OWNER: Jud Little HORSE HISTORY: Most people have heard about Jl Dash Ta Heav- en’s early training with Jolene Montgomery. A few of his past wins are the AQHA Junior World in Poles, Old Fort Days Derby and Rodeo, Abilene Rodeo, Dodge City Rodeo, he won the rst round at Reno, was 4th in Second Round at Reno. He then broke the arena record Lone Star Arena in Stephenville, TX and has broken several arena records including now the arena record at the historic OKC Coliseum. RIDER HISTORY: I am from Iowa originally and moved to Ardmore in January 2009 and started working at Jud Little Ranch in Febru- ary. I had actually started my own business as a massage therapist in Iowa and been doing that for 3 years before deciding I wanted to ride for more than 6 months a year. I grew up breakaway roping and I ran barrels and had started team roping as well before I moved to Ardmore. I really thought I would be a massage therapist down here and start a new business, but then the job with Jud came up and the rest is history. When I started at the Jud Little Ranch I was loping open horses for about 6 months. Then Jolene (Montgomery) asked me to work with her after her helper had left to go to school. When Jolene was going to leave and go on her own, she told me if I wanted to be the trainer she would put in a good word for me with Jud. I didn’t know a lot about training but Jolene said we had a year and she would teach me all that she could in that year and then I would just have to get runs and experience. I just really appreciate Jud giving me the chance to do this. I have a lot to learn about the futurity horses but we have good horses and we are working on it. I appreciate Jolene so much because I learned a ton from her and if it wasn’t for her and Jud I wouldn’t be where I am now. All my family still lives in Iowa and I am really close to my family so that’s hard but it is like a family at the Jud Little Ranch so that is really nice for me. BIT: Twisted wire gag from Kathy James HEADGEAR: None SADDLE: Shiloh, that’s what Jolene ran him in so we didn’t want to change that. PAD: Cutter Classic made by Steve Birdwell LEG GEAR: Classic Equine Legacy & Polos on back GRAIN: Omolene 500 SUPPLEMENTS: Maalox morning and night HAY: Alfalfa and coastal ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: Nick Meabon shoes him with leather pad just under the shoe itself for support. Dr Robin Johnson takes good care of him as his veterinarian. TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: I learned from Jolene how to get the colts really broke in the face and throughout their bodies. After the colts are really riding well, then I begin working them on the barrels. Ideally, I don’t want to have to do a lot with my hands so on the 3 year olds I like to go in there, check them and let them work around the barrel and nd their feet and the path and style that best ts them. I am still learning and still nding my style so my training & riding style is a work in progress. WHAT WAS IT LIKE SETTING AN ARENA RECORD: Before I ran, I saw all those really good horses runnings 1s (15.1s) and I just thought that my horse (JL Dash Ta Heaven) could run an 0. I knew how great all those other horses were, but after all the things JL Dash Ta Heaven has done I just knew he could do it. He is just so athletic, fast, and strong, he can do a lot of things other horses can’t. Then right before I was ready to run Jolene told me, “You can do this, don’t take no for an answer!” She is so good with getting her mind right and it must BBR World Finals Open Continued on Page 3 Nelson & JL Dash Ta Heaven Set Record DYNA SNOW SI 80 JL DASH T A HEAVEN SPECIAL EFFORT SI 104 DYNAS PLAIN SPECIAL SPECIAL FEELINS SI 93 2005 SORREL STALLION FUNNY FEELIN SI 84 DOTHAN (TB) IMA V ANS GIRL SI 76 SUDDEN FAME SI 98 DASH FOR CASH SI 114 DASH T A FAME SI 113 FIRST DOWN DASH SI 105 FIRST PRIZE ROSE SI 98 TINYS GAY SI 106 BAR DEARIE SI 90 RIDER: ASHLEY NELSON; OWNER/BREEDER: JUD LITTLE

