Villa DF at K, Belgium SINGULAR HOUSING Stéphane Beel Architecten bvba, 1996-2000 The high walls of substantial poplars along both sides of the plot give it a pronounced spatial character, reminiscent of an open-air room, while the linearity of the trees is continued in the parallel division of the ground into three strips. The narrow entrance zone functions as a vestibule to the house – the building is a rhythmically articulated beam. The eye and the sense of space are drawn upwards by the poplars. The villa consists of a steel table structure reminiscent of an enlarged millipede. Below it are two glass volumes – the dwelling and the garage. The limited exterior materials reinforce the unusual unity of the site. The concrete plinth supports the steel structure, while the glass walls function as windows and facing for the closed walls. The metal blinds around part of the house admit a tempered light and make it difficult to see in. The seashell form of the room with the fireplace makes this the most intimate space, with an indirect view of the garden via the patio. The interior and exterior spaces are unified yet different. The owner or visitor drives in through a narrow entrance strip and exits via the garden strip. situation Stéphane Beel Architecten bvba Poel 15 9000 Gent tl 09 269 51 50 fx 09 269 51 59 [email protected]
