From our Principal Mrs Kerri Moore
Dear Parents and Students
This is our mid-term newsletter for Term 3.
On my return to the school last week I saw many new faces as we have had a
significant number of new enrolments for this term. I would like to welcome
back our existing families and welcome our new families to the Rosedale
school community. I would also like to welcome Warren Creighton who began
this term as our permanent Junior Secondary Head of Department. I also
extend my thanks to Josh Morris, Anthony Holt and Britta Munce who took on Principal, Deputy and
Head of Department roles in my absence.
Term 3 is notoriously the busiest term in the secondary school term and is particularly stressful for our
Year 12 students who have major assessment pressure, QTAC applications as well as QCS. Please
keep a close eye on your student if they are in Year 12 and let us know immediately if they need extra
support at this time.
This term we also have a number of important school organisational events occurring with our Financial
Audit in Week 4, NAPLAN On-line Readiness testing in Week 6 and School Review in Week 10 as well
as our other normal curricula and extra-curricula activities.
As I mentioned this term we will be participating in a Full School Review with a team of external
reviewers who will provide a written report at the end of the review that will help us to develop our next
Four Year Plan. This Plan sets the direction for us to follow in our continuing journey of school
improvement. Looking back I see some of the major improvements that we have made over the years
with some great outcomes for our students but we still want to do better for all our students. You can
assist us in this review by having your say. If you are interested in speaking with the Review Team
please contact the school and let us know. I have included some information on the Review below.
Another important way you can have your say is to give us feedback in the School Opinion Survey.
NAIDOC DAY is being held this Friday
16 August and the theme for this year
will be “Voice. Treaty.
Truth.” Students will interact with Elders
and participate in a number of traditional
activities throughout the day. Selected
students will also take part in bush tucker
cooking and demonstrations with special
guest chef Dale Chapman. If you would
like to participate in events during the
day please contact the school.
We have been fortunate to have very
warm weather to date but I would like to remind students and parents that jeans and leggings of any
kind are not accepted as part of the school uniform. Plain black tracksuit pants and jumpers are the
best items for winter. If you are in doubt about an item of uniform please check with the school first to
save expense in having to replace something that is not acceptable.

Information on our School Review
Every Queensland state school is reviewed by the School Improvement Unit (SIU) at least once every four years. The reviews are an important part of how the department supports and monitors schools. The reviews provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs. Principals use the review findings to work with their school community and assistant regional director (or principal supervisor) to develop clear actions to move the school forward. Reviews are conducted by experienced educators trained in the use of the National School Improvement Tool, a nationally recognised framework for reviewing teaching and learning practices. Each review team generally consists of two to four reviewers, but the number of reviewers and length of review depends upon a range of factors, including the size and context of the school. Reviewers look closely at each school’s performance data and speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school. Unlike many other review systems, schools aren’t ranked or given a performance rating. Instead, the school is given a comprehensive report for consideration. The report details key findings and recommended improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. Principals are encouraged to share this information with their staff and school community to help shape the school’s strategic direction. Feedback from parents and the community is an important part of school reviews, with everyone encouraged to have their say. Our school will be having its four year review from 17 – 19 September in Wek 10 this term. To register your interest in participating in the review, please contact your school office or email the SIU at [email protected]. For more information about school reviews, please visit the School Reviews website at www.schoolreviews.eq.edu.au or contact the SIU on (07) 3035 2217 or at [email protected].
From our Deputy of Senior School Mr Josh Morris
NAPLAN SRT
As mentioned in my newsletter piece at the end of Term 2 our students will be
completing a trial NAPLAN test called a School Readiness Test or SRT. The SRT is
to test and fix any issues before the real NAPLAN testing which will be online in
2020. The SRT will involve our students completing a mock NAPLAN test using the
online platform with de-identified data. The main purpose of this test is to test out
our IT infrastructure to see what it is able to handle and make any adjustments
when necessary. This process also allows students to become familiar with the testing platform. I will
just repeat and confirm that student data will not be collected or used in anyway during these tests. It is
purely to practice on the platform and to test our systems. We look forward to NAPLAN Online 2020 as
we believe this will be a positive change for our students.
Donations of suits and dresses
We are calling for any donations of suits and dresses for our year 12 formal students. We are looking at
creating a bank of dresses and suits at school for attendees and their partners to choose from if they
find themselves in a position where they cannot organise their own. Please contact the school office on
07 41 565 777 if you are able to donate any items that may be of use and we can organise a time for
you to drop them off.

