   Dear  Friends

January  is  a  time  of  new  beginnings  and  fr

esh  resolves.  After  stuffing

ourselves  over  Christmas  we  often  resolve  to  eat  less  and  get  fitter  in

the  new  year.    For  me  it  is  much  more  to  do  with  spiritual  fitness.  My

prayer  life  has  got  a  lot  flabbier  over  the  years  as  I  ha

ve  lost  some  of  the

discipline!  In  2015  I  want  to  spend  more  time  in  God’s  presence,  to  be

restored  and  refocused  for  my  journey  of  faith  which  I  t

hink  could  be

true  for  many  of  us.      To  get  physically  fit  you  need  to  exercise

and  also

spiritually  we  need  to  exercise  our  prayer  life  if  we  w

ant  to  deepen  our

relationship  with  God.

As  the  faith  community  we  will  have  more  opportunities  to  pray

together  as  we  get  our  prayer  room  at  St.  Thomas’  off  the  ground.    I  did

wonder  with  a  new  church  heating  system  installed,  we  should  call  th

e

room  ‘The  Boiler  House’,  though  with  the  fitness  idea  in  mind  perhaps  it

ought  to  be  the  ‘Prayer  Gym’!    I  believe  it  will  be  a  reso

urce  not  only  for

our  congregation  but  also  for  other  Christians  in  the

community.    It  can

become  a  centre  for  intercession  and  empowerment  for  building  God’s

Kingdom  in  Bedhampton.  We  will  also  be  teaching  on  various  types  of

prayer  in  the  next  few  months  as  well  as  providing  ideas  at  prayer

seminars  that  will  help  us  in  both  personal  and  private  pra

yer.

Are  you  up  for  getting  spir

itually  fit?

God  bless  and  have  a  won

derful  and  prayer  filled  2015!

The  Three  Kings    Balthazar,  Melchior  and  Caspar,  Three  wise  kings  of  yore,  Came  from  countries  far  and  wide  To  meet  under  God’s  shining  star.    Gazing  upwards  in  wonder  and  awe  They  followed  the  star  to  the  humble  stall,  Where  Baby  Jesus  peacefully  slept  While  Mary  and  Joseph  their  vigil  kept.    They  knelt  before  the  new-‐born  king,  Offering  their  gifts  with  praise,  Gold  for  spiritual  riches,  Frankincense  for  faith,  Myrrh  for  future  suffering,  Meekness  and  the  truth.    Around  the  stable,  with  ox  and  ass,  Shepherds  in  humble  attire.  There  came  the  sound  of  angel  voices,    In  a  glorious  heavenly  choir.

Margaret  Fitzgibbon    50  years  ago  -‐  on  4th  January  1965,  TS  Eliot,  American-‐born  British  poet,  playwright,  literary  critic  and  editor,  died.    He  was  winner  of  the  1948  Nobel  Prize  for  Literature.

Poetry  in  2015  The  Poetry  writing  Group  will  be  meeting  again  throughout  2015.  The  first  meeting  will  be  on  Monday  19th  January,  at  the  home  of  Rev  Chris  Abbott,  6  Winchfield  Crescent,  Leigh  Park  starting  at  7.00  until  8.30pm.    Subsequent  meetings  will  be  16th  March,  18th  May,  20th  July,  21st  September  and  16th  November.

All  are  welcome.    Making  time  for  God  Attending  a  retreat  is  one  way  of  making  time  for  God.  Here,  one  parishioner  describes  her  experience  of  such  events.

On  the  Retreats  that  I  have  been  part  of,  I  have  always  found  peacefulness,  calmness,  friendship,  and  fellowship  in  sharing  the  Gospel  and  hearing  people’s  own  interpretation  of  it.  Quiet  times  for  prayer  and  reflection  and  during  worship,  feeling  our  Lord  alongside,  fun,  laughter  and  good  food  as  well!  I  highly  recommend  these  very  special  times.  Each  retreat  I  have  been  on  has  been  different,  but  all  have  been  a  real  blessing.

More  Messy  Days  in  2015  In  January  2014,  after  many  years  of  prayer,  many    sleepless  nights  and  a  good  team  behind  us,  we    launched  into  our  first  Messy  Church.  We  could    not  have  done  this  without  God’s  vision  before    us  and  His  wisdom  and  Grace  by  our  side.

