The 5-year-old homegrown gelding delivered by winning the open futurity, amateur and open 4D average at the fourth annual event. In the $7,500-added, 41-entry Roper Apparel & Footwear Futu- rity, Segelke and Rascal placed third in the first round and won the second round with the fastest time of the entire event, a 14.547, en route to the average victory, worth $3,328 of the $15,700 total purpose. The duo also won the 18-entry Photo Express Amateur Futurity for $660 of the $1,650. Segelke and Rascal swept the Purina Mills Open 4Ds en route to the 1D Average Championship. With the $1,013 from the two open races, their grand weekend total equaled $5,001. “He was extremely consistent,” said 18-year-old Segelke, who wanted to thank Melanie Luark of Formula 707 and Tom Olsen of Equine Pride Performance Horse Feed. “It just kind of clicked. He had three of the fastest runs of the weekend. His second run of the futurity, the first barrel was the best he’s ever had.” The Tom and Vickie Segelke raised Rascal, who bares the initials of the Segelke daughters Hayden, Paxton and Quincy. The 5-year-old palomino gelding is by Una Frio Cerveza, a 9-year-old son of Dash Ta Fame out of a daughter Twaynas Dash that broke his hip as a yearling, and the Segelkes bought as a 3-year-old. Rascal is out of Miss Smokin Annie. A daughter of Fols Smoke, Miss Smokin Annie carried Segelke’s mom Vickie to the 2001 WPRA Wrangler Divisional Tour Finals Championship. Rascal was Annie’s first foal. “He’s just like Miss Annie,” said Segelke, who is a freshman at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. “He’s pain to be around. He pushes you around and knows he can get away with it.” Rascal was a little on the small side as a 2-year-old, so Segelke waited to break the gelding until September of his 3-year-old year. By December, she had him started on the pattern. The 2010 BFA World Championship Futurity was his first futurity. The Roper Apparel & Footwear Futurity is his second futurity championship, having won the Better Barrel Races Finals Futurity in April. Rascal has also served as Segelke’s rodeo horse. “He’s been doing really good,” she said. “We’re done with our fall rodeos and I’m leading the (Central Rocky Mountain) region going into the spring rodeos in March. I high school rodeoed on him too. I won the state finals on him and made the short round at Nationals.” Roper Apparel & Footwear Futurity & Open November 18-20, 2011, Gillette, WY Futurity Average 1 HPQ Smokin Rascal, Hayden Segelke, 29.445, $1,444.40 Una Frio Cerveza-Miss Smokin Annie, Fols Smoke 2 Docs Streakin Oak, Samantha Flannery, 29.886, $1,193.20 A Streak of Fling-Miss Geminy Oak, Doc’s Oak 3 French Streak of Bling, Hallie Melvin, 30.089, $1,067.60 A Streak of Fling-PC Frenchmans Flirt, Sun Frost 4 Guys Dashing Girl, Blue Borton, 30.467, $879.20 Frenchmans Guy-Mary’s Dash Ta Fame, Dash Ta Fame 5 DWS First, Cody Hyde, 30.631, $690.80 Darkelly-Dontwatchmewalk, Steppin For The Moon 6 Sparkin Jetalena, Heather Knerr, 30.727, $439.60 Blazing Jetalena-The Rage of Vegas, Vegas The Third 7 Too Too French Girl, Hallie Melvin, 30.784, $314.00 Frenchmans Guy-Tammy Too Too, Charger Father 8 A Whole Lotta Rae, Kelly Caldwell, 31.015, $251.20 Dashing With Cash-Junie Tune, Lil Easy Cash Futurity Round 1 1 French Streak of Bling, Hallie Melvin, 14.855, $1,083.30 Segelke Sweeps Roper Apparel & Footwear Futurity Roper Futurity Continued on Page 4 MISS QUE BALL HPQ SMOKIN RASCAL FOLS NATIVE TB MISS SMOKIN ANNIE FOLS SMOKE SI 104 2006 PALOMINO GELDING DEVILS HONEY SI 102 BIG QUE MCGINLEY T WAS SPEEDING SI 108 FIRST DOWN DASH SI 105 UNA FRIO CERVEZA DASH T A FAME SI 113 SUDDEN FAME SI 98 T WAYNAS DASH SI 106 DEANS SPEED CURRENT RIDER/OWNER: HAYDEN SEGELKE; BREEDER: VICKIE SEGELKE