From our Acting Deputy Principal Primary School Mr Peter Jordan
School Opinion Survey
The annual School Opinion Survey is open from the 29th July to 23rd of August
2019. This survey is an opportunity for our students, parents and staff to have their
say on important aspects of the school. The anonymous data collected during the
survey will help us identify both areas of strength and areas for improvement,
which will in turn help inform the improvement journey of the school. Parent
surveys were sent home with students during Week 3 of the term and we’d like to
say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to contribute to the
survey so far. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. We would like to encourage everyone to have their
say, together we can keep making our great school even better!
Kindy 2020 Update
Planning and organisation for Kindy in 2020 are well underway within the Primary Sector of the school.
Our key Kindy staff members have been heavily involved in skills-based professional development and
curriculum development to ensure that we are ready to kick off our first year of Kindy. We are all very
excited to be able to offer this service within the Discovery Coast area. As the year progresses there will
be further changes within the Primary Precinct as our awesome facilities are further enhanced to inspire
our youngest learners. If you have Kindy aged children, or know of someone who does, we’d love to
hear from you. Let us know of your interest in the program by contacting us through the office or our
school Facebook page.
Road Safety Week
With Road Safety Week commencing on the 26th of August it is a timely reminder that we now have a
designated pedestrian crossing in the front of the school. As a part of the Gladstone Council upgrade to
the bus zone in the front of the school, there is now a pedestrian crossing located at the end of the bus
drop-off area near the cadet sheds. This is the safest area for students, parents, staff and visitors to
cross the bus zone during drop-off and pick-up times. We ask for your co-operation in encouraging
students to utilise this crossing during these peak traffic times to ensure their safety.
Put road safety first every day
During Queensland Road Safety Week from 26 to 30 August 2019, we're calling on you to put
road safety at the top of your list.
The theme for this year's Qld Road Safety Week is Road Safety F1rst. We're all getting busier
and often multi-task to get through the day – even when using the roads. It's especially
important to be road safe around our school by:
Following school zone speed limits
Obeying parking signage, especially in drop off and pick up zones
Never double parking
Obeying the directions of crossing supervisors at all times.
Why not take the opportunity to start a conversation with your family about what road safety
means to you and how you put road safety first.
Visit the StreetSmarts website for road safety resources and more information on Queensland
Road Safety Week.

From our Head of Senior School Mr Anthony Holt
QCS for Year 12 Students
Year 12 students will soon be sitting the final Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test!
The QCS Test consists of four test papers; a Writing Task test paper, a Short
Response test paper and two Multiple Choice test papers, completed over
Tuesday 3rd September and Wednesday 4th September.
While sitting the QCS Test is essential for students seeking an OP, other students
can benefit from sitting it too. A grade of C or above will ensure they meet literacy and numeracy
requirements for the Queensland Certificate of Education, while a grade of D or above may boost their
Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre selection rank. The QCS Test result will only be used to
moderate the ranks upwards
How can students prepare for the test? The best QCS Test preparation for students is studying their
school subjects. Students should have a sound knowledge of Year 10 Mathematics and a reasonable
level of vocabulary. It also a good idea to complete a few practice tests to know test procedures and
familiarise themselves with the test format. Students should make sure they get enough sleep
beforehand, stay hydrated and prepare the right materials to take into the exam. Good luck!
To be eligible to receive an OP, students must:
• complete 20 semester units of credit in Authority subjects
• study at least three subjects for four semesters each
• sit all four subtests of the QCS Test
• attend school until the final day of Year 12.
From our Head of Junior Secondary School Mr Warren Creighton
What a busy term we are having so far. Hard to believe that we are already at the
halfway mark. Over the last 5 weeks I have certainly got to know quite a lot of the
students in years 7-9. Unfortunately it can be difficult to chat with all parents and
caregivers. If you would like to chat with me please don’t hesitate to give me a call
at school or send me an email at [email protected].
One thing I have noticed over the last few weeks is ensuring each child arrives to class with all the
necessary resources for the lesson. This includes a charged laptop, pens, pencils, writing pad and any
other extras for individual classes. Please check with your child that they have a plentiful supply of
these consumables.
This week the students will bring home their assessment calendar, which will also be posted on our web
page. Help them to use this document and meet their assessment deadlines. Highlighting relevant
areas and sticking in a central spot around the home is a great reminder of upcoming assessment. If
you have any questions around their learning please call or email myself or their teachers directly.
Working with you, we can maximise their learning.

