THE SETTING

THE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. From his early years in Bonn, Germany to his legendary achievements in Vienna, Austria, the musical center of 19th century Europe, Beethoven left an indelible mark that forever changed the landscape of classical music. Beethoven is considered the most frequently played classical composer and Vienna is the perfect place to celebrate the golden anniversary. Explore the sights and sounds of musical Europe and Beethoven’s past as you follow in the footsteps of the most influential composer of the late Classical/early Romantic era. The combined Festival Chorus will rehearse and perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the inspired direction of Dr. Jeffery Redding.

VIENNA, AUSTRIAVienna is well known as the city of music, where artists flourished and created some of the world’s most famous symphonies and operas. Countless musicians called Vienna their home, including Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Strauss. Ludwig van Beethoven spent his adult life in Vienna, and today the city celebrates his life with dozens of statues, monuments, and museums. Beethoven had 67 different addresses in the Austrian capital. Walking in the city is literally following the historical sites where Beethoven lived and worked. Exciting visits on tour include the Pasqualatihaus Museum, Heligenstadt Museum, Beethoven Platz where stands the monumental statue of the composer, Heiligenstadt Park, Laimgrubengasse 22 which is one of the buildings where Beethoven lived as he worked on his Ninth Symphony and Beethoven’s Grave at Central Cemetery.