Exciting New Additions to the BFAsubmitted by Tamara Reinhardt Barrel Futurities of America is pleased to introduce several new sponsors and announce additional awards for the 2011 BFA World Championships. In response to members’ requests the BFA has partnered with the American Quarter Horse Association to produce a $5000 Ama-teur Derby Final in conjunction with the BFA SUCCEED Derby. Similar to the $10,000 Jud Little Ranch Amateur Futurity Final, the AQHA Amateur Derby Final will feature the 5 fastest amateur derby contestants who do not qualify for the SUCCEED Derby Final. Each fi nalist will receive a check. To be eligible, SUCCEED Derby contestants must submit a copy of their AQHA amateur card with their entry. The AQHA is excited about this opportunity to be involved with the BFA and the World Championship event. Both the BFA and AQHA are committed to providing competition opportunities for all levels of riders. Too, by joining the SUCCEED Derby, AQHA invests in an age level of barrel racing that encour-ages the longevity of performance horses’ careers and can provide a second career for AQHA racehorses. RockandRoll Jeans, manufactured by Panhandle Slim, is a new apparel sponsor for the BFA World Championships. Awarding a pair of RockandRoll jeans to each of the 31 event, division, and go-round champions, RockandRoll puts their brand of “edgy” Western fashion on both men and women, adults and youth. Contestants at the BFA World Championships are invited to experience Oklahoma City Stockyards hospitality at both Cattle-men’s Restaurant and Langston’s. Nationally renowned Cattlemen’s Restaurant will be the “Winner Dinner” destination as it presents 31 meal gift certifi cates valued at $30 each event, division, and go-round champions. Langston’s Western Store is designated as the VIP Winner’s Circle sponsor for both $uper$takes and Finals competitions. BFA welcomes Champion Saddle sponsors Dr. Greg Ford, DVM and Shiloh Saddles(Stacey Autrey). Their interest and support of the BFA World Championships is appreciated. Valley Vet Supply is expanding its involvement at the BFA World Championships. Having sponsored the SUCCEED Derby Challenge Series for 4 years, Valley Vet will now be awarding $100 product bundles to each of the 1D and 2D go-round champions in the BFA Futurity, Elite Juvenile Futurity, and SUCCEED Derby(12 total). These new sponsors join an impressive roster of BFA World Championships supporters. BFA members and barrel racers are encouraged to acknowledge and thank these businesses and indi-viduals for their support of this prestigious barrel racing event. Etbauer Family to be Honored at Pioneer Days Rodeo

The Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo will feature a tribute to the Etbauer family during the opening ceremonies at each of the rodeo’s four performances, May 6-8.

“The committee wanted to do something to recognize their con-tribution, not only to our rodeo here in Guymon, but to the sport as a whole,” said Ken Stonecipher, the rodeo’s production manager.“The Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo, which is in its 79th year, made a big leap forward when the Etbauers got involved here. You know how it is when you get a couple cool kids to come to your party, and then all the other kids want to come? That’s how it was with the Etbauers, and that’s how it still is.” Stock contractor Pete Carr has helped put together a tribute that will be featured in the opening ceremonies, and rodeo offi cials are hoping to get as many of the family members as possible to gather in the arena so they may be honored for their contributions. It may have been easier to fi nd all three of the Etbauer brothers, Robert, Billy and Dan, in the same arena when they were all still competing. They were the fi rst set of three brothers to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the same year in the same event (saddle bronc riding). They did it eight times, from 1989-92 and 1994-97. Dan will be busy in his role as a pickup man at Guymon, while Robert and Billy are trying to coordinate their plans with their other rodeo schedules that involve taking their kids to junior and high school rodeos. “It’s hard to get away with all the things we have going on here at home with our horses and getting everyone to the barrel races and junior rodeos,” said Billy Etbauer, who holds the record for Wrangler NFR qualifi cations in saddle bronc riding with 21. “Those folks up in Guymon have always been awesome. It’s just an honor that they’re recognizing our family in this way.”The fi ve-time world champion is nursing a sore shoulder that’s kept him from adding to his record as ProRodeo’s only cowboy to have earned more than $3 million in a single event. “I’m just scared I won’t be able to rope with the kids if this shoulder gets any worse,” he said. Billy has no plans to enter any PRCA events in the near future, but he’s keeping his options open for the big rodeos this summer. --Courtesy of www.prorodeo.com

have rubbed off on me and I was ready to go for it . He got a little out of position through the run but we were going so fast I knew we had a good run. When I looked up and saw the time was a 14.8 and everyone was going crazy, it was unreal. I am not usually an emotional person, but I just started tearing up. Every time I get done making a run on him I am so thankful for the awesome job Jolene did training him. He wasn’t easy but once he got it, he was awesome. He tries so hard and just has a lot of heart. His style just fi ts me and he actually reminds me of the horse that got me started running barrels, Leo. They both are so honest and I feel the same confi dence on JL Dash Ta Heaven as I did when I ran Leo. Leo was the horse that got me hooked on barrel racing to begin with so it is neat that they have similar styles. THANK YOU: I would like thank Jud and Benette for giving me a chance to ride these horses. I would also like to thank Tim for being so supportive and Halee Layman (Jolene’s sister) for helping me with everything. We have a great team here, everybody wants everybody else to win and does what they can to help.

As a 4 year old we won the Jud Little Bar Nothin Barrel Bash Futurity in Ardmore, he also won the Future Fortunes Round at the BFA that same year, was Shoot Out 1D Champion in 2009, and has won some Pro Rodeos as well. He has earned probably over $100,000 in combined rodeo and barrel race earnings. Thank you also to Randy Jarvis for getting me down the alleyway! TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: When I bought him, I had a goal of winning the Future Fortunes round at the BFA in OKC. So I started patterning him myself when he was 3 and as far as training I haven’t had to do anything special, he just doesn’t require much. I brought him along slow and hauled him a bunch before I entered him. He came along really well and eventually we ended up winning the Future Fortunes Round and accomplishing our goal. He just really likes to work and I rarely ever have to tune him.