This  was  not  about  a  numbers  game  but  a  long  term  plan  to  take  our  Christian  faith  to  our  community  in  a  fun  and  engaging  way.  Over  6  sessions  this  year,  we  have  used  endless  cardboard,  pints  of  glue,  soil,  clay,  cookie  dough  and  lots  more,  living  up  to  the  expression  “messy”.    We  have  sung  lots  of  songs,  listened  to  stories,  eaten  hundreds  of  cakes,  and  had  our  faithful  church  folk  praying  at  home  and  in  the  churches.

We  are  now  taking  another  big  leap  of  faith  and  are  going  to  organize  9  messy  church  events  for  2015  …  they  won’t  all  be  in  the  same  format  but  they  will  be  regular  and  fun.

They  are  going  to  be  on  the  following  dates:  January  17th,  February  21st,  March  21st,  April  18th,  May  16th,  June  20th,  July  to  be  decided,  September  19th,  October  31st  and  November  22nd.    We  would  like  to  extend  a  warm  welcome  to  everyone  of  all  ages  to  come.  You  don’t  need  to  book  and  it  is  free,  although  if  you  would  like  to  make  a  donation  to  help  pay  for  the  meal,  that’s  fine.

There  are  cards  in  both                                churches  with  the  dates  so                                    come  and  one  up.  You  may                                                      contact  the  Parish  Office                              for  more  information.

Mission            trips      continue

A  charity  based  in  south  Wales,  Reach  Out  and  Touch  Romania,  started  in  1991  was  set  up  by  Gareth  Jones  after  a  visit  to  Varfurile  in  NW  Romania.

In  some  of  the  remote  villages  in  which  the  charity  is  working,  there  is  still  a  desperate  need  for  clothes,  food,  medicine  and  other  basic  supplies.  Not  only  do  they  aim  to  meet  these  material  needs,  but  also  to  help  with  projects  such  as  a  nursing  home,  an  orphanage,  a  nursery  and  a  school  to  succeed,  in  the  hope  that  this  aid  will  eventually  be  unnecessary.

Mike  Downey  from  our  congregation  is  a  volunteer  driver  for  this  charity  and  in  October  he  travelled  to  remote  areas  of  Transylvania  and  Romania,  taking  much-‐needed  food,  clothing  and  medical  supplies.  He  will  be  speaking  at  the  services  on  Sunday  11th  January  to  give  us  first  hand  stories  of  his  latest  visit.

The  timing  of  the  contract  for  the  playground  meant  that  the  planting  could  not  be  done  before  the  opening.

CHOIR  FILLS  NAVE  A  choral  workshop  in  Portsmouth  Cathedral,  organized  by  the  local  RSCM  proved  very  popular.  More  than  100  singers  from  churches  near  and  far  had  the  opportunity  to  sing  music  by  a  well  known  composer  of  church  music,  Margaret  Rizza.  Directed  by  the  composer  herself,  we  learned  more  of  the  contemplative  style  in  which  she  writes  and  the  intentions  behind  each  piece.  When  composing  a  piece  of  music,  for  her  the  text  is  the  most  important,  with  a  powerful  creative  force  giving  us  energy.

Following  the  workshop,  we  were  joined  by  the  Cathedral  Consort  for  a  service  of  Choral  Evensong  on  an  Advent  theme,  with  several  pieces  by  Margaret  Rizza.  The  service  was  directed  by  Dr  David  Price  with  Oliver  Hancock  on  the  organ  and  cellist  Melina,  one  of  the  new  vergers.  More  Come  and  Sing  events  are  taking  place  around  the  area  early  this  year.  (See  below).         Carol  Frogley

‘In  Flanders  Fields  the  poppies  blow’

Part  2  continues  a  monthly  series  on  the  men  of  Bedhampton  who  lost  their  lives  in  World  War  1  and  whose  names  appear  on  the  War  Memorial  in  St.  Thomas’.

