useof an electric character called ‘Sparky’.

We could not be more pleased to have been involved with this truly uniqueevent about agricultural safety with SP Energy Networks, and we hope to workon more safety themed events in the future.

Peter was a fantastic ambassador for Clancy Docwraand whole heartedly involved himself, helpingfacilitate the event and engaging with the public.

VISION 2020

Here’s what some of our colleagues had to say

The campaign is backed with a £10,000awards fund. The first two winners on theday of the launch were Tim Scott and DaleBristow from the South West region whocame up with ideas for improvingproductivity by addressing simple day-to-day behaviours.

Their idea was interpreted and distributedat the launch events in the form of a pocketsize card, titled 2020 Vision. The ideastackled included being a leader andproactively promoting safety, being a rolemodel and influencing positive change andbetter understanding of our clients' needsand delivering according to them.

The directors are currently delivering thesame presentation to our clients, contractorsand suppliers to ensure that we workcollaboratively to achieve shared goals.

“It will never get done…”Unblocking ourselves for changeIf I had a job performance review done today by my dad I woulddefinitely fail. Ages ago, at the peak of my teenager social awkwardness,I was always afraid of talking to girls. I loved and hated going to parties. There was so much hope at the beginning and disaster at the end.

My dad tried again and again to teach me that the only way of accomplishingsomething is by trying and trying several times. I thought he was talkingabout my Mr. Bean flirting style, but the lesson was much deeper. Our livesare ruled by a basic statistical truth; the size of your accomplishments willbe equal or smaller to the size of your trials. And if you’re anything like methe size of your trials has to be much, much, much bigger!

Yes, teenagers are the most stubborn of creatures, but in our work liveswe don’t stray far from this attitude. We’re always afraid of trying. Ourexcuses range in the millions; we tried and it didn’t work, my boss, budget, my team, training, time, culture, communication, IT, the moonphases, my uncle’s second cousin…

Improvement and innovation sit patiently on the other side of this blackdoor. How on earth do we get it out?

Taking a page from the retail and service industry, we did a ‘CustomerJourney’ map of people submitting an idea to the Ideas Pipeline. Wetried to identify people’s moods at each stage; the touch points withthe company and the blockers. Surprise, surprise. The biggest blockerof innovation is not budget. It is not time. It is not your boss. It is us.Yes, including you.

We are working on many ways to help unblock ourselves. More thankyou calls, more updates, more communication, more ways to empowerpeople, more transparency, more participation…

We also identified three big areas for development in our process; howdo we share and codify existing innovations, how do we properly scoreideas and how are we going to actually implement them once chosen?

A lot of work remains to be done.

No construction company has ever resolved these issues. So how canwe succeed?

Well, this is simple, in order to succeed you have to try, whether its once or twice or a numerous amount ofattempts, but I can guarantee you that I willmake a positive change.

It will get done.

What about you? Can you get past the ‘itwill never get done’ blocker?

Our journey towards 2020 has begun and weneed to ensure that our Head Office inHarefield goes on the journey with us;supporting both the business we are todayand the business we want to become. Over the coming months we will be makingsome exciting changes to the building, improving the working environment anddelivering a Head Office we are all proudof. We will update you as things progressbut here are some of the key ideas...

Staff restaurantCentral to the overall project will be the complete renovation ofour existing canteen facilities. Following the removal of a numberof walls and the current Directors Meeting Room we willestablish a single staff restaurant within a large open-plan space, which we believe will form the centrepiece of Clare House. Thiswill provide a space where people can not only enjoy their meals, but can also interact with each other holding informal meetingsand working in groups. To ensure that the restaurant is able toprovide the quality of service you deserve, a brand new kitchenwill also be installed as part of the refurbishment. Some of theearly ideas for the design can be seen here...

ReceptionAlongside the redevelopment of the staff restaurant will be theestablishment of a new reception area replacing the currentconservatory. This will enable us to provide a new modernwelcome for everyone working in or visiting Clare House andwill enhance the flow of people through the building. While

establishing the new entrance to the building we will betaking the opportunity to review parking arrangements andthe pedestrian walkways to the building, ensuring thateveryone remains safe as they move between their cars andthe office.

