Q.What moisturiser would you recommend for different skin types?

A.We’re lucky to live on an island with a temperate climate and surrounded by water – our skin is naturally moisturised for most of the

year, only needing to be boosted in cold, wind and sun.

Normal to oily skin will really benefit from Rose Dew, a serum-like hydrating moisturiser to lift and tighten. Add a drop of Rose Elixir to soften and deeply nourish dry flaky areas in a dryer environment. Dryer and thinner skins need more protection and nourishment with daily Skin Treat and Skin Comfort overnight.

How long have you been a make-up artist and how did you train? I have been a make-up artist for 25 years. I starting my training through a course offered at the BBC which no longer exists. I then moved on to assisting make-up artists who I learned from by watching how they created different looks for each of their jobs. In my opinion, watching is one of the best ways to learn from someone, especially when assisting, as it allows you to gain hands on experience.

If you had to choose one fail safe product from à la Carte which one would it be and why?The wonderful thing about à la Carte is that many of the products can be custom made for you, so the choice is endless, but if I had to name my favourites I would say Rose Elixir, the eye shadows, lipsticks, and foundations. The eye shadows have a range of finishes, including Matte, Demi-Matte and Shimmer, which all have excellent pigmentation without being chalky. The lipsticks have a wonderful creamy texture which does not bleed on the lips. The foundations feel light on the skin but have great coverage so a little goes a long way. I love mixing a highlighter with a foundation to give the skin an amazing glow. What are your top beauty tips for readers at home?

* If you want a great nude lip, start by covering the lip with foundation and then putting lip balm over the lip to give it a glossy effect.

* Use two colours of blusher or shader to add extra dimension to the face.

* To get a naturally full looking lash, use black mascara at the root and brown on the tips.

* If you don’t have an eyelash curler, use a gently warmed teaspoon to accentuate the natural curl of the lash.

* Always use a light dusting of powder to set your make-up. What are the main make-up trends for 2014/15? Make-up is stripped back with focus on delicate and dewy skin which glows from within. A light wash of a pastel nude shadow around the eye is an alternative to a smoky eye. Cheeks are lovely sheer plums or pinks with a very dewy look, all brought together with a bright lip to add the perfect finish.

What makeup tool should be in every makeup bag?Basic tools are essentials: cotton buds, tissues and great quality brushes.

What is your favourite makeup look you have done on a client and how would you achieve it?For the British Academy Television Awards with Emilia Fox, we were influenced by the amazing dress she wore. Emilia has great skin, which is always a good start, so we created a simple dewy base with a light dusting of bronzer and blusher to suit the colour and texture of the dress. We created a rosegold metallic eye with heavy black eyeliner and mascara and finished the look off with a simple glossy flesh nude lip, which is a red carpet classic.

For a photo shoot with Nigella Lawson, I was inspired by the Italian screen goddesses my father loved as I was growing up. Nigella loves a nude lip, so we decided to use a naked nude lip pencil topped with a soft vanilla nude gloss. To go with this, we went for a strong eye look, using aubergine shimmer all over the lid with a slight wing as well as bringing it under the eye to create a smoky effect. To thicken the lash line, I smudged in liner before applying false lashes. To really accentuate her cheek bones we used a soft magnolia pink on the apples of her cheek before contouring and finishing off with a soft highlighter on the top of the cheek bone.

How did you discover à la Carte and what is it about the British brand that you like?I first discovered à la Carte when I went to the store to try my hand at using the products. I took more pieces than I needed but put them straight into my kit. I added more products from à la Carte as different jobs came up and they have now become essentials in my kit due to their simplicity and being able to have products custom made for my needs.

What do you think the future of make-up will be?I believe that science will have an increasingly important role to play in the future of make-up. Technology allows us to research new raw ingredients, which leads to new properties and formulas being developed in labs.

When working on client what are the most common questions you are asked?Questions tend to vary depending on the age of the client. My younger clients tend to ask for the best way to get rid of spots, how to choose the right foundation, what are the best mascaras and how should they shape their brows. On the other hand, my slightly older clients ask how to create certain looks, such as a smoky eye and a long lasting lip, as well has how to make lips look fuller and eyes look bigger for a more youthful look. I’m often asked how and where to apply blush and contouring to create a more sculpted look.

How would you advise a young make-up artist hoping to establish themselves?The industry is very different now to how it was when I first started. When I began you would go to a college to experience all aspects of the industry before deciding how you want to be involved and looking for assisting opportunities. These days there is such an emphasis on social media as a means of networking that you can contact people through Twitter and Facebook in order to find opportunities to assist on shoots. Another option is working for make-up companies, many of which have programmes where you can begin by working in the store, and then progress to the make-up team and kick start your career in this way.

A.Contouring looks most natural when you use a matte contour and sculpt for cheekbones. Deliver a mean cheekbone rather than a stripe.

A Cheek brush will always deliver a professional result. Dab your brush in the contour colour and shake off any excess, Suck in your cheeks and apply, in an oval shape, on and under the cheekbone. Then use the paler colour on and over the cheekbone. Blend colours together.

Q.How do I achieve 60’s flicks with eyeliner?

A.With your eyeliner brush or pen start a series of dots upwards from the outer corners of your

eyes, as far out as you wish. Look down into a mirror and dot inwards along the top lash line. Now join the dots, build-up the liner right into the lash-line and thicken towards the outer edge of the flick.

TIP: Have a little practice with a cotton bud dipped in a touch of Secret Light eyelid primer and concealer on hand for tidying-up mistakes.

Q.How do you build fuller lashes with mascara without clumping?

A. In the words of ‘Lash Queen’ Sue Marsh: Divine Lash has been a wow with my clients,

I recommend it every day. The brush is sensational for applying a fine layer from root to tip in a zig-zag motion. For day, I advise two layers, with two more layers in the evening to add extra volume without flaking or ‘Panda Eyes’.

TIP: New mascara is usually over-filled so you can wipe off any excess on the tip to prevent blobs. A clean Spiral Mascara brush will separate the lashes in between coats.