From our Head of Special Education Services Ms Trish Gibson
Our free book club is going well. Thank you to Sue Johnston who is now
running the bookshop. 20 to 30 books are being selected each week. We are
in need of appropriate magazines. If you have car, truck, 4x4, horse,
wellbeing, health etc magazines, that we can give away, please send to the
Hive.
This week the “Pop-Up” Op shop is being run by Robyn Kirby – clothes and
accessories – something for everyone. This runs every few weeks. We are happy for good recycled
clothes to be sent in as well.

In the Art Room….
We are kicking off this term with lots of exciting activities in the art room! The year 7s are completing a
Pop Art drawing of a superhero to transfer onto a canvas, which are all looking fabulous! The year 8s
are working on a large scale collaborative piece, based on contemporary indigenous artist Sally Morgan.
Our year 9s are carving lino to prepare for the printing of their architectural designs. The year 10s are
working through their photographs of up-close and abstract images. Our senior students are exploring a
range of mediums to create a 2D artwork. Some students have artworks ready to display in the
upcoming Golding Showcase Youth Exhibition. These are just a sample of some of the fantastic talent
we have here at Rosedale State School. As an art teacher I am proud of our students and all the effort
and enthusiasm they have towards their creations.
Year 11 Shayla Wheeler ‘Our Indigenous garden’ Year 7 Billy-James Donald ‘Super Hero’
If you are in Gladstone between the 23rd August and the 5th October be sure to pop into the Art Gallery

BOOK FAIR IS COMING!!! We will be celebrating books and reading with our
annual Book Fair. Sharing a love for books and reading together with your children
for at least 10 minutes a day not only lights up their world but, it is also a critically
important factor in a child’s learning and literacy development.
To celebrate books and reading we are holding our annual Book Fair from Monday
(lunch only) 19th of August to Friday 23rd of August, before school 8:30 – 8:45 and
both lunches each day 11:30– 12:00 & 1:15-1:45. Books and stationary items will
be on display in the Library for students to look at and purchase. The Book Fair
theme this year is “DinoMite – Stomp, Chomp & Read”.
There will be a ‘colouring competition’, ‘guess how many’, and ‘a dress up day’. All competitions are
free to enter. ‘Colouring Ins’ will be handed out to students prior to Book Fair and will need to be
returned to Ms Grills at the beginning of Book Fair so that they can be displayed in the Library
throughout the week. Primary students are invited to come dressed in theme on Friday 23rd of August.
Students are encouraged to be inventive and creative when making their costumes by using household
items from home. Some ideas are - dinosaurs, giants, trolls, archaeologist, dino bones, park ranger,
stone age people, The Flintstones, Ice Age movie characters, The Land Before Time characters,
Barney and Friends TV show and where ever your imagination may take you in the world of DinoMite.
Come visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits. Sales from the Book
Fair contribute towards new books for our Library and our Students. Please note the brochure that will
be sent home soon only shows some of the books available for purchase.