Lakeside pathWe are extremely lucky to have a beautiful lake outside our frontdoor and one of the first steps on our journey will be to makemore of this wonderful feature. In order to do this we will beestablishing a more accessible lakeside path and we hope that youand your families will take advantage of our location while away

from your desks. In order to help with this we will beestablishing signage around the path highlighting distanceswalked and providing information on some of the wildlife youmight see. We will also be investing in new outdoor furniturefor those of you who might prefer to sit still and enjoy the views.

Gary Cooper

Our largest and most complex project todate was London Overground CapacityImprovement Programme at SilwoodSidings, where we remediated and recycled80,000 tonnes of waste material andconstructed the track formation, including3000m of new drainage for the new EastLondon Sidings. Why choose an apprenticeship scheme? There are significant benefits for a young person to joinan apprenticeship programme after finishing GCSEor A level education. They learn on the job, gainhands-on practical experience in the sector theyhave chosen to specialise in, as well as receivetraining towards industry recognised qualifications. They are supported during this programme throughevery aspect, both on the job at work and off-site with theirtraining provider.

Who are these schemes for?We like to employ hardworking and ambitious people who wehope will add to the business by bringing enthusiasm, awillingness to learn and energy, to become the next generationof talent in our industry. There are usually further developmentopportunities within the organisation for apprentices whodemonstrate the right attitude and capabilities.

Investors in People…

I joined The Clancy Groupgraduate scheme as a Business

Assurance graduate afterstudying Business and Management

at Aston University. Since starting inJune 2015, I have been involved in several different aspectsof the business including Road Risk and QualityManagement and am currently working within the BusinessAssurance department.

When I was searching for a graduate job the main feature Iwas looking for was a fast-paced industry with great prospectsfor learning, career progression and growth. When it came toapplying to specific companies, Clancy Docwra ticked allthese boxes.

With several of my family members based within theconstruction industry, one of the main reasons I applied to joinClancy Docwra on the graduate programme was the prospectof obtaining an appreciation of the different roles anddepartments and how they work together.

The best thing for me about the Business Assurance functionis working with almost all aspects of the business, providingthe possibility of travel to all the sites and offices. This role

has already allowed me to travel and meet people across thebusiness in different locations throughout the UK meetingcolleagues and clients in Sunderland and on the AnglianWater contract.

In the short time with The Clancy Group so far, I havealready had the opportunity to begin my auditor trainingand develop my understanding of ISO 9001; completing myInternal Quality Management Systems Auditor course withthe aim to complete my Lead Auditor course in the nearfuture. As part of The Clancy Group graduate programme,I am also looking forward to undertaking the ILM andIOSH Managing Safely courses. With this in mind, I havebeen exposed to a variety of challenging work tasks, including the daily maintenance of RiskMaster andconducting the analysis and reporting of Road Risk data. Ihave also become involved with measuring the CarbonEmissions for the entire company under ISO 14064 as wellas being involved in numerous Business ManagementSystem audits.

To anyone considering applying for the Graduate Schemewith The Clancy Group, I recommend you go for it. There arecurrently many opportunities and exciting challenges andprojects to work on with the relevant training and support.

We run a number of graduate schemes here at The Clancy Group for university graduates in order tobring talented and hardworking people into the business. Every graduate follows a development andtraining programme over the course of their two year development plan. We aim to use a combination offormal training with some generic management courses, internal and external placements and shadowing. As part of our Investors in People scheme it’s important for us to follow regular training and developmentplans for our employees at The Clancy Group.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our 2020 Vision we have several graduates within our team. Weasked one of our most recent graduates, Kyle Ingram, to share his story.

Paper counterpartsFrom 8th June 2015 the paper counterpart licence is not valid andwill no longer be issued by DVLA. The counterpart has no legalstatus from this date and drivers with a counterpart should destroyit. Paper licences issued before 1998 will not be affected andremain valid.

Penalty pointsSince 8th June 2015 new penalty points (endorsements) are onlyrecorded electronically and will not be printed or written on eitherphotocard licences or paper driving licences. From this date if youcommit an offence you’ll still have to pay any applicable fine andsubmit your licence to the court, but the way the court now dealswith the paperwork has changed.

For photocard licences the court will retain the paper counterpartand only return the photocard to you.

For paper licences the court will return it to you but they won’thave written or printed the offence details on it.

This means that since 8th June 2015 neither the photocard drivinglicence or the paper licence provides an accurate account of anydriving endorsements you may have. Instead this information isheld on DVLA’s driver record and can be viewed online, by phoneor post.

