The Carolina Blue Dots
“Those Summer Days”
Carolina Beach Music Awards’ Nominees for the Best Group
Album of the Year - 2020
This was the lineup on their “Those Summer
Days” CD. So far, fi ve releases from “Those Sum-
mer Days” have landed accumulatively on several
Beach Music charts.
It could just have easily been nominated BEST CD
OF NOTHING-BUT-ORIGINAL songs.
W. Clay Lee wrote them all, with a group of *Play-
ers* to back him.
Although their fi rst CD still has miles to go with
other songs primed to hit the charts following
“Shaggin’ with My Baby” and “Those Summer
Days,” they already have a second CD of ORIGINALS
almost ready.
They have a refreshing retro-approach on some
songs, while others come all the way up to the
edges of today.

Godspeed to Wyman Hunnicutt
-- Fessa’ John Hook
We imagine the late Wyman Hunnicutt, co-owner of the
Williams Lake Dance Club, lounging around the heavenly
version of the Williams Lake pavilion, no need for sun block,
and lotsa friends to share the celestial sunshine.
Wyman and brother Robert brought joy to thousands
in the 60s and early 70s with the fi nest Beach Music bands
around.

Billy Scott-the Georgia Prophet celebrating a Merry Christmas
Billy Scott, Janet Helms, and Barbara Scott grace the
front cover this month. It’s been an interesting year for Billy.
His very last recording with Forevermore Music, “Come Back
to Me,” did well on the charts this year.
His Christian name was Peter Pendleton. We miss him,
and celebrate his never-ending smile
A reprint of the Billy Scott story is available to Patreon

Beach Music Top 40
News-- Fessa’ John Hook
This week’s Beach Music Top 40 features Chadwick
Station at the # 1 slot for the 2nd week in a row. They’re
basically a rock band from the UK, now headquartered in
Nashville. However, the success of “Cryin’ Ain’t Gonna Win
Her Back” has turned their heads somewhat toward Beach
Music. We’ll see how far their heads have turned.
The Entertainers continue to rack ‘em up on the chart.
At # 2 their Drifters Medley opens the way in 2021 for their
latest CD (what else is on it? I’m eager to fi nd out).
“Shaggin’ with My Baby” by the Carolina Blue Dots has
fi nally surpassed the number four position. They’re at # 3,
with a CD that has put three songs on the Beach Music Top
40 this year and another is eminent.
Split Shot of South Carolina has #4 this week – they’ve
already been up to # 1. It’s their usual, uptempo fare…some
boogie and fas’ dance throughout.
“Got to Be You” by Gary Lowder and Smokin’ Hot has
fi nally found its head, I think. This has been a monster year
for Gary Lowder. Well deserved.
Bo Schronce – Wait, I thought he retired?! – retired the
Fantastic Shakers, but he’s still on the hunt. “Which Way to
the Beach” is an update to a song he did a few years ago,
and it’s apparently being well-received.
Gary Alexander has been on the Beach scene for a long
while. Congratulations, Gary, your fi rst solo eff ort to climb
the charts and you’re in the Top Ten.
At # 9, Dwight Nichols can’t write or sing a bad song with
the Catalinas. “Stranded” is melancholy, in a sweet, end-
of-the-summer way.
When I fi rst saw the Carolina Blue Dots’ “Coolin’ Out”
I was afraid it was a remake of the Lamont Dozier classic.
Fear not! It’s an original song, doing well.
Number 11 is Tara Coe’s fi rst release. We CAN’T WAIT for
the next!
# 40 is the big surprise out of left fi eld. Morgan Wallen’s
“Seven Summers” may rank up there with Scotty McCreery’s
“Barefootin’.”

Don Miller, Burlington, NC, Has Taken His Weejuns to Beach
Music Heaven
T h e W E E J U N S o f B u r l i n g t o n
Don Miller (owner – manager)
1959
While attending Elon College, (now Elon University), Don
Miller and several fraternity brothers (Iota Tau Kappa, known
as I.T.K.), were “jamming out” to Rock and Roll music one
afternoon with their instruments, just “cutting up” and hav-
ing fun, in the student union. They were playing the music
of the times (the 50’s), Fat’s Domino, Chuck Berry, Jimmy
Reed, James Brown, and “Mo-town” sounds. Unaware that
another fraternity was listening to them as they played.
Original Group: Don Miller – Electric Guitar & Vocal
Joe Lee – Sax & Vocal
Ham Harding – Trombone & Vocal
Ed Higgins – Piano, Organ & Vocal
Tommy Mastin – Electric Bass
Pat Kelly - Drums
After a while several members of the other fraternity,
(Kappa Si Nu) came over and said “you guys are pretty good,
can we hire you to play at one of our parties? We laughed
and said “sure!” Our fi rst “Gig” was for $50.00.
We played at the party for Kappa Si on a Saturday night
(we had no name, just “The Band”), and on Monday the
“buzz word” on campus was that there was a Rock and Roll
band on campus!
Several days later I was in line, in the “chow hall”, and the
president of the student body came over to me and said: “I
hear that you guys have a rock and roll band.” I laughed,
and said; “Whatever !?”
He said: “The student body would like to hire you guys
to play for a school dance, what is the name of your band?”
I told him that we did not have a name, but I was sure that
we could come up with one.

We did, “THE WEEJUNS”, as most students were wearing
WEEJUN “penny” loafers at school, and so did the very good
“Fast Dancers” down at the beach pavilions. (“the Shag”, or
“Shagging” was NOT a word back then, we simply said “Do
you fast dance?”)
The WEEJUNS played at the college dance and were a
success!
Shortly after the school dance a member of the student
body went home, to Charlotte, for the week end, and while
he was in Charlotte phoned a booking agent “Hit Attractions”
and told him about “The WEEJUNS”.
I received a letter at the school post offi ce from “Hit At-
tractions” in Charlotte, N.C. (at that time the largest booking
agent in the South), inquiring about “The WEEJUNS”. The
president, Ted Hall, was asking if he could book the band,
and did we have any photos?
We purchased Dinner Jacket Tuxedos with all the trim,
and new black Bass “Weejun” Loafers, and made the band
photos.
This was our real beginning!
In those days, almost all musicians were playing in Or-
chestras, Churches,
Country Music bands, or the school band. Don and Tom-
my, were self taught; Joe, Ham, and Pat had been in high
school band; and Ed had takenprivate lessons. But Now, we
all played “by ear”; by learning the songs, of the day, from
the 45rpm records.
To my knowledge, at that time, we were the only white
guys playing “Rock & Roll” in the Burlington area; and we
played mostly black music as was being played on the radio
at that time. This was a unique event, something diff erent!
The 60’s:
I was still in school on a football scholarship and a Phys.
Ed major planning to coach and teach, but after college
decided to continue with the band as we were being paid to
have fun, and I really liked “Mo-town music.”
At this time the word “Beach Music” or “Shag music” did
not exist in Burlington.