Private  Arthur  Lewis  No.  19213  15th  Bt.,  Hampshire  Regiment  and  his  brother,  Lance  Corporal  John  Melton    Lewis    No  24951  1st  Bt.  Hampshire  Regiment    Arthur  was  born  in  1883  and  his  brother,  John  Melton  in  1885  in  Westbourne,  Sussex  to  a  Welsh  father,  John  and  a  mother,  Louisa,  who  hailed  from  Lovedean.  John  senior  had  been  a  Corporal  in  the  Royal  Marine  Artillery  but  was  a  pensioner  by  the  time  the  boys  were  born.    Tragically  for  the  family,  he  died  around  this  time  at  the  age  of  52.  The  family’s  plight  is  evident  from  the  fact  that  by  1891  both  Arthur  and  John  M  were  in  the  Westbourne  workhouse  as  Louisa  was  clearly  unable  to  support  her  children.  She  was  working  as  a  Housemaid  in  a  Boarding  House  in  Southsea.  By  the  1901  census  Arthur  was  living  with  his  mother  at  Upper  Park  Bedhampton  where  his  uncle,  Richard  Brown,  was  farming.  John  M  was  living  at  the  Causeway,  Hambledon  with  John  Langtry  and  his  wife,  and  working  as  a  breadmaker  in  the  family  grocery  and  bakery  business.

At  the  1911  census,  Arthur  and  John  M  were  both  still  single  and  living  with  their  mother  at  Middle  Park  Farm,  Bedhampton.  Arthur  was  employed  as  a  General  Labourer  and  John  was  a  Wood  Cartman.    Two  of  their  elder  brothers  were  now  serving  in  the  RM  Artillery  just  as  their  father  had  done.

John  probably  married  Emily  May  Burgess  in  Horndean  in  the  months  prior  to  the    outbreak  of  war.

When  war  broke  out  in  August  1914,    Britain  was  the  only  major  combatant  that    did  not  have  a  conscripted  army.  The    Government  and  army  chiefs  realised  that    it  was  a  powerful  recruiting  tool  to  get    friends  to  enlist  together  and  so  were    formed  the  ‘Pals  battalions’.    The  Mayor  of      Portsmouth  launched  an  appeal  to  raise  a    ‘Pals’  battalion.  The  response  was  huge  from  the  young    men  in  this  area  and  a  thousand  men  enlisted  to  form  the  1st  Portsmouth  Pals,

A  map  of  Westbourne  showing  the     (14th  Hampshire  Bt.)              location  of  the  workhouse.

Page 11: Bedhampton Parish Magazine January 2015

  www.bedhamptonparish.org.uk     9

Amongst  the  new  recruits  for  the  next  Pals  battalion  was  Arthur  Lewis,  now  living  at  East  View  Cottage,  Middle  Park  Farm,  Bedhampton.    With  him  were  William  Henry  Little  of  North  Street,  Arthur  Mengham  of  Barncroft  Cottages  and  A.R.Carter  of  3  New  Road  to  help  form  the  2nd  Portsmouth  ‘Pals’  (or  15th  Hampshire  Bt.).    Arthur’s  enlisting  was  reported  in  the  Portsmouth  Evening  News  on  23  August  1915.

Little  is  known  of  the  details  of  both  men’s  war  service    or  how  they  came  to  die.    Many  of  the  personal  service    records  of  the  men  who  served  in  World  war  1  were    destroyed  by  enemy  bombing  during  the  Second  World    War.  What  we  do  know  is  that  Arthur  died  aged  33  at    the  Somme  on  15  September  1916,  possibly  in  the  fields    between  Flers  and  Longueval.  He  was  buried  in  Bulls  Road    cemetery,  Flers.  (photo,  right).  John  was  killed  in  action    aged  32  in  Flanders  on  4th  Oct  1917.    He  is  buried  at    Poelcapelle  British  cemetery  in  Belgium.

December  Crossword    Solution

How  did  Christmas  begin  for  you  this  year?    For  millions  of  radio  listeners,  it  begins  on  Christmas  Eve  with  the  clear  treble  voice  of  a  single  Cambridge  choirboy.    As  has  happened  every  year  since  1919,  he  begins  the  hymn  ‘Once,  in  Royal  David’s  City’  at  the  service  of  Nine  Lessons  and  Carols,  broadcast  from  King’s  College  Chapel.    The  hymn  was  written  by  a  Mrs  Alexander  in  1848,  who  was  inspired  by  the  Apostles’  Creed:    ‘….born  of  the  virgin  Mary.’      It  is  a  superb  introduction  to  Christmas:      ‘Once,  in  royal  David’s  city,  stood  a  lowly  cattle-‐shed,  where  a  mother  laid  her  baby,  in  a  manger  for  his  bed.    Mary                        was  that  mother  mild,  Jesus  Christ                        her  little  child.    He  came  down  to                        earth  from  heaven,  Who  is  God  and                      Lord  of  all;  and  his  shelter  was  a                      stable,  and  his  cradle  was  a  stall.                        With  the  poor  and  mean  and  lowly                      lived  on  earth  our  Saviour  holy.’