Wahini Cash, 1994-2011 Lanita Powers’ great Wahini Cash was laid to rest Friday, No-vember 18. The gallant gelding, by Takin On The Cash out of Ms Wahini Bug, by Bugs Alive In 75, overcame many injuries during his storied career which included a BFA World Derby Championship and many WPRA Prairie Circuit qualifi cations. Recently, at age 17, Wahini Cash won the Woodward, Okla., pro rodeo in 2011. The size of his heart will never be measured.

So when Mom (Lynne Mays a 1975 NFR qualifi er in the barrels) went looking she looked for more Judge Cash horses. We usually start our own but we let someone else start him because he acted kind of like an outlaw when he was that age. My shoer is the one who started him, I trained one of his daughters horses for breakaway and he started Jethro for me in trade. He actu-ally wore a hard hat when he took the fi rst ride on him. Jethro never did buck but you had to do everything right on him. He started him for 3 weeks and then we got him back. We usually kick our colts out after they get started but he said we better keep riding him so that is what we did. By the fall of his 3 year old he was already working really good and I was hauling him with us when I was going to rodeos in the breakaway roping. His fi rst exhibition he ran 18.8 on a standard, so we decided to take him to futurities as a 4 year old. I went to Arizona and started winning. That was the same year as Blazin Jetolena and a bunch of other tough futurity horses. He just kept placing along and we went from there. He probably won about $10-12k during his futurity year. I also ran him at some of the smaller amateur rodeos that year. During his 5 year old he went to derbies and did okay. He made the amateur fi nals that year. I also went to a few circuit rodeos on him but he didn’t do a lot of good. His 6 year old year he won the amateur association and made the circuit fi nals. The next year we tried to make the fi nals and fi nished 17th but we did win the circuit (in 2006). He has won the circuit 5 years in a row, in 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 and he also won the circuit fi nals average those 5 years. He was on track to do it again this year until his injury. He has made the NFR in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and now in 2011. He has at least $500,000 or more in lifetime earnings and was also the 2010 AQHA/WPRA Barrel Horse of the Year. BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Mays: October 31, 2011- When the vet said Jethro was 100% and ready to start exercising! That’s when I knew I was going to be able to ride Jethro at the NFR! He had stretched or damaged his

medial collateral in his stifl e. After seven weeks of treatment it was completely healed. His healing was a combination of a bunch of things; shockwave treatment, PRP treatment (draw blood, spin it down and reinject in injury site), Silver Lining Herbs, and Mom camped under him and ran cold & wrapped him and rubbed him down, anything she could do she was doing it. Everybody on Facebook was saying prayers and I appreciated it and it really seemed to help because his quick recovery was a miracle. BRR: What tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Mays: Don’t give up, don’t ever give up! I was just watching Jimmy Valvano’s speech the other night and that saying just stuck in my head. In rodeo, you are going to go through rough times, horses are going to be hurt you are going to be tired, but if you want it bad enough, never give up. That is the best thing I could tell somebody.BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride?Mays: Everyone wants to ride Martha. It would be fun to feel the power she has, she just looks like she would be so much fun. On the other hand, it is hard to say how switching riders would work, because every single horse out there has its rider and switching their rider might mess them up, the two (horse and rider) are a team. I have won right at around $100k on him. I purchased BB in January 2011 from Ed and Shona Dufurrena. She was previously trained by Michelle McCleod. Michelle had won right around $30k between when BB started competing on the bar-rels in September and December and was still green when I got her. I have won about $13k since then on her. Her lifetime earnings are closing in on $45k. BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Pierce: My highest point was winning Greeley because it was my fi rst big rodeo to win. I had won before but nothing like that. Announcing that I made the NFR was another high point. I was extremely excited, I don’t think it has even sunk in yet. I am very, very excited! I am most looking forward to actually running at the Thomas & Mack instead of just being a spectator. I’m also thrilled

to get out and meet all the fans that have cheered me on throughout the year as well. BRR: What training tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Pierce: My advice would be a little different than some of the other girls because they are trainers and I am not a trainer. I ride behind trainers. I would tell people not to try to change the horses, just learn how to ride that horse. You can’t change your horse once they

