Last year’s work by the Steering Committee (on implementing the Flanagan Report) came to fruition with a joint meeting of all the boards which represent the membership at the Sacramento Fine Art Center. The first priority of the Steering Committee was to review and respond to Priority 5, adopted by a prior joint board meeting, aimed at organizational clarity. To this end, we adopted the following branding statement: We are a coalition of visual artists of all levels and media forming a vibrant, active, nurturing community.

In addition, we adopted a new tag line: ART HAPPENS HERE. This historic statement of coalition between the clubs at the Art Center is a first step toward a new marketing plan, a new website and new logo. The Steering Committee will continue to work toward these goals going forward.

Special thanks to Patty Larsen, Mikki Bako-Sorensen, Stephanie Lynch and Jo Kopp for their hard work on the Steering Committee.

Celebrating DavidThank you so much to those of you who joined us to celebrate David Peterson on January 12. Over the years, David has put a lot of time and effort into our center. All of his contributions have been greatly appreciated by our center's artists, volunteers, and staff. We look forward to having him continue to be a part of our shows and events in the future.

Once again, we are entering an unknown territory! Last time we had this show, it was called “What! You call that Art?” and it was a fun multimedia, mixed media show giving our artists a chance to show off their welding, gluing and 3D skills. Who can forget Skip Lee’s use of Barbies? Get going now for an entry into this show, held June/July 2019. Raid the local Goodwill for constructive material! Go to the garage and see what you can find! Our judge will be Roberta Russos, who says about her work:

“I work intuitively, rarely starting with more than a general vision, but intuition can only point the way. We must be willing to put in the effort; we must choose to follow the path and then igure out why we were compelled to go

there.”

Her work has included a man in the moon constructed partly of a coffee maker basket and old shoe trees, a square sculpture made of Remington typewriter parts, and other very special visions. Roberta is an award-winning artist who has shown nationally.

Upcoming Found Art Show

Some Notes About Sheila’s Studio Sisters

First, credit must be given to Herman Jacobs who wanted to make his artist wife happy and so built her a studio out in his back yard. Next we have to thank his wife Sheila who generously invites her artist friends to come over nearly every week and paint with her.

Over the years there have been quite a large number of artists who have met at Sheila’s studio and created art with her. Artists have come and then moved on and other artists then fill

their spaces. So at this time we have about 10 artists of whom 7 are actively meeting at least twice a month to paint together. Usually we are each working on an individual piece, however several times over the years, one or another of us has found opportunities to exhibit our work as a group in outside locations. Many of us are members of Sacramento Fine Art Center and often exhibit there.

We not only create art when together, we also share our paints, brushes and knowledge. But, best of all, we provide a fresh viewpoint: the priceless gift of Critique. These get-togethers are each treated as a special occasion and food, drink, music, dancing and exuberance play important parts. Our opportunity

to work together means we play together and we enjoy every moment of this!

We are Sheila Jacobs, Jackie Keller, Gail Perris, Annie Beegan, Patti Waggoner, Paula Lloyd, Marie Dixon, Maliheh Bartolomeo, Kathy Daigle and Diana Holt

Gallery RentalsArtists are always looking for places to show and sell their work, but look no further than the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. Gallery space rental is one of the many perks of being a member here. Members can rent the Foyer for just $150 a month! Need more space? Consider renting Gallery 3 for $250 a month. You can display your own work or split the space and cost of rent with a fellow artist. We are now renting space in 2020. Contact Angelia in the office for details.

Updates to the FacilitiesDid you see the restroom? Choice of palette, paint purchase, and paint application by Joyce Wilson and Cindy Farmer. The walls look great, the furniture looks great! Kudos! Well done and thank you!

Other “accomplished” as promised: paint, paint, and more paint: Gallery 3 north wall, studio walls, studio fire exit hallway, and studio cabinets. Thank you to Peggy Colombo, John Nichols, Vickie Stenken, Mikki Sorenson, Nakie Workman, and Steve Berg. Also thank you to Mikki Bako Sorensen and Mary Hargrave for cash donations to help make all this possible.

