Dear Readers, Please check to see if you have sent your 2014 renewal. We don’t have a good way yet under our new system to easily flag and send you notices. (Before we just had the expiration on our mail label). It will help us tremendously if you could check to see if you have sent your 2014 renewal. If not, you can either send renewals to: ROSE FAMILY ASSOCIATION, Christine Rose, 761 Villa Teresa Way, San Jose, CA 95123 or let us know that you want to pay by PAYPAL. In the latter case we will send to you an email through Paypal which you can use to arrange your payment to them and they will confirm to use.We will at some point issue a new password for 2014 renewals and new members.

Letters and email we have received would indicate that the new online access is being enjoyed both as a way of getting the issues faster, and for many of you, omitting the necessity of having to save a paper copy! Summertime is here - if you are attending a Rose family reunion please take a photo or two for us. Be sure to label the people shown and send it to us for publication with details on when and where the reunion was held. Preferably it can be sent by email though if that is not possible it can be mailed. We are seeking personal accounts, perhaps about 1 to 2 pages in length, of mem-bers’ more immediate families. We often write of the distant ancestors but somehow don’t seem to find time to write a more personal account of our parents or grandparents or even great-grandparents. Their hobbies? Work? Living conditions (farm, town, etc.) - anything interesting that might reflect some idea of them as the people they were. Send 2-4 photos with it. If it needs some editing we can do that but we all enjoy such accounts and would like to publish more orf these. We thank you all for your continued support. We would have ended publication years ago if it had not been for the wonderful people we hear from constantly who support and enjoy the news of the Roses. Is it possible to believe we are nearing our 50th year of publication!? Christine and Seymour Rose

In doing onsite research at courthouses look for those indexes. If using microfilm, check those entries also.

Lewis Martin Rose aka Martin Lewis RoseOf Illinois

Sent by Afton Page of St. George, Utah before her untimely death many years ago. Martin was born 13 January 1829 in Ohio and died 11 November 1905 in Scott County, Illinois. He is buried in Green Pond

Cemetery, Pike or Milton, Illinois. He married 9 March 1871 in Scott County to Emily McPherson who was born 25 March 1832 in Morgan or Pike and died in Milton, Pike County 26 May 1920.Afton Paige was an avid researcer and intensely interested in identifying the origins of this family. She died far too young before she could find the answers she sought. The father of Lewis was Cornelius Rose who was born ca 1794 in New Jersey and married 22 May 1828 in Licking County, Ohio. His wife was Catharine Osborn who was born in 1794 in New Jersey. Their children: Lewis Martin (photo to the left); John b. 1832; Dorcas 1834; Cornelius 1836 and Elizabeth 1840.Cornelius Rose left a Bounty Land application file with valuable information. This verifies the Ohio location.

Editor Christine and Afton were working on the theory that this family was connected to John Rose of Greene County, Illinois,

Lewis Martin Rose and wife Emily McPherson

Dr. Joseph Rose

Claude Rose of Memphis, Tennes-see, worked for many years before his death (over 25 years ago) on his Roses around Haywood County, Tennessee. While doing his research he wrote us about Dr. Joseph Rose who at that time was in the Dept. of Chemistry at Midwestern University, Wichita Falls, Texas. Says Claude: “J. E. Rose and Sallie Ann Mitchell Rose are grparents of Dr. Joe Earle Rose, Prof. Chem. Midwestern University, Wichita Falls, TX and Earl Rose b. Mar. 11, 1899, d. Dec. 17, 1940 was

his father. His mother was Mary Midgette, now a widow and still runs a general store at Vildo that J. E. Rose originated ca 1888. J. E. Rose b. Aug. 4, 1867, d. Apr. 5, 1901, had a brother John who had 3 sons that went to Hardeman Co., James, John and Gussie Edward Rose. At first I thought they were my clan and later found they were the Johnston Co., N.C. group.”Editor’s note: What wonderful memo-ries we have of Claude and his wife Louise who on more than one occa-sion in the 60s and 70s had our very small trailer with us and four small children camped in his backyard in Memphis!

Send photos of your early Roses! Be sure to include their information on the back.

In a 2001 issue of Rose Family Bulletin we published the Texas State pension (Confederate) for Robert Rose #4033. This showed that in 1899 he was aged 60, resided Stockdale, Wilson Co., Texas, and that he served in Co. F Bates Reg. The following is a separate pen-sion file for his widow Sarah, filed after his death. In 1916 she was rejected but in 1917 she was granted a pension. NOTE: It is important that this is an Index to Heirs. Without this index, these people could be overlooked. It would be important to check the Book and page number to ascertain to whom they were heirs! It could be that someone with an heretofore unknown surname named one of these in a will because of a familial relationship. We should always consider what type of index was created. In this case, checking each of these files could prove significant. Those mentioned in a Rose line are likely unknown to researchers, but some might be linked to other surnames.

Remembering Abbie Shelton

While working on Roses your editor often comes across photos of past members from years long gone. I have so many memories of working enthusiastically on Roses with these early members and thought that present-day descen-dants of the same families would enjoy seeing their photos and re-membering the work they did to preserve the family records.