Don’t think, “this is my style so I have to stay on a certain type horses,” open up your mind and try different types of horses so you can win on different types of horses. If you are serious about bettering yourself so you can move up to that next stage of competition don’t be afraid to run against better competition, because it will make you try harder and improve. It will make you want to strive to be as good as they are. BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride? Pierce: Stingray for sure. I absolutely love Stingray. I love Sherry too, she is my idol as a trainer and rider. Stingray is little and I like little stout horse like that. Plus, she runs hard every single trip. I would also like Dolly, Jill has done such a good job with her and she is so honest and consistent, she would be a blast to ride.Sponsors & Thank Yous: I want to give the glory to God and thank the Lord for the opportunity I have. He came to our house a long 4 year old and he went to only one fu-turity at the end of his 5 year old year. Then, I just started seasoning him on the road as a 6 year old. He went to his fi rst rodeo in the August of his 6 year old. He had

to get seasoned rapidly his 7 year old year because I lost Bugs (FCS Bugsoutofsight). Bugs was my indoor horse so I had to use him at building rodeos. He had one circuit rodeo, then the circuit fi nals, then the CFR then the NFR last year. He did really well at the CFR and got stronger every round. I never planned on riding him all 10 rounds at the NFR but with Chisum hurt I had to and it was sure a blessing. The indoor rodeos aren’t Chisum’s forte but I wouldn’t have ever been able to get my-self to ride Louie all ten rounds unless Chisum was hurt. Louie handled it great and won over $100k at the NFR last year. This year he won the average at CFR and now we are headed to the NFR. His lifetime earnings are about $300,000. BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Lockhart: I think my high point was just having a good winter. It was really nice to get off to such a good start and be able to come home in April and do family stuff. I knew the season was a long way from over but those winter earnings put me a lot closer and allowed me a lot more freedom with my rodeo schedule. This was the fi rst

time I have been able to do that, so it was defi nitely nice to get off to that great start over the winter. BRR: What training tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Lockhart: There is a lot of time and dedication put into anything you want to be successful at. Dedication has a lot to do with it but attitude is very important and you have to be able to fi nd the posi-tive in what happened and raise your bar a little at a time. Success isn’t always winning, sometimes it is just doing better than you did the last time. This might mean just getting a tenth or two faster with a colt.. You have to fi nd personal success in all that you do, it can be a tough road out there, keep your head above water and keep going. I have found it is also important to try to be a positive role model to your kids, life is just too short to be negative. BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride?Lockhart: Stingray, I would be crazy not to, she has the arena record! It would be really fun to go that fast. They would all be fun, it would be fun to line them up and try them all. Sponsors & Thank Yous: We as barrel racers get all the credit but there are so many people behind the scenes that work hard to make it happen. My team of horses and family and friends and sponsors all make it happen. I really look at it as a team effort. My sponsors are Classic Equine, De-Tye Vet Supply, Woody’s Per-formance Horse Feeds, Circle Y, Boulet Boots, Cowgirl Tuff, B Bar Heart Performance Horses.

BRR: History of the horse(s) that you’ll be running at the WNFR?Smith: A friend of mine called me from the New Mexico Bred Sale and told me the Dash Ta Fame yearlings were going pretty reason-able. He said there was just a nice one through the sale and there was a decent one in the ring, so I told him I would go to $7000, he said, “Well you just bought him then!” We ran him as a two year old a little (ran 3 times for a 78 si and $150 in earnings) and then brought him home and started making a barrel horse out of him. I tried to sell him and nobody would buy him so I kept him. It seems like the ones I can’t sell and keep end up being the good ones. I ran him at the futurities as a 4 year old and he did really well for me. He won a round at the Fizz Bomb, he won the North Da-kota Barrel Futurity, won the Whoop-Up Futurity up in Canada. He ended up winning about $45k during his futurity year. I didn’t get to derby him much because he got white line for some reason and got sidelined with that. I was looking forward to going to OKC Derby and didn’t get to go. I made the NFR on him in 2009 sitting 13th and moved up while I was there. I won about $140,000 on the year. He got pneumonia at the winter rodeos in 2010 and it was really hard on him, harder than I realized it was. Plus he was sore, he just didn’t have a good year last year. This year he ran good all year, I hit some really expensive barrels this spring. I hit barrels at Houston, Laughlin, Logandale, to get big checks. He got a little sore so I stayed home for a bit and when I came back he was good and ready to go. Then he ran a nail in his foot at Salt Lake City over the Fourth of July. He hit a barrel at Nampa to win the round then did that the next day. It was a bad deal and I was distraught over that. I am tickled about the how well the year has ended up after being such a stressful year. During the middle of the summer run, Kyle (Edwards) needed to have surgery and have a section of his intes-