And yet more thanks! To John Nichols and Steve Berg for the removal of the stage curtains giving us a cleaner, more up-dated look. (Does anyone want the blue fabric? Let Angelia know.)

Check out the new coat hooks and new display for member’s business cards. (Unfortunately, we can no longer accommodate any cards larger than business size.)

Class and workshop information is now located over the studio cabinets as are the instructor’s artworks. Works by WASH and NCA “Artists of the Month” are more prominently displayed over the refreshments tables.

To come: more paint! Gallery 1 cabinets and the fire exit hallway off Gallery 1.

As always, thank you to our wonderful office staff, Angelia and Cheri, for their help in many ways both large and small.

—Facilities Committee

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Fire Exits require a FOUR FOOT exit pathway from the studio/gallery to the exit door. Please be sure to keep that area free from storage carts, framed artwork, boxes, easels, trash cans, etc.

I love Open Culture website for the breadth of cultural information that is archived there for free!  I must admit

the first time I went there it was to see an old Spike Jones musical number and I don’t remember exactly why I did that.  But just last week, they listed a source for 1.8 million art images curated from museums around the world.  Find it here for inspiration!  openculture.com Tuned Out by Mary Deziree

You know that we are a gallery and we are a space for classes, workshops and receptions. You know that we are a gift shop and a place where people meet to make, see, share and learn about art. You may even know that we host international art exhibitions every year.

But did you know that as a Center, we lease this 7,000+ square foot space from the Carmichael Department of Parks and Recreation? In fact, this past year, our President, Mary Hargrave, and former President, Richard Turner, negotiated and signed another 5-year lease. So, we have a home for our artists, staff, volunteers and teachers for the next 5 years.

But our home was looking a little worse for wear, so the indomitable Barbara Marshall, Chair of our Facilities Committee, wrangled some volunteers and over the holidays her team was able to make some significant improvements in its appearance.

While at 5’2”, Barbara is short in stature, she is long on energy and commitment. As one of her helpers, I watched Barbara walking around carrying her bible, the ADA report completed for the Center last year, so that as we made changes we could also bring our home into greater compliance with the law and make it more accommodating for our members and visitors.

Barbara was there in the morning when the first helpers arrived and stayed until the last helpers left—or even later. Each night after the helpers finished for the day, Barbara took home the paint

brushes to wash them. While she had a number of people who volunteered part of their holiday time to help out, Barbara was there, even if she was the only one.

As usually happens, once we got one wall cleaned and painted, the one next to it looked even worse. So, as we moved through the studio cleaning and painting, we really noticed how awful the back built-in cupboard looked. We did not have the time or energy to tackle it, but it stuck out like a beat-up dirty thumb. Thanks to donations from two members, we were able to hire Ramon Perez, a handyman, to remove the doors and drawers, then sand and paint everything. It looks so much better now.

While the helpers who put in so much work enjoyed the camaraderie of working on the project, make no mistake—it was hard, hard work.

Aside from sprucing up the place, our Center gets a lot of wear and tear on a daily basis. Art classes, workshops, receptions and meetings all contribute to a regular flux of people using our space. Some are quite careful with our space; others not so much.

Angelia Gordon, our Administrative Coordinator, monitors the janitorial work and also ensures that there are appropriate supplies in the bathroom and kitchen. But this is only one small part of her job, so it is up to everyone who uses the Center to help take care of it.

And people do. When a meeting or reception ends, members like a hive of busy bees begin folding tables and making stacks of 7 chairs all over the room. Someone mans the chair lift. Someone else pulls out the carts to stack the tables on. Someone else heads to the janitor’s closet to get the broom. Others are picking up trash, or clearing the food, and then cleaning up the kitchen.