There  has  been  an  increase  of  house  burglaries  lately  in    the  area  of  Havant  and  Waterlooville  as  a  whole.  Thankfully,  Bedhampton    has  been  affected  by  only  one  (although  this  of  course  is  one  too  many).    With  this  in  mind,  please  find  below  some  information  regarding  our    Lights  On  campaign  and  other  security  advice.

Our  Bedhampton  burglary  was  carried  out  by  removing  the  glass  unit  from  a  rear  UPVC  type  door.  This  was  an  old  style  door  where  the  beading  is  external  (which  means  the  glass  is  put  in  and  removed  from  the  outside).  Newer  style  windows  and  doors  have  internal  beading,  so  you  have  to  be  inside  to  remove  the  glass.  If  you  have  externally  beaded  doors  or  windows,  it  may  be  possible  to  secure  the  glass  in  place  using  security  tape  which  would  sit  between  the  glass  and  frame,  but  this  would  depend  on  the  frame  design  and  space  available  within.  Some  middle-‐aged  units  which  are  externally  beaded  will  already  be  security  taped.  If  you  have  any  concerns  regarding  the  security  of  your  doors  or  windows,  please  feel  free  to  contact  us  by  email  or  101  and  we  can  come  round  to  take  a  look  and  help  advise  you.

In  the  winter  the  lack  of  lights  on  in  a  house  during  the  darker  evenings  can  indicate  that  no  one  is home  -‐  attracting  an  opportunist  burglar  to  look  further  for  insecurities  to  enter  the  property.  Leaving  a  light  on  while  you  are  out  and  shutting  the  curtains  helps  to  make  a  home  look  occupied.  Timer  switches  can  be  used  to  turn  lights  on  in  dark  evenings  before  you  return  from  work.

We  began  our  Mothers’  Union  meeting  on    Wednesday  26th  November  by  remembering    Dorothy  Robinson  in  silence  for  a  few  moments  so  we  could  each  recollect  our  own  memories  of  this  very  long  standing  member  of  M.U.    It  is,  of  course,  with  sadness  I  am  writing  this  account  as  usually  Dorothy  wrote  our  reports.    Marion  (standing  in  for  Ann  who  was  away  visiting  her  daughter  in  Chester)  opened    the  meeting  by  welcoming  Bobbie  Proud  who  had  come  to  talk  to  us  about  worship.    Prior  to  the  talk  we  were  shown  the  photo  of  the    toilet  at  St.  Thomas  because  M.U.  have  funded  a  new  toilet  which  is  part  of  the  ongoing  project  of  twinning  a  toilet.    This  will  be  especially  appreciated  by  ladies  in  Sierra  Leone.      We  then  invited  Olive  Sheasby  and  and  Pat  Jay  to  hold  this  picture  while  we  all  gathered     Dorothy  Robinson  round  and  Bobbie  took  our  photo  so  watch  this  space.!!!    (See  below!)  This  caused  a  lot  of  laughter  and  hilarity  with  toilet  comments  –  such  as,  “Please  may  I  be  excused  Miss!!!!”  This  was  followed  by  a  very  enlightening  talk  by  Bobbie  about  different  ways  in  which  we  can  worship  and  different  forms  services  have  taken  over  the  years.  People  would  stand  to  pray  and,  what  is  more,  prayed  with  their  eyes  open.        We  older  ones  will  well  remember  being  told  to  shut  our  eyes  tightly  when  praying  so  as  not  to  be  distracted.        However,  this  leads  on  to  the  fact  that  we  should  remember  we  can  pray  at  anytime  and  anywhere,  just  short  phrases  such  as  Thanks,  Forgive  us,  Give  us  courage,  etc  and  so  we  can  do  this    anywhere  with  our  eyes    open.    I  am  sure  we  found  these  thoughts  very  helpful  as  I  know

we  are  rather  used  to  the  concept  of  kneeling  or  sitting  quietly  with  bowed  heads  to  pray.

The  meeting  ended  with  our      usual  refreshments.    We  are  looking  forward  to  our  Carol  Service  in  St.  Thomas  Church  and  we  welcome  visitors  to  our  New  Year  Party  on  28th  January.          We  wish  everyone  at  St.  Thomas  and  St.  Nicholas  a  Happy  Christmas.
