A “lifeline” for a child with blood cancer

Dear Beach Rotarians,

So, first quarter of this Rotary Year is completed. Looking back, we haven’t done

badly. But, we ought to improve by excelling in all avenues of service.

I think we all were impressed and inspired by the talk on TRF by Rtn MPHF Dr.

George Sunderaraj on 30th September at Taj Gateway Hotel. It is my request to you all to

think seriously and positively about contributing to TRF fund in whatever way you can;

quantity doesn’t matter.

Next month District Governor is visiting our club (on 7th October). On that

occasion we will be honoring two individuals with ‘Vocational Service Excellence

Awards’, one a staff nurse in Government sector, with 20 years of blemish-less record in

patient care and the other, a police constable with 17 years of non-corrupt service and

extreme social commitment.

You might have noticed the rise in socially deviant behaviour like theft, robbery,

destruction of public property, alcohol, drug abuse and violence among adolescents,

especially in Calicut city. It is our responsibility to prevent, detect, correct, evaluate and

rehabilitate these young offenders who are part of the future of our Nation. Our club

along with other Rotary clubs of Calicut city will be collaborating with ORC (Our

Responsibility to Children), a Non Governmental initiative formed to address the above

said issue.

Expecting your whole hearted effort, support and cooperation in building

communities and bridging continents,

Yours in Rotary,

Rtn. Dr. K.V.Prabhakaran

Secretary’s Report

We had a handful of good and touching projects. On 02.09.10 we had a regular meeting. The e-magazine of Rotary Beach “Baywatch” was released on this day by the PDG by handing over a copy to the President. The meeting congratulated the services rendered by Rtn. Dinker Karunakar and Rtn.E.K. Radhakrishnan as the Editor and Asst Editor.

The Meeting on 09.09.10 was a speaker meeting. Mr. Sumith, our GSE candidate was the speaker. On this day we handed over the cheque for Rs.25000/- to the Anudev Chikilsa Sahaya Committee. Adv. E. Subash accepted the cheque on behalf of the committee and while addressing the meeting he expressed the gratitude of the committee to the club. The meeting appreciated Rtn. Praveen for the first donation given by him for the noble cause and the initiation done by Rtn. Adv. Srinath Girish also was specially mentioned at the meeting.

The regular meeting on 16.09.10 was cancelled due to the reception arranged by Rtn. T. Raghavan in connection with the marriage of his daughter. Most of our members and families attended the reception on 18.09.10. We gave a gift to the couple and wished them all the best for their future.

On 23.09.10 we had a Club assembly. The club directors presented their reports and future plans. Our AG Rtn. Bipin Kumar Pariekh gave us necessary directions with regard to the plans of the club. The schedule for Governor’s visit was seriously discussed.

On30.09.10, we hosted a regional event. It was a speaker meeting. Rtn. MPHF George Sundararaj was the speaker. The presidents and secretaries of our sister clubs participated in the meeting. 22 members of our club were also present for the meeting. The speaker spoke on “Rotary Foundation.” We could gather a lot of information about the schemes and plans of the Rotary movement. The meeting was well attended and meaningful.

The projects of the month were mainly in the fields of Club Service and Community service. Both are essential avenues of services as per RI Priorities.

Rtn. Adv. V.P. Radhakrishnan, Secretary, Rotary Calicut Beach.

ROTARY INFORMATION

Two students who met at a district Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) event used their friendship and talents to help travelers stranded by the volcanic eruption in Iceland in April.   Måns Gårdfeldt and Jonas Larsson became friends at the District 2340 (Sweden) RYLA in 2008. After ash from the volcano grounded more than 100,000 flights and disrupted travel for millions of passengers, the two alumni collaborated to create a website that offered volcano‐related news, car shares, and housing.   "The biggest problem seemed to be the lack of organization from airlines, governments, and transportation companies," says Gårdfeldt, explaining that he and Larsson were moved by stories of distraught travelers. "People were paying extremely expensive taxi trips, and some had no way to get home at all."   The website featured discussion threads for people looking to share rides to destinations across Europe, with ride offers at a variety of prices, says Gårdfeldt.   Word spread quickly. Their website drew 1,500 visitors an hour the first day. After five days, the site registered more than 40,000 visitors and received about 170,000 page views, according to Larsson, a computer programming student.   "We knew it could be something very big if we did it right," says Larsson. "We used Facebook and Twitter to market the website. It was an overnight success."   Their site was mentioned in several newspapers and received radio and TV exposure.   "We had reporters call at every hour of the night, which of course was thrilling," says Gårdfeldt. "It felt really good to succeed and see people use our site."   "Knowing that there were thousands of desperate people out there needing help, it was a wonderful feeling to see them come to our website," says Larsson. "Seeing the connections made by visitors fueled Måns and me to work day in and day out that week."   Because site visitors mainly posted their e‐mail or telephone numbers to connect, Gårdfeldt and Larsson don't know exactly how many people they helped, Gårdfeldt says. However, they received confirmation from several people that the site helped them get home.   "We had about 1,000 posts, so we know there were a lot of people who came to the site and organized their travels together," Gårdfeldt says.   Rotarians in their district also noticed their success and brought the two RYLArians to Montréal, Québec, Canada, to share their story with participants at the 2010 International RYLA in June.   Source : Rotary International News / Courtesy : eFlash_Rotary

MIRTH

A climber fell off a cliff. As he stumbled down into the huge canyon, he caught hold of a branch of a small tree. “Help,” he shouted.

A deep majestic voice from the sky echoed through the canyon. “I will help you my son. But first you must have faith and trust me.”

“All right, all right, I trust you,” answered the man. The voice replied, “Then let go of the branch.”

There was a long pause and the man shouted again, “Is there anyone else up there?”

A man approaches the Gate of Heaven and asks to be let in.

“Tell me one good thing you did in your life,” St. Peters says to him.

“Well,” replies the man, “I saw a group of punks harassing an elderly woman, so I kicked their leader in the shins”

“When did this happen?”

‘About 40 seconds ago!”

Editor September was a slow month for some reason. Even this bulletin is a little behind time. It was one thing or the other. Yours truly, like everyone else is prone to procrastination. But here it is, Beach boys, better late than never. There‘s a thing or two we Indians have to learn about timing. Look at the mess during the run-up to the just concluded CWG. We can never pace out or plan our jobs and get it done on time. Most of our functioning is like the act of love-making….we take it too nice and easy in the beginning and gear up to a hectic pace towards the end. Well, we can’t be making love all the time, so now on, every effort will be made to bring out the future issues on time, barring force majeure. Contributions from anyone are still awaited. You don’t have to wait to the end of the month. Send it in as soon as you have anything. It will help in our mission to bring out this mag on time. OK, gotta stop now and send all this to our wiz-kid Radha to compile this into a presentable ‘Baywatch’. Dinky Celebration on 25000 volunteers trained by Trauma Care Society The Trauma care society (TRACK) initiated by Rotary Club of Calicut Beach in 1998 with other service organizations, City Police & IMA has completed training 25000 volunteers. Various programs including a seminar and honoring some of the outstanding volunteers are planned on the occasion. DGP Sri. Jacob Punnose has agreed to inaugurate the celebrations on 19th November at Town hall. Our PDG Darius Marshall is the President of the society now. Also we mention the President was very kind to donate a LCD projector through The Parsi Anjuman Society. Sub Editor
