KLA ACTIVITY STAGE English Blends and Word Families Mat

    * Grid with some onsets and rimes in different coloured squares. Children have to move the Bee-Bot to make words.

    S1

English Subject, Verb, Object Mat * Grid with subjects, verbs and objects in different colours. Children make sentences.

    ES1 /S1

Mathematics Number Line Mat * A number line grid used for counting, one to one correspondence, addition, subtraction etc

    ES1 / S1

English/Mathematics Kid Sized Grids * Draw up (or paint) on playground, a grid for children to pretend they are the Bee-Bot and move physically around the grid. They can wear little Bee headbands and/or wings.

    ES1/S1

English Letter Mat * Grid with letters of the alphabet. Children can spell words for partner or teacher can give instruction cards to spell the words. Hint: Pause (at least twice) and/or rotate on the each selected letter.

    ES1/S1

English Listening/ Following Directions * One child uses cards to create a sequence. They instruct a partner who has to listen to the directions and follow.

    ES1/S1

Mathematics Shape Mat * Using positional language, direct a partner to a shape on the mat (uses colour, size and shape)

    ES1/S1

English Busy Street Mat * One child directs another to a given place. Extension multiple stops or turns.

    ES1/S1

    Science and Technology

Animal Mat * Grid with animals. Children given directions to an animal. When they land on it, they have to describe it (oral/written). Eg covering, size etc

    ES1/S1

KLA ACTIVITY STAGE Science and Technology

Design and Make * Children design and make a zoo grid. Write instructions for partners Eg. visit the monkeys, then the snakes, then the elephants. Extension find the shortest route

    ES1/S1

English Picture Mat * Grid with pictures on it each starting with a different letter of the alphabet. Children need to follow route in alphabetical order starting from various points.

    ES1/S1

Mathematics Number Mat * Grid with numbers on it. Children need to follow route in numerical order starting from various points. (counting on)

    ES1/S1

Mathematics Co-ordinates Mat * Grid with letter/number co-ordinates down each axis and pictures in the squares. Children use co-ordinate cards and starting point. Children record route taken.

    Late ES1 S1

English/Mathematics School Scavenger Hunt Mat * Create your own school map on a grid. Children follow clues/directions and find their way around their school to collect items in a scavenger hunt.

    ES1/S1

English/Mathematics Using Books * Use Picture books that take a journey Eg. Nikis Walk, Rosies Walk, A Nice Walk in the Jungle, The Bear Hunt and create grids based on pictures from the story. Children re-create the journey.

    ES1/S1

English/Mathematics Mazes * Children use 3D wooden blocks/arches on a grid to create a maze. They then need to program Bee-Bot to work their way through maze.

    Indicators giving and following simple

directions to position an object or themselves

using everyday language to describe their position in relation to other objects

using everyday language to describe an object in relation to themselves

using everyday language to describe an object in relation to another object

describing position of objects in models, photographs and drawings

using terms left and right to describe the position of objects in relation to themselves

identifying, representing and naming circles, squares, triangles and rectangles (hexagons, rhombuses, trapeziums) in different orientations and in pictures and the environment.

Assessment Task: * Children use drawings to create a route/path and identify objects along the path.

    KLA Activity Stage

    English / HSIE

Using Busy Street map: Direct Bee Bot to particular shop. Children are asked to answer questions related to the shop eg: What is the name of the shop? Do you know the name of the person who works there? What might you find inside? Describe the shop. Use in association with Big Book Nikis Walk Develop your own grid according to your unit (eg the zoo, your school, underwater environment)

    ES1/S1

    English

Write a recount of Bee-Bots journey

    ES1/S1

    English

Read a sequence of steps to take Bee Bot on a journey someone else has constructed

    ES1/S1

    English

Write your own story of a journey for Bee-Bot for someone else to follow.

    ES1/S1

    Science & Technology

Design, draw and label your own street map for Bee- Bot to follow (Use grid paper later may be transferred to larger grid)

    ES1/S1

    Mathematics

Use sequence cards to plot a journey for yourself or for someone else on the street map.

    ES1/S1

English Using the Alphabet Grid Show children a picture card. Ask them to direct Bee-Bot to the beginning sound for the picture. Can be repeated as an oral activity

Using Shape Grid Make a larger overlay using plastic sheet to allow for an additional grid line around the outside of the shape grid to allow for different starting points. Children direct Bee-Bot to a specific shape, follow directions verbal, written, sequence cards and identify destination shape.

Using any grid Program a set of instructions. Children observe path taken then predict destination if the same set of instructions are followed.

Mathematics Measurement Predict how many steps Bee-Bot will take to go through a constructed tunnel

    ES1/S2

Measurement Children work out how many steps Bee-Bot would take to travel a given length e.g.45cm Incorporate time children use stop watch to time journey Pose question Can you find a pattern between length of journey, time taken, number of steps.

    S2

Mathematics Using die Use two dice (large pocket dice/ number dice) Put directional arrows, symbols or words in dice pockets. Roll number dice and directional dice. Child must program Bee- Bot to follow the direction of die. Using two die, one with numbers, one with letters children roll die children follow directions to find a position on a grid

    Using two or more Bee-Bots

Design and Make a Beebot 3D Neighborhood Early Stage One Key Learning Areas: English, Mathematics, HSIE, S&T, CA

    Teaching and Learning Sequence

    1. Allow students opportunities to explore using the Bee-bot street mat. - work in pairs to give each other directions to get to a destination - draw the route their bee-bot has taken - identify the quickest route to a destination - determine how many right hand/left hand turns etc they used - write a story about their bee-bots day out - make their own direction cards for a partner to follow

    2. Organise a neighborhood walk within the community, note the types of buildings, street signs, street numbers, parks, shops etc.

    3. Work in co-operative groups to design and make their own Bee-bot neighborhood.

-discuss the local neighborhood -sketch ideas for buildings, parks etc -provide a full size grid for the students to use to plan their neighborhood -using lego or blocks, design the buildings, bridges, signs, etc and trial the sizes and shapes 4. When the neighborhood is complete students work co-operatively to

complete the activities in sequence 1, using their own design.
