The Lamar Fiddlers Play the 2017 Austin Celtic Fest! Caber Tossers, Scottie Dogs, and Fiddlers…oh, my! AISD’s one and only middle school fiddlers group, the Lamar Fiddlers, entertained fans of all things Celtic at this year’s Austin Celtic Fest on Saturday, November 4th at Pioneer Farms. The Fiddlers, including Marley Angle, Pascale Easterday, Audrey Marik, Ingrid Smith, Noah Williams, and Peter Wiseman, along with Lamar orchestra director Tara Kizer, played a medley of Celtic classics, including “The Merry Blacksmith,” “Drowsy Maggie,” and “Banish Misfortune.” By the end of the set, audience members were kicking up their kilts and calling for more. Comhghairdeas (that’s “Congratulations” in Irish Gaelic), Lamar Fiddlers!

DANCE: On Friday, November 3, 49 Lamar dance majors, advanced dance students, and ten parent and teacher chaperones departed from Lamar to participate in the Showstoppers dance convention at Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. Over the course of the weekend, students took nine dance classes, observed a showcase of professional dance performances, and played in the hotel’s indoor waterpark. The students were provided opportunities to attend classes in a variety of dance genres, as well as voice training classes. Some of the genres available were as follows: jazz, hip hop, ballet, contemporary, clogging, tap, pom pon, and belly dance. The faculty at the convention consisted of professional dancers with credits including work at SYTYCD, at Disney World, on various Broadway shows, and on many other television, film, and live performance productions. The instructors led students through exercises and challenging choreography pieces. They offered advice on training and navigating the stress and challenges of life as a dance student. Eighth grade attendee Kiana Saghafi said, “Haley Mac [nationally known jazz choreographer] said to be nice to others, be nice to yourself and expect others to be nice to you.” Ava Guerro, fellow dance student added, “When you are dancing and putting your whole self into it, it is important that you can feel safe to express yourself without judgement.” Alysa Spiro, Showstopper participant and 8th grade dance student, took a leaps and turns class taught by Eliana Girard from SYTYCD. Alysa said, “One thing I learned when building my stability for turns is imagining the muscle squeezing against the bone in your ankle.” Stella Hufford, 6th grade dance major conceded, “It was really tiring, but I learned a lot.” Eighth grade dancer Charlize Cevallos wrapped up the weekend with the following words: “I saw amazing dancers who work hard and that inspired me to work hard.” This trip was the 3rd year for the dance department to attend the convention and each year the trip is a much anticipated event. Much of the success of the trip is due to the organization and leadership of dance director Natalie Adams. The trip was also significantly supported by the dance guild, parent chaperones, and associate dance directors Natalia Luna and Emily Roe. Dance students are already making plans to attend next year’s Showstoppers Convention!

VISUAL ARTS:

The Lamar MS FAA Visual Arts Department was represented at the annual State Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) conference in Galveston, Texas! Ms. Massey had an opportunity to collaborate with fellow art educators from all around Texas. This year’s theme was Dia de los Artes. Many student artworks were displayed throughout the conference, including the Gold Seal works from state Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Ms. Massey was inducted as the Middle School Division Chair Elect for the State of Texas and is extremely excited to have the opportunity to showcase our own student artwork as well as work with other middle school art teachers to motivate and innovate new creative curriculum with in the student art studio.

Mark Kelly 6th, 7th and 8th grade Computer Science

Meet Mark Kelly, our new 6th through 8th grade computer science teacher! He is a native of Austin, having lived here the past 30 years. He has been with AISD for the past 20 years. He says, “I am excited to be teaching at Lamar because of the great culture of the school, and more tangibly, I am so much closer to home now! Super excited to be a Scottie!”

A Conversation with Mr. Kelly

What made you decide to work in an educational environment?

Watching my parents while growing up. They were both educators and enjoyed teaching, learning, and having an impact on children.

Tell us about your background (where you’re from, where you went to school, how you came to be at Lamar, etc.):

I am a native Texan and have spent most of my adult life in Austin. I consider myself a “third culture kid.” I grew up overseas. My parents and I moved when I was five and didn’t come back for 30 years! I have lived in Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and South Korea. My first teaching position was at an American school in Seoul!

If someone were to shadow you for a day, what’s something they would learn about you? I never sit down. I am constantly moving around checking on the progress of each student.

What is something unique about your teaching style that sets you apart from other teachers? I am a firm believer in the middle school philosophy and follow Harry Wong’s principles of classroom management.

What are some fun facts about you?

I have been to more than 45 nations. I raise chickens for eggs and rabbits for meat. I love to cook and I am pretty good at it.

What do you think is the most important advice or wisdom you can impart to your students? Don’t give up. It does get better. And freedom isn’t free.

MacTheatre presents Act One. A journey into the making of a Broadway legend. Nov 9-12, 2017

Act One chronicles the life of famed playwright-director Moss Hart, from his poor Bronx beginnings to becoming Broadway royalty. Written for the stage by James Lapine, Tony Award winning writer and director of Sondheim on Sondheim, Into The Woods and Falsettos, among others. Act One is a show for the entire family.

About the show:

Growing up in an impoverished immigrant family in the Bronx, Moss Hart dreamed of being part of the glamorous, magical world of show business- someday, somehow. From dropping out of school to becoming the toast of the town, his autobiography Act One recounts the making of a Broadway legend. It says you can escape a home where you feel you don’t belong, you can escape a town you find suffocating, you can follow a passion (the theater, but not just the -theater) that is ridiculed by your peers, you can—with hard work, luck, and stamina—forge a career doing what you love. However modest or traumatic your beginnings, you can find your way to Oz—and you don’t have to go back to Kansas anymore.

We are pleased to offer our popular Middle School/Thespian event on November 12 (Sunday matinee). For this show only, students and chaperones tickets are $7 when purchased in advance and online.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at https://mccallum.ludustickets.com/

Show runs November 9-12; All shows start at 7 pm, except for Sundays. Sundays shows are at 2 pm.
