Message from the Principal Let's try this again...

Welcome back, Cardinals!

After the long holiday break and the unexpected snow days so early in the year, I feel anxious to get back to school and get moving towards our 2018 goals. I hope you are all eager to return and focus on the learning goals we've set for you all!

As I mentioned to you in my last two newsletters, we have a renewed focus for 2018. Our plan is to focus on the seven qualities of highly effective schools, and you'll hear us reference these throughout 2018. The first of these is strong instructional leadership. This is something that I have made a priority in our school and all our teachers know how critical it is to highlight this in their classrooms each day. During our staff development last Tuesday, we discussed our goals for the year and the steps we plan to take to ensure that all students are successful. One of theses key steps will focus on using our RTI time each day to reteach standards that haven't yet been mastered as well as enrich students who need richer, deeper instruction. We will also begin to monitor data more closely and the students will be involved in this process as they begin to create their own individualized learning plans. We've got really high expectations for our students this year and we're going to challenge them in new ways to reach their goals!

Please continue to volunteer your time when you are able to do so. We always need help in the cafeteria and during carpool; these are great ways to interact with students in positive and meaningful ways. Volunteer opportunities can be found in this newsletter as well as on our website.

We have a really busy week. Monday night, the PTC will meet in the cafeteria at 7:00. There are home basketball games on Tuesday beginning at 4:15. The Science Fair is Wednesday from 4-6:30 and there will be a board meeting at 5:30. Thursday night, there is a band concert in the cafeteria as well as home basketball games. Friday night, we have two more home basketball games. There is an information session scheduled for Saturday morning at 10:00 for any prospective families who would like to enroll for the 2018-2019 school year. These are all opportunities for you to get involved in the school. If you'd like to help, please let us know.

Let's have a great YEAR of school!

Reading Lists Parents:

Ms. McElreath, reading specialist, put together some reading lists for you to help encourage your students to keep reading in the new year. The 8th grade one has a selection of books on it that will give advanced readers a jump start on their HS/AP reading lists, but all the lists have a good mix of book selections.

Questions? Email Alissa McElreath at [email protected].

Prospective Family Information Sessions Upcoming Events:

Information Sessions: January 13th, January 16th

Open Enrollment: December 1st - February 1st

Lottery Date: Mid to late February

Dr. Jailall (Dr. J) went on a trip with a team of other people to distribute bag packs to children in different parts of North India (Bihar, Silliguri, Lucknow and Sikkim), and in Nepal. This was a heart wrenching trip that everyone should take if they can (yes, it was expensive!), if only to put things in perspective and make you more grateful and humble. (And Dr. J did see the Himalayas from afar!) School assembly under a tree in Siliguri: Their biggest issue, seriously, was defending the children from wild elephants that would come invade their school and village during the night. Dr. J would love it if CCA could do a service project with these villages just like CCA did with Haiti a few years ago. If you have an idea for a project, please contact Dr. J to see how you and CCA can make it happen.

January 7, 2018

Dear K-5 Parents,

The New Year is a great time to talk with your kids about healthy habits. Consider making family resolutions such as eating dinner together, eating healthy foods first, trying new veggies/fruits or going on family bike rides and walks without electronics.

Help us fill the “I SPY SOMETHING HEALTHY…” wall by asking your child to bring in a symbol of something healthy. This can be a magazine cutout, a computer printout, or even an actual object (if it is small and relatively flat enough to attach to a bulletin board). Please don’t send any perishable items.

Stay tuned for pictures of our progress!

Please send items in a bag or envelope and label them with ‘School Nurse’.

Healthy, happy kids learn best! Thank you and Happy New Year!! Nurse Huels [email protected]

Basketball Game Attendance

Middle school students may stay after school on days that we have home games to watch the game without parental attendance.

When they stay, they must stay in homeroom until the an-nouncement is made that dismissal is over and they can then go immediately to the gym.

If students are not picked up by the time the game is over, then there is a $1/minute/child charge.

It's Photo Time!!

Help save Ms. Mecklenburg's life! The Yearbook students are desperate for something to do!

Please email your photos from events (fun run, color run, harvest festival, City BBQ spirit night, Blaze Pizza spirit night, first grade field trip, character land parade, Didgeridoo Down Under, first day of school pics, dress down days, Wake County Animal Treats, candy round-up for the USO, etc.), sports (soccer games, basketball games, cross country meets, middle school houses kickball games, first vs. second recess soccer game), or the classrooms (in-house field trips, door decorating, art classes, holiday parties, etc.) to Ms. Meck before the students force her to listen to Brittany Spears again! (This cry for help is real!)

Please include the name of the event or the classroom teacher!

As always, a million thanks! We couldn't do Yearbook without you!