What does this mean for us? We will no longer be able to carry out a visual check of a licenceupon employment (as was previously the process) whenauthorising an employee to drive for the first time. As part of theinduction process, the employee (if required to drive on business)will need to log on to the new DVLA website (GOV.UK) whichallows you to share your driving licence details or download asummary of your driving licence record. The code lasts for up to21 days and allows employers and hire companies to make any

necessary checks. You can have up to 15 active check codes atany given time. The driver will then pass this code on to theInduction Facilitator which allows them to confirm licencedetails. A record of this must be kept along with the internalDriver Authorisation Form that can be found on Business Core.

If you cannot generate a code online then you can call 0300 0830013 and DVLA will provide you with a code.

Please note This new process will not affect the way that a driver’s licence iscontinually checked once a driver is registered with RiskMaster.

The regulations relating to driving licenceshave changed. Here are some updates andadvice to motorists on the abolition of thecounterpart to the photocard driving licence

InnovationClancy Mobile gives us a great platform to build upon. Themobile team will be working with the contract teams to analysenew business requirements and build extra workflow andfunctionality into Clancy Mobile. We’re hoping a number of 2020Vision ideas will be included into future releases.

The new smart phones together with the Clancy Mobile app havebeen very well received by our colleagues and by our clients. Thetechnology being deployed is a substantial move forward fromMobile-i in terms of both the hardware and the user experience.

User ExperienceThe simplicity of Clancy Mobile has been crucial to its rapiduptake. The app is designed to look and feel like any other mobileapp such as Facebook or Instagram. Clancy Mobile is built towork offline in areas of limited coverage. Data is sent in thebackground over 3G, so gone are the days of photo delays andGPS timeouts.

In June this year we acquired two of these machines and weare currently the only company in England to have them.

Roadmender Patching uses a proprietary volumetric processthat allows us to produce Polymer Modified Hot-Mix Asphaltin just the quantity you need, directly at the job site.

While the finished mix is no different to premium grade hot-mix asphalt you can collect from an asphalt plant, the systemdelivers significant operating efficiencies, performancebenefits and cost savings over traditional patching methods.

Our Streetworks Manager, Dickie Aston-Wright has been outin the marketplace demonstrating the machines and has hadsome excellent feedback to date.

Dickie commented. “The technology is a true game-changer. It ticks all the boxes in the NJUG (National JointUtilities Group) vision which is the UK’s only tradeassociation.”

The Roadmender is a purpose built mobile asphalt plant, designed to heat and mix up to 200kgs of hot-mix asphalt everyten to fifteen minutes.

Both of Clancy Docwra’s Roadmender machines are now inthe process of being rolled-out on the Anglian Water andSouthern Water contracts.

! Verifies operator training every turn ofthe key.

What is an i-am card? The i-am card is a card device whichlinks a user to the piece of equipmentbeing used. Its main purpose is to ensure thatonly trained and competent operatives use thepotentially dangerous equipment which at timesis quite complex and difficult to monitor.

Page 29: Beginning our journey towards our 2020 Vision · The East London section of the London Overground is a great success story with passenger numbers rocketing since the line was revamped

How does the occupancy sensor work? The occupancy sensor is a built intool which ensures that operativesremain within the designated cabarea of the machinery they are using.

The sensor is permanently located in the cab and ismapped to the interior of the particular cab it isinstalled in. Through the mapping and calibrationprocess, the sensor’s controlling softwareunderstands where the occupant (the driver) shouldbe. This is far more powerful than a seat sensor (suchas used in vehicles to activate the seat belt warningor seat heater), as it can detect any deviation fromsafe practice. Should it detect unsafe practice, withthe operator moving outside of the permitted zone, the vehicle is temporarily disabled.

Did you know...Over 30% of all service strikes are actually located, marked up and then hit?We don’t always immediately realise when services are buried close to the surface. Our strikealert only activates when you are within 300mm of a service and can be used to measure a depth.

Can’t see the wood for trees? Multiple services cannot be identified when the gain is set too high. When a service is located andbefore tracing commences, we recommend that you try turning the gain down to 50%. At thislevel sudden changes of direction and services running parallel are easily identified.

A CAT used on its own will find less than 20% of what could be buried..In many cases buried services cannot be detected by using power and radio models as these signalsare often weak or simply not there. By using the Genny you are applying a strong signal which iseasily detected by the CAT. Remember you are at risk every time you scan without a Genny.

