2.5 Model Station (Platform Design)

2.5.1 Platform DesignThe platform width is to be a 3metres with the minimum width of 2metres where obstructions exist. Platform surfaces must be slip resistant and have a cross fall away from the track edge (no greater than 1:40) to prevent surface water ponding and reduce the risk of objects rolling on to the track. At the ends of platforms appropriate signage must warn passengers not to venture on to the track. Where it is anticipated non-stopping trains will pass through the station a yellow line 1metre away from the platform edge is to be painted and station announcements made to inform passengers of the pending train.

Platform paving/fi nishesPlatforms edges are to have a 800mm tactile strip located 500mm back from the platform edge.

2.5.2 Platform plantingPlatform planting is to be encouraged where appropriate. Planting schedules should provide year round colour and variety and also require low maintenance.

2.5.3 Platform Furniture – see also ComponentsThe following furniture is required on all platforms, seating, passenger shelters, litter bins, station help points, fi re cabinet, smoking area with bin and travel information posters.

2.5.4 Platform Train Interface (PTI)All platforms where the platform edge is not level with the train carriage fl oor are to be provided with a mobile ramp unit, which will be operated by the station staff.

2. Model Station - Objectives & Planning2.3.8 Stair DesignStairs are to be designed in accordance with the Irish National Disability Authority Handbook (NDAH).

Stair DimensionsPreferred dimensions for risers and going are 150mm and 300 respectively – these values are to be used subject to tolerance for the rising to suit the site conditions and levels. Nosing profiles should be avoided and open treads are not to be used. Single stair flights are to have a maximum of 10 risers with a landing length of at least the width of the stair. Note that it is only permissible to have two flights in a single direction so that a typical stair rising in excess of 3m will require a change in direction. Staircase widths within passenger areas are to be a minimum of 2 metres wide. If stair widths are in excess of 2.4 metres wide a central handrail is to be provided.

HandrailsHandrails are to be located on both sides of the stair and are to be positioned between 840 and 900mm above the stair pitch line. Handrails are to extend a minimum of 300mm beyond the top and bottom riser. Handrail profiles are to be 45/50mm diameter and located 45mm away from wall surfaces. The ends of the handrails are to be returned in towards wall surfaces to avoid coat sleeve etc becoming hooked. A lower second handrail is to be provided at 700mm above the pitch line where appropriate. A single handrail at landing levels is to be provided at 1000mm above floor level.

BalustradingThe widest permissible gap in any stair or landing balustrading should not permit a sphere of 100mm diameter to pass through. A continuous upstand of at least 75mm is to be provided at all landing levels.

Tactile strips to External StairsAn 800mm tactile strip is to be provided at the bottom and top of each staircase this should be located 400mm away from the bottom and top riser respectively.