One such person was Abbie Shel-ton of Salt Lake City. For many years in the 1970s and 1980s until

her death in 1988. Abbie, who, was tracing her own Rose line from Deacon John Adams and his wife Chloe Rose, of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and New York. Additionally, Abbie was helping her niece Merilyn Ender with the Bluford C. Rose family (son of Wil-loughly Rose of Warren County, North Carolina, to Kentucky and Missouri.Since Abbie lived in SLC she had easy access to many records and was always willing to help others and of course, work on her own lines. We are sure she has family relatives who now enjoy the fruits of the ernest research Abbie did when online researching was not available!!

Timothy Rose, Revolutionary soldier, memorialized200 Years After His Death [New England Rose family]

In an article by-lined by Drew Brackenm Advocate Correspondent, in the Newark [Ohio] Advocate of July 21, 2013, a lengthy interesting article dated at Granville. Condensed:: One of Granville’s founding fathers received special recognition with a grave-marking cemetery. The ceremony started at the Old Academy Building across the street from the Old Colony Burying Ground, where Sgt. Timothy Rose was interred. The small crowd included members of the Sons of the American Revolution in period uniforms. They marched to the gravesite where the headstone was unviewed with the new marker. [Timothy Rose was a descendant of Robert Rose and his wife Margery of Wethersfield and Branford, Con-necticut, from a branch later of Granville, Massachu-setts. Several from the latter branch migrated to Ohio and founded Granville in Licking County. [Sent by member Betty Rose #0077R80 of Newark, Ohio]

Descendant of Reuben Rose of Robertson County, Tennessee and Edgecombe County, North Carolina

Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Hornsby Sr., David E. & Howard Hornsby III and Little Jay Hopper. From a Christmas photo sent by Lizzie Hornsby probably in the 1980s, now deceased. This family descended from James Bryant 3 Rose, Reuben2, Robert1 of Edgecombe Co., North Carolina) born 28 July 1815 (g.s.), Tennessee, died 31 October 1884 (g.s.), buried Rose Graveyard. This family is part of Group A-1 of the YDNA project, and are probable descendants of Richard Rose of Southampton County, Virginia. It should be noted that many posted trees on the Internet show Ann to be a Wright. Someone posted that without documentation many years ago and it is often copied and transmitted, but there is no substantial evidence that she was a Wright. Perhaps someone can do further research on this in the records of England and give us a report on the findings.Unfortunately, there are many errors in posted Rose trees of various Rose families on the Internet. Though the posted trees can be used for clues, a generation by generation search backed up by copies of documents could correct many of them.

David tells us that his dad’s mother, Rose Rose, was a piano teacher. their parents owned a catering business and all of the boys worked in it at some point in time andin various positions. David and his wife, Darlene, have been working on their family genealogy for several years and have made some exciting discoveries. They located his great-grandparents, Alexander Charles Rose and Mary Carey Rose’s grave in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and found that he had a son Arthur who died at 9 months of age. His great-grandfather’s parents were Charles Rose and Catherine McDonald, and Mary Carey’s parents were Thomas Carey who had a wife named Ann. Her family was from Prince Edward Island. David’s family belongs to Group G of the Y-DNA project. That group is related to the Rev. Robert of Albermarle County, Virginia and Nairnshire, Scotland, thus, the Kilravock Roses. on the family of Matthew Madi-son Rose of Callaway County, Missouri and Ohio and trying to find what connection he may have to the family of Joseph Rose of Marshfield, Massachusetts. She also tells us that she will be attending the Matthew Madison Rose family reunion in Fulton, Callaway, Missouri on June 1, 2014. She is hoping to get addi-tional information on the family while there. Member Gail Halas (formerly) Schulz attended our 1996 Rose gathering together with Lois Pearson. They were researching the family of John Rose (who mar-ried Hannah Addleman) of Greene County, Pennsylvania. Gail is now carrying on the work and hopes to learn more of the background of this family. This family is part of Group K of the DNA project; they all have connections somehow to Long Island Roses though the connections have not yet been determined.

COURTHOUSE REPORTS AVAILABLE!Most members are familiar with the Family Reports offered by the Rose Family Association, but few are familar with the Courthouse Research Reports. For example, if you are tracing the John Rose of Green County, Pennsylvania, the John and Hannah (Addleman) Rose Family Report will give all the items we have that have been identified as being connected. But, what about the other Roses in that county who might be connected but have not been identified as related? What is the difference, you ask, between a Family Report and a Courthouse Report? The Family Report contains all we know of the family from a variety of sources - deeds, estates, census, Bibles, war files, gravestones. etc. Otherwise, it contains information of the Roses of that particular family that we can identify as being of the family. In contrast, the courthouse report will contain information from deeds, estates, vital records, court records, etc. found on our trip to the courthouse of that county whether or not we can identify them as being of the family. Therefore, it is important to study the courthouse records for clues to possible relatives who have not yet been identified as being tied to the subject of the Family Report. For example, on the above, the John Rose Family Report contains twenty-one pages concerning 3-4 generations of the family. The Courthouse Report of Green County, Pennsylvania, contains nineteen pages of information from the courthouse of Green County, all concerning Rose, but not all readily identified as being of the John Rose family. Thus, researchers can examine the courthouse report abstracts and perhaps find clues on other Roses in the same vicinity, and in the same time period. They can then be researched for possible connections. How to find these listings on our website? Go to: www.RoseFamilyAssociation.com. Then go to “For Purchase.” Then go to “Rose Family Reports” to check for those, and go to “Courthouse Re-search Reports” to see check if there is one available for the county in which that family lived.