Teachers ensure that plastic sheets are placed on the tables that are used by their students. I’ve heard Victoria Brooks remind her students to wipe the easels clean of any paint they may have gotten on them. At the end of classes, tables and chairs are folded and stacked and put away.

We are lucky to have such a great physical space within which to teach, paint, view art, and hang out to do art. A heartfelt Thank You from the Board to all of you who help to keep it that way.

A hearty thanks to everyone who has taken the time to “like” us on Facebook—we recently made it to 500 LIKES, a real feat! To show our appreciation, we’re stepping up our game: posting tons of great pictures, listing relevant events, and keeping

you up-to-date on all the goings-on here at SFAC. We’re excited to announce that we’ve now joined Instagram and Twitter, so there’s even more opportunities to reach out to our wonderful membership and surrounding communities!

As a matter of fact, we’re already reaping significant benefits from our new online presence: the Friday Morning Figure Group has seen a jump in attendance over the last couple weeks, some of our classes are selling out in record time, and dozens

of people turned up (in the rain!) for our Aspiring Artists Debut Reception on 2nd Saturday. It is so exciting to see new faces around the center, and inspire folks who had previously been unfamiliar to come in and check us out! Please feel free to “check in” at SFAC online, comment with your thoughts or encouragements on our posts featuring artists’ work, and share our exciting classes and events! Let’s keep this ball rolling!

This year’s Big Day of Giving will be Tuesday May 2, 2019! Every year you have the ability to “give your money where your art is” and support the mission of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center and its collaborative partners, WASH and NCA. The Board of Directors has established the following needs for this year’s campaign:

Our highest priority for additional funding is to make it possible to hire a full-time Executive Director. Funding need: $60,000

Our studio and Galleries are located in an old San Juan School District building which is very much in need of updating. Heat and air conditioning for the gift shop, office and kitchen area are needed as well as lighting for the two largest galleries. Our stage area is currently in need of safety upgrades. Funding need: $15,000

While most of our shows are self-supporting, we are reaching out to other communities to diversify our art

offerings. Support and underwriting for shows such as art by the women of St John’s Shelter, collaborative efforts with the Sacramento Poetry Society, paintings by Portuguese-American artists, and visual art inspired by stories by individuals living with mental illness are needed. Funding need: $5,000

The Board of Directors of the three art organizations at SFAC have been meeting in a joint planning effort aimed at increasing the visibility of Sacramento Fine Art Center in order to

attract more members and buyers of art to the facility. An urgent need for upgrading all social media platforms has been identified as well as a need for a new website. Funding need: $10,000.

Your Art Center is always a supportive and creative place to be with friends and colleagues who help you to grow as an artist. Our mission is always under construction! Please join us in moving toward a successful Big Day of Giving and support Mr. Big Dog!

Donate to the Art Center!Thinking about Spring Cleaning? Wondering what to do with art books that you no longer need or have space for? Consider donating them to the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. Over the past five years, the sale of donated art books has provided a steady revenue stream for supporting Center programs. Annual book sales have ranged from $250 in the first year to over $850 in other years. Recently we have discovered a means to increase that sum by selling more valuable books on Amazon or Ebay. Jerry Jaggers, one of our new Board members, suggested that we conduct an experiment to see if this would be a worthwhile venture and he volunteered to manage the process. The experiment has proven to be very rewarding in a relatively short time. The sale of the first nine books (after taxes and vendor commissions) brought in $496!

So—take a look at your shelves and see if you have art books you no longer need and bring them to the Center. Barbara Little, our volunteer who oversees the book sales area, prices every book received and identifies those that appear to be more valuable than we are likely to sell from our book carts. Those books will be passed on to Jerry for posting on other resale sites. All funds received go directly to support the Center’s activities. It’s a great way to lend a helping hand and to find a new home for your art books.

And—it has to be said—we are so fortunate to have volunteers like Jerry and Barbara who are willing to give their time to make these sales possible. Thank you, Jerry and Barbara!

