This is where you’ll find everything from middle eastern grocers and local designers to on-trend cafés and the tastiest Vietnamese Pho.

A Love Letter to Brunswick

For ten years, project architect Quino Holland has lived just a short stroll from Barry Street. In that time, he has walked by the site, imagining what he would create around the corner from his home. As both a local and an architect, he is excited about contributing to his neighbourhood, describing Barry Street as a love letter to Brunswick.

While it is modern in design, Barry Street celebrates the local history, culture and vernacular of Brunswick in a considered and authentic manner. The use of honey coloured brick acknowledges the brickworks factory and quarry that were once the dominant local industries. The suburb’s unique sense of community is expressed through the design of the communal spaces, while the internal landscape and vertical gardens are a nod to the nearby parklands.

MAlA landscapes

Key to this experienced architecture and urban design practice is the desire to create beautiful and sustainable outdoor environments. MAlA has designed Barry Street’s public, communal and private open spaces as places to enjoy time alone on the rooftop or serendipitous meetings with neighbours.

An animating principle of Fieldwork’s design is that sustainable buildings afford those who dwell within them a genuinely better living experience.

Barry Street is a space for environmentally conscious individuals, and one of the distinguishing features of the façade is a series of cloth awnings and timber shutters to allow fresh breezes and light to flow through the homes.

While environmentally sustainable design often concerns itself with material choice and energy use, Milieu and Fieldwork extend this philosophy to the creation of buildings that will age gracefully over time. As creepers extend over the façade, the timber will take on a rich, grey patina and become a part of the local streetscape.

Four design signatures have informed the design of Barry Street, each adding to a sense of identity, individuality and community.

01 . Your Own Front Door

Barry Street provides an individual sense of address, with private entrances designed as a modern interpretation of the Victorian terraces that line the surrounding streets. The result is a home that offers a distinct feeling of ownership and space, but with the opportunity to interact with fellow residents.

02 . Community

These respectful and responsive homes have been inspired by the heritage, culture and creative character of Brunswick. With its collection of communal spaces, Barry Street will be home to a new community with a shared appreciation for good design and neighbourhood pride.

03 . Customisation

Within the built form, Barry Street was initially a blank canvas, allowing residents to tailor their home to personal needs. Potential buyers were invited to complete a design survey that covered everything from bedroom configurations to the use of the rooftop garden. Their responses informed the design of Barry Street in a unique and personal way.

04 . Environmentally Friendly

Barry Street is a responsible collection of homes designed to be gentle on the environment. When complete, it will be one of the first residential developments in Australia to use Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), an alternative to concrete that has been embraced in Europe as an environmentally friendly material choice. Other sustainable features of these 7-star energy rated homes include increased insulation and thermal properties, energy saving lights, and water harvesting.
