God’s Melting Pot Rev. David Barnes

Last month we hosted a very successful Celebration Day Camp

here at 1st Presbyterian. Over 60 children, adults and teens joined in

“Christmas in July” with a surprisingly good caroling concert put on at

Greenfield Retirement Home. The kids and volunteers had a wonderful

time.

It reminded me though… how often we eagerly anticipate

Christmas. Then when it arrives, there is enormous excitement. But by

the end of Christmas Day – when all the presents are unwrapped and

the food is eaten – many families feel tired or even bored. And they

begin to look for something else to do.

According to the National Association of Theater Owners [the

other NATO], Christmas Day is a very close second to Thanksgiving Day

as the busiest day of the whole year for people going to the movies.

And the next few days after Christmas don’t slow down much!

Our church has waited a long time for a new Called Minister.

We’ve had several good interims and an enormous amount of solid

leadership and hard work from our staff and members. But now we

are hopefully getting close to the day we’ve all been waiting for.

When God does send us a new pastor, let’s remember to let this

be the beginning of our time of celebration, not the end. Let’s go to

church even more than before – and even more than Pastor David

goes to the movies! Let’s redouble our efforts and help make this new

ministry one of the best future memories our church has ever enjoyed!

Join Circle!

Circle will begin September 12th with a potluck lunch. All women

are invited to come and discover all the good things we do.

Regular meetings will be held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at

1 p.m. in various homes. More information to follow!

The June meeting of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church took place on the 19th with an opening

prayer by Rev. Jim Friedmeyer, of the Henry Presbyterian church who is now the church moderator. The

minutes of the previous meeting and the Treasurer’s report were accepted as written. Rev. David Barnes

who is our summer interim minister also attended. The financial agreement between our church and Rev.

Barnes was discussed, approved and sent to Hampshire Colony Church for their approval.

The number of communicants on the first Sunday in June was 35. Carolyn Workman and Pam Cochran

attended the Presbytery meeting on June 12th.

Bible school will be held on July 16th at our church with the First Christian church in charge of the program.

Rev. Friedmeyer said that Presbytery will be asking all congregations to report their Evangelism and

Mission activities.

The session is looking into the possibility of having the Presbyterian Foundation manage our investments.

Rev. Karl Johnson will preach on June 24th and Ron McCutchan will provide special music on July 15th.

It was agreed that our church will host the annual Thanksgiving service on November 21, 2018. Rev.

Adam Webber will be preaching.

Rev. Barnes discussed the Workday 2019 which will take place next summer and our church has agreed

to participate in this project. The next meeting of the committee will be August 8th and Mark Schultz will

be asked to attend that meeting. Money will need to be raised for that project.

The Ministerial Association will again sponsor the project of packing meals to be used in emergencies. The

dates for this will be either the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of January. Five shifts of 85 people will be needed to set

up the site, pack the meals and clean up. Money will need to be raised for this project.

Six youngster from the church are going to Stronghold camp. Three of them are members of the church

and they are each bringing a friend. The church is paying for their camping week.

Rev. Friedmeyer closed the meeting with prayers from the Presbytery.

Don't forget to pick up your FREE copy of "Our Daily Bread" in the Narthex!

Our Daily Bread is a devotional calendar-

style booklet published by Our Daily Bread

Ministries in over 55 languages. The booklet is one of the most widely

read Christian devotionals in circulation

today.

Excerpted from "Our Daily Bread" Ministries

By David C. Egners

A pastor told me a fascinating story of a church in a

Canadian fishing village. The founding fathers had chosen

to build the church at the rocky edge of the Atlantic

Ocean. Because it was located in the center of where the

fishermen and townspeople lived, the church flourished.

As the congregation grew, however, the members decided

to construct a new building far from the waterfront. Then

an interesting thing happened. They seemed to lose their

zeal for the lost after they moved. Why? Some said it was

because they were no longer among the people.

We see in Mark 1 that Jesus began His ministry by walking

along the Sea of Galilee and calling fishermen to be His

disciples. He told them, “Follow Me, and I will make

you become fishers of men” (v.17).

Where are the “fish” in our communities? Do we expect

them to come on their own to our church and hear the

pastor present the gospel? Or have we chosen to follow

Christ and become fishermen who dare to go to where the

fish are, taking the message of life and hope to our

schools and workplaces and neighborhoods?

Just as we won’t catch fish in a kitchen sink, we can’t

“catch” souls if we don’t go where they are.

You do not have to cross the seas

Nor foreign lands explore

To share God's Word with needy souls—

You'll find them right next door. —Anon.