THOUGHTS ON OUR WASH COMMUNITYWASH is designed to promote watercolor in a number of ways - classes, demos, exhibits, scholarships, etc. But to me, one of the most important is being part of a community of watercolor artists. I'll tell you why.

A community is based on what the people share in common (from Latin communis, "common, public, general, shared by all or many").

But a community is more than common interest, it is a group living, breathing people who gather around what they have in common. I contend that it is people interacting with people that enriches and stimulates us in our watercolor, more even than a monthly artist demonstration or exhibit.

I joined WASH in 2013 because I wanted to provide regular stimulus to my fledgling interest in watercolor, so I would keep improving. I found the amazing watercolor artists in WASH extremely encouraging.

For example, in 2015, Rebecca Jaggers had won a Painting of the Month for "Goodnight, My Lovelies," a wonderful, loose rendering of camellias. I screwed up the courage to take her aside. "Would you take a couple of minutes to explain just how you painted this?" And she did!

Then I met a couple of guys to go plein air painting together with. That was fun. I always wanted to set up my easel near Tim Sloan because he had such a good eye for composition.

One day these guys and I went to Cool, where master watercolorist Steve Walters lives, and took him to lunch. Just rubbing shoulders with him was inspiring!

I want to encourage you to venture out just a bit from your comfort zone and get acquainted with somebody at WASH from who you can learn. Take advantage of being part of a very special community of watercolor artists, and you'll find yourself stretching and getting better at your art - and enjoying one another.

UPCOMING DEMONSTRATIONSFor the 1:30 pm March 11 meeting WASH is delighted to have Jerianne Van Dijk demonstrate for our members!

Jerianne works mostly in watercolor with some gouache, ink and crayon, with attention to mood and light. Her painting style is realistic and somewhat impressionistic. When it comes to illustration, her use of mediums entail a grand variety of techniques and materials, ranging

from whimsical to detailed and classic.

Residing in the Northern California foothills for the past 30 years, her work is often born of the unique charm and inspiration from her elevated environment in the Sierra Foothills.

The 7:00 pm April 8 meeting will feature Michael J. Mikolon. Michael was born and raised in Detroit.  Michael earned a BFA at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. His love of nature and the great outdoors led him to northern California where he works as an artist and art teacher. Michael paints primarily landscapes and figures, as well as very creative and humorous illustrations and comics. Michael works in watercolor, oil and also digital media. PAINTING OF THE MONTH

The January POM is Floral Bouquet, a fine example of Yupo. Now some of us regard Yupo as untamed wilderness, but it is obvious that Marlene Turner has mastered this unruly medium.

SUMMARY OF NOVEMBER 12, 2018 INTERACTIVE SESSIONThe members of the Board would like to thank all the participants of the November 12 meeting for the variety and quality of their suggestions during the interactive session. We asked you to tell us what types of workshops and demonstrations you would like and who you would like to have as demonstrators and workshop presenters. You came up with 31 suggestions for types of presentations ranging from experimentation with a variety of media to on-going weekly classes of a variety of types. Topics included portrait techniques, abstractions, cityscape, plein air, perspective, figurative, and different techniques for manipulating watercolor.

You also encouraged the Board to continue with linking meeting demonstrations with workshops to allow more members to get a feeling of what the workshop was about. We also liked that you are asking for things other than painting, such as selection of paper, framing, color theory, and art history.

The members of the program committee were especially pleased to get a list of 20 artists that you have recommended as presenters at future meetings.

As to the question about changing the meeting dates it seems that our members are extremely flexible and willing to change if doing so would make it easier for the Sacramento Fine Arts Center staff.

Thanks again for the excellent suggestions. We got so many ideas to work with for the future. We are also going to pass the suggestions on to the Board of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center in that many of the suggestions would assist them in their work as well.

NCA New Member's Tea

Wednesday, April 3, 2019 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Welcome new NCA members! We have our annual "Welcome to Northern CA Arts Tea & Critique" coming up on April 3rd at one of our Board members' homes: 8734 Pathfind-er Court Orangevale 95662.