Hi Paul & Amelia

I wanted to drop you a line to express our thanks about your team of engineers who did the

recent work outside our house. The road works involved several parked commercial vehicles

at times and it necessiated the use of safety cages which occasionally block our drive way -

but not once did your workmen complain when we needed to get in or out with our car- in

fact they could not have been more courteous and helpful if they had tried; and at no time

was the site ever left in a mess- if only my kids had been that tidy with their toys!!

During the time they were there I got into conversation with paul the site supervisor, and it

was really interesting to be told what was being done and for why. I told him that I wanted

to write to someone expressing our thoughts so he gave me your business cards with your

email addresses on.

Please pass on our appreciation of how considerate they were to us and our immediate

neighbours- you must be proud having a good team of guys working for you.

Kindest Regards

Carol & Bob Wickington

ExceptionalCustomerService….

A word of

appreciation

We received a total of 169 complimentsfrom customers for the period April - July 2015

To whom this may concern, I am writing to inform you of a brave and selfless act

demonstrated by two of your employees yesterday; 8th July.

Their exemplary bravery and courage melted my heart when

they put their own lives at risk to help my son, Liam Henderson,

in a road traffic accident on the M2 around 7am. These two men

stopped, when everyone else drove by in rush hour traffic, to

give first aid to my son who doctors believe had some kind of

episode behind the wheel. They stopped passing traffic and prevented Liam from running

into cars, lorries etc., and phoned paramedics and stayed by his

side until the local authorities arrived. As a family and on behalf of Liam, we cannot express our

gratitude enough to brave heroes Daniel Woods and Chris Watts,

who prevented what could have been a huge disaster. The

outcome could have been a lot different if it weren't for them.

They truly deserve recognition and a medal for their acts of

kindness to another human being. My son has no recollection of the incident yesterday and is

sincerely indebted to them. Paramedics and police also

commended their bravery to me. Daniel and Chris have done your company proud from an

extremely grateful and lucky family. Debbie Bullen (Mother), Liam Henderson and Daisy Barr (Partner)

Colin Waugh our business strategy anddevelopment director retired this July havingjoined The Clancy Group in 1992, some 23 yearsago. At a drinks reception to mark the occasionthere were a few tears as Colin bade hisfarewell. Always a popular figure in theoffice he was well respected and his wisecouncil will be missed by many.

Colin joined in 1992 after spells abroad inDubai and Nigeria with Balfour Beatty andmore latterly with Amey Group, before hesaw the light and joined us. He successfullyled the transition team that saw us grow from asouthern based water contractor to the nationalcontractor we are today.

Not always the loudest voice, but one that wasalways listened to when complex problems weredebated, his loyalty and intelligence wasappreciated by all that knew him, in particularhis ability to soak-up knowledge and explain itto the rest of the team.

A keen sportsman that since he joined us hasretired from cricket, but taken-up golf and morerecently cycling, so we should look out for himin next year’s Tour de France, at least in the stagenear his home close to Chalfont St Giles . It’s nota total loss because last year his son Edwardjoined us so we still have a Waugh in theorganisation. Liz his wife received flowers on theevening and his daughter Katie was also here.

Let’s hope that retirement is good to Colin andmaybe a turn around in Newcastle United’sfortunes would help as he is a long timesupporter and sufferer for his hometown team.Howay the lads.

Kevin Clancy

“Colin’s time within the Clancy family team was always as a peopleperson, reflective and thoughtful, with a friendly demeanour, approachable and fair, able to look at things from a different perspectivein all that he sought involvement with.

His creative mind-set will be sorely missed from within theleadership team”

Tony Newton (Director)

“Working with Colin invariably had thetwin benefits of being successful andbeing fun. He always had the widerinterest of Clancy Docwra and itspeople at heart, truly living the values ofthe business.”

Mike Sillence (Associate Director)

We are very sad to report the death of Gerry Armory, who passedaway on 30th July 2015.

Gerry spent almost his entire career with the Clancy Group joiningin November 1968 and retiring in October 2014. In those 36 yearshe rose from being a site agent to a director of the company andalways a team player who will be fondly remembered by many.

He had been unwell in the last six months, but up until very recentlystill enjoyed a few pints with his former colleagues on Monday nights.

His funeral was on 7th August which was very well attended by manyfriends and colleagues. There was an impressive representation fromRuislip Rugby Club; a club that he gave an inordinate amount of histime to and drinks were held at the Northwood Golf Club.

He will be remembered by all his many friends and was described by
