The BBC is to show previously unseen CCTV footage of the hours leading

up to the murder of honeymooner Anni Dewani in Cape Town in 2010.

The hour-long Panorama show, “The Honeymoon Murder”, will be aired on

29 March and promises “exclusive access to CCTV footage never before

seen publicly.”

In its blurb the BBC show asks, “Did the wealthy businessman engage a

taxi driver to arrange his wife’s death, or is he wrongly accused?” and

promises to show a “different side to the couple than has so far been

portrayed.”

However, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has

expressed concern over the documentary. The NPA’s Mthunzi Mhaga told

News24, ”We are obviously concerned because the matter is pending

before court and therefore sub judice.

“The documentary will amount to trial by media.”

Mhaga said the NPA doesn’t know what footage the BBC programme has

or even how they got it.

Shrien Dewani faces charges of murder , conspiracy to commit murder,

robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration

of justice.

Last week the British High court in London heard arguments regarding the

honeymoon murder accused’s appeal against his extradition.

In November 2010 his wife, Anni Dewani, 28, was fatally shot after the taxi

she and her husband hired was allegedly hijacked in Gugulethu.

Shrien said he was kicked out of the car when the hijackers drove off with

his wife. Her body was later found in the hijacked car, parked on a

pavement in Illitha Park, Khayelitsha.

The taxi driver, Zola Robert Tongo, later admitted guilt on a charge of 

murder, but told the police that Shrien Dewani had offered him R15 000 to

 An extradition order was signed against Dewani by British Home Secretary

Theresa May in September last year. He has since appealed to the British

High Court, and SA’s prosecuting authorities are waiting for a definitive

outcome before they can add his name to the charge sheet.

‘Panorama: The Honeymoon Murder’ will be shown on Thursday 29 March