Please feel free to bring one completed or "in progress" art work for a critique by one of our NCA Master artists!

It's a fun way to get to know some of your fellow artists.

If you plan on attending, we'd prefer (if pos-sible) an RSVP at (916)488-5840 (leave a message) for a head count. See you there.

A Message from the President:

Spring is in the air! I don’t know about you, but I’m defi-

nitely glad the wind and rain is on it’s way out and longer

days are coming… I have ART to do! I’m sure you plein air

artists know what I mean? With all the nasty weather

we’ve been having, I was forced to take a break from gun-

powder art and get my spring cleaning out of the

way. Now, while the rest of the world is doing their

spring cleaning, I’ll be outside working on some new se-

ries! What will you be working on? Send us an email and

tell us about it (don’t forget the pics)! You may even see

it in our next newsletter or on our website!

Enjoying Our Meetings!

Liz Hendrix’ painting, “The Helper,” won second prize at

the UCDF art contest.

Bente Tarantola receives her Award of Excellence

from Joan McMurray for her painting, “Woman Gar-

dening, “ in the Aspiring Artists Show

and bring a snack, one of your artworks for the

monthly contest, and maybe some money for the

raffle (always great prizes!). The raffle supports

the Aspiring Artist Debut fund.

monthly meetings. There is always something new

to see and learn!

A Message

from Your

Editor

It’s Spring and Green is everywhere! It’s a time

for new growth in our work and in ourselves!

I’m looking at the challenge of putting more

spirit and meaning into my work. A friend once

asked me what I was doing for my “bliss.” I took

that to mean “How am I expressing/finding joy

in my life?” A major way I find and express my

joy in living is through my creative expressions. I

find joy expressing myself, playing with color,

and sharing my ideas and creations with others.

My litmus test for my art is: if it doesn’t bring

me joy, I’m not interested in doing it! Maybe

Spring is a good time for you, too, to look at

your work...does it make you happy? What as-

pects of working on creative projects gives you

the most pleasure? How can your art bring

even more joy into your life?

February’s winner

Chris Knopp won with his watercolor,

“Enchanted Forest,” at the monthly meeting.

NCA Scrapbook for January and February

January’s NCA meeting featured Marilynn Fairchild,

presenting a mini workshop about how she took

her art from her studio to a gallery in Carmel, and

helping us make the same journey. Below, these

amazing jellyfish are an example of her work.

At the February Meeting, Robert Dvorak

gave a lecture that helped us understand

“The Art of Selling Art.” (below, “Iris “)

Member Liz Hendrix Scores Again!

Liz Hendrix’s painting of Sacramento’s capitol building

won her the first Featured Artist status of 2019 at the

January NCA meeting!

ASPIRING ARTIST DEBUT - Many, many thanks to

all the NCA members who helped with the Aspiring

artists into the computer, and those who helped

with receiving: Barbara Marshall, Bobbie Lou Hunt,

Paul Desseau, Joan Hall; those who helped with

judging: Paul Desseau, Sandra Torguson, Phyllis

Brady; and those who helped hang the show: Mary

Wang-Steele, Sandie Allie, Paul Desseau, and San-

dra Torguson; Second Saturday reception, Stepha-

nie Lindsay. It was so inspiring to see the excite-

ment of the Aspiring Artists who brought in their

work to enter for the first time. Now they have the

courage to enter another art show. THANK YOU

SO MUCH, JOAN MCMURRAY, acting chair

A Big Thanks!

Dvorak’s lecture became a mini class with

brain-storming, role-playing, and a pack-

et of worksheets for the audience to take

home to continue their exploration of

new techniques for putting art into the

hands of others by over-coming inner

obstacles and learning methods to sell

more art.

Welcome!

Welcome Phyllis Brady as Co-Vice President in

charge of programs. She brings long experience

as a board member of the California Watercolor

Association to our NCA board. We are excited to

have her!