BBR World Finals, Slot Race, Futurity & DerbyApril 27-May 1, 2011, Oklahoma City, OK

Formula 707 Slot Race 1 Wood B Smokinfame, Cindy Smith, SO: Kelly Conrado, 15.356, $20,000

Q&A WITH CINDY SMITHHORSE: Wood B SmokinfameDESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF WINNING A SLOT RACE: It was Kel-ly Conrado’s slot and so I fi gured I didn’t have anything to lose, so I was just like, “Let’s go run and have some fun!” I thought if I could just ping that fi rst barrel I would be alright. He turns really tight so sometimes he makes me pucker a little but I am used to that. The horse I made it to the NFR on in ‘76 was the same way. (As a side note Cindy (then Witcher) and her mother, Marion Gramith (4-time NFR qualifi er) were the only mother and daughter to make it to the NFR in the same year in 1976!) That horse left all colors of paint on my pant legs! Anyway, in the slot race run I don’t remember the 3rd barrel but I remember the 2nd barrel. After it was over and I found out I had won I just couldn’t believe it. I have won some good checks before but that was a lot of money. I really just wanted to run back to my stall and jump up and down and pet my horse.HOW HAVE YOU KEPT HIM AT HIS BEST? I haven’t had to really do anything, I don’t have to work him. I just exercise him during the week. I did take him to some jackpots, rode him around and trotted him through the pattern to keep him calm and let him be. If I am not taking him for a few weeks I will lope him around the barrels a little on good ground and then exhibition him at the event I am running at. So far he hasn’t needed a lot of runs. I am just trying to run him when the money is up. As long as he is working, I will just exercise him and play it light. After Ft. Smith there are about 4-5 ro-deos around here that I will take him to. So, we’ll see if he wants to be a rodeo horse. I will give him 6 weeks to 2 months off over the summer if it works out. I will keep it light, he is still a baby and with horses you just have to play it by ear. If he isn’t right we will stay home. I was lucky to have such a great Mom who taught me how to think for myself when it came to training horses so I will use what she taught me throughout the year. WHAT IS THE KEY TO YOUR CONSITENCY? He just comes in hunting the barrels every time. I just hauled him along all summer to rodeos last year so he saw and heard all the things there. He just likes work-ing barrels I guess. I have trained a lot of horses over the years and I know I am lucky to have one like him. WHERE ARE YOU HEADED THE REST OF THE YEAR? We will go to Ft. Smith in 3 weeks, then maybe some circuit rodeos if they are handy, maybe a break in the summer if it works out, Jud Little Ranch Futu-rity, might go up to some of them in Montana and South Dakota. THE RUNDOWN: HAYDEN SEGELKE (18 YRS)HORSE: HPQ Smokin Rascal “Rascal” Palomino Gelding, 5 Years Old, 14.2 hands, 1000 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: My Mom ran his dam (Miss Smokin Annie) and won quite a bit at the futurities, probably some over $40k. My par-ents (Tim & Vickie Segelke) own the sire (Una Frio Cerveza) and actually Rascal is from his very fi rst crop. My sister, Paxton, actually made the Championship Round as well on Rascal’s full sister, HPQ Miss Smokin Quie. I broke and trained Rascal myself, he’s been pretty natural. BIT: My uncle’s brother-in-law made the gag bit he runs in out of scrap metal and my Dad made the headstall out of two old goat strings.

TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: My Mom (Vickie) says that the horses I break and train feel like the horses she has trained and broke so I must ride a lot like her. I start them in the ring snaffl e and progress them into a gag bit to get the bending and fl exing better. All the colts we have raised are so easy that once they are riding around good we can just go to the pattern and they just do it. With Rascal, I had him riding around pretty good and my Mom said to take him through the barrels and he just loped around them like he had been doing it his whole life. My philosophy, I guess, is that they should want to do it themselves and if they don’t want to we can let them be ropehorses or do something they enjoy. Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home By Mike Morrison By Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

Are you tired, discouraged and depressed? All across America, many feel that way and fortunes are spent each year on visits to doctors, drugs, alcohol, vaca-

tions and material purchases in an attempt to fi nd happiness. But, pills and booze won’t help. We were put into this world at this time for a purpose. So it’s easy to see that we need to go to the one who made us and the world to get the answers. The Bible is the instruction manual that God gave us to help us. Some say the letters in the word, Bible, stand for BASIC INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE LEAVING EARTH. How true that is! Pray and talk to God, stud His Word, stand on His promises, get some good, Christian friends to spend time with. And, if you help someone else out, it will also raise your own spirits. John 14:27 says, “I am leaving you with a gift--peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” Jesus also tells in Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give

you rest.” Turn your life over to Jesus and make Him your Lord and Savior. He can do all things and He gave His life for you to have an abundant life here on earth and a great future in eternity. God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 that He has plans for us, plans that are good to give us a future and a hope. So spend time with your Creator. Read His Word and talk to Him like a friend. Find a Bible based church and pray, pray, and pray some more. Spending quiet time with God will give you clarity of thought ,wisdom and peace. In no time at all you’ll realize that a peace and contentment has entered your heart and you can handle the trials of daily life in today’s world because “the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
