Scottie Dogs

fig. 1: small, medium and large scottie dogs

Find me on www.ravelry.com where my name is „yulivee“ and where I published more patterns.

If you have any questions regarding this pattern or comments on these particular projects, either contact me on ravelry or send me an e-mail ( [email protected] ).

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate. You need to know how to chain, single crochet, single crochet decreases, half double crochet, double crochet, attach and break yarn, read written instructions.

How to read a crochet pattern: → http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/tip_crochet.html

Finished Measurements: depending on your yarn and hook choice, see notes section below

Gauge: not important

Materials: any yarn with a matching hook (note: hook should be on the small size as these dogs are crocheted tightly to prevent the stuffing from showing through)polyester stuffingtapestry needlea piece of ribbon for decoration

Abbreviations (US terminology):

ch - chaindc - double crochethdc - half double crochetrep - repeatrnd - roundRS - right sidesc - single crochet

sc2tog - [insert hook through next st, pull up a loop] 2times, then yarn through all three remaining loops on hooksl st - slip stitchst/s - stitch/esWS - wrong side

Notes:

The number before each instruction does not necessarily indicate the row numbers, they indicate the individual steps.

These dogs are worked back and forth in rows, mostly in sc, in one piece. They are started with the ear, followed by the head. Then they are continued by the back and tail. Each row of the body is attached to the head, as the neck, while worked from back down to the tummy. Next is the back leg and finally the dogs are finished with the frontleg.

You need to work two of these pieces for a stuffed dog (one half can be used as an appliqué). There are several possibilities of how the pieces can be joined. I gave the option I liked best, the small one is sewn, the medium one crocheted together and the large and extra large one are also crocheted together, this time with a double faced seam. Feel free to use any of these techniques, which are explained in the specific size, or use your own one.

The smallest scottie dog makes a cute key chain. The extra large one is meant to be a pillow.

The small dog requires just a few yards of yarn, the medium a little more. For the large one I used 100g of bulky yarn (109yds = 100m/ 100g) with a gauge of 15sc per 4inches = 10cm. The extra large version uses up a lot of yarn, about 547yds = 500m with a gauge of 20sc per 4inches = 10cm.

The small and medium scottie dog are charted and have written instructions. The large and extra large scottie dog are worked in the same manner, the only difference is that there are more stitches.
