Costs listed are breaking the ground, tolling the bell, the service, making the grave, burial in lead, permission for a walled grave, and laying a new stone. Ledgerstone inscriptions book. 'Inscriptions on the Flat Gravestones in the Bath Abbey Church copied by Charles P Russell (Parish Clerk) at the time of the restoration of the church in 1872'. Bound volume recording transcriptions of flat gravestones made during the Kemble/Scott restoration of the Abbey before the memorials were covered over by the installation of the pews. Each grave is linked by a number to a plan made at the same time (see BA/2/BMD/6/1/3). A note near the beginning of the volume by Charles Russell's son gives some information about the compilation of the volume: 'The following copy of Inscriptions was unfinished at the time of my Father's death in February 1887.../The index plan which accompanies this book shows the present position of all the Grave-Stones. 'R' denotes 'The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Salisbury and the Abbey Church of Bath', Rawlinson, 1719./ A small accompanying book contains an Index to all the Wall Monuments in the Church in 1876./A Short accompanying manuscript contains particulars of some other Inscriptions existing in 1676.' A second bookplate, signed by Gerald Deacon and dated November 1952, notes that the book originally contained newspaper cuttings collected by Mr Basey, which were removed by Gerald Deacon and added to his scrapbooks, 'The Book of Bath Abbey'. (See BA-PER/8/10.) Letter from Victor Hancart, Commune de Schaerbeek [Brussels], 14 October 1853, describing the circumstances of the death of Mary Jane Floyd (nee Mary Jane Caress) in Schaerbeek, and the design of her coffin, French. With a note, signature missing, in English, certifying that her coffin has been received in England and transported to Bath for burial.