tine removed, between that and the hit barrels and Claimer running a nail in his foot it was a rough year, but ended up really good. His lifetime earnings is over $300,000.BRR: What was the high point of your 2011 season? Smith: Actually winning Omaha was amazing, it was not expected. The fi rst run he fell and had dirt in his stifl e, fell down on his hip and got right back up and I about pulled up and he ended up plac-ing in the round. And for it to all turn around from there was pretty neat. He has always done well at the different Tour rodeos and fi nals but had never won, so it was a cool one to win. I fl ipped my reins over his head at the second barrels in the fi nals and he won and had his fastest time of the weekend. I have a picture of the reins on one side and whipping him with the over and under on the other side, so it was just a pretty neat win. BRR: What training tip would you give the average competitor wanting to raise their level of competition? Smith: The things that have helped me step up my level of compe-tition are getting the best horses I can get and horsemanship. You are only going to go as fast as your horse will let you. You can get better horses in two ways, through raw talent or fi nding a horse that tries harder than all the other horses. With your horsemanship don’t go overboard with asking them for too much. You have to know how to ask for a lot but not go over the line and that to me is good horsemanship. Some of Claimers best runs have come after I went back and softened him up without even working the barrels. Also, fi t the horse to the rider, I like a horse that can make mistakes and still clock, because I make plenty of mistakes!BRR: If you could ride any other horse other than your own at the NFR, what other 2011 NFR horse would you ride?

JB Quarter Horses honored horses from their breeding program and horse sale at the 3rd Annual JB Quarter Horses Futurity, held in conjunction with the Elite Extravaganza and 3rd Annual Creating Legends Sale, Nov. 10-12 at the Extraco Center in Waco, Texas. Lisa Anderson and Miss JB 712, a daughter of Dallas Fuel owned by Amanda Stenseth, claimed the $5,000 fi rst-place Creating Leg-ends Incentive check for being the fastest horse, by the JB Quarter Horses stallion in the qualifying round of the futurity. They out ran Miriam Conner and Hot Corona Cowgirl, who claimed the $3,000 second-place check and the sale graduate championship saddle for being the highest-placing horse purchased through the Creating Legends Sale.Creating Legends Champion With less than four months of barrel racing competition un-der her belt, Miss JB 0712 (“Memphis”) carried Lisa Anderson to the Creating Legends Incentive Championship at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity. Anderson and her husband, Brad, got the daughter of Dallas Fuel out of Twelve Dozen Roses, by Magic Dozen, as a yearling

from Joe and Dee Braman. They ended up selling the mare after the JB Quarter Horses Futurity last year. “We had some friends come down from Montana and try a bunch of horses, and they liked her,” Anderson explained. “We didn’t necessarily want to sell her but our helper needed a better house so that’s how we paid for that.” Warren Stenseth, Lewiston, Mont., purchased the mare for his daughter, Amanda, a high school rodeo competitor. Surprisingly, Anderson got a call from Stenseth this summer that he wanted his daughter to run the mare at high school rodeos this spring. “We thought we were going to futurity her as a 5-year-old,” Anderson explained. “So she had been hauled off the place three times in six months—no exhibitions, no time onlies, nothing. About August 6 or 7, I entered her in her fi rst race. She’s clocked some amazing times. That mare can really run. She hasn’t been exposed to too much inside because we’re not inside in South Texas. I like to train outside too because I think it gives you a true read on a horse as far as their ability and turning style. If seems if you run them

outside, they’re more apt to make a rodeo horse down the line, at least in my opinion.” Amanda, a high school senior, is coming down to ride Memphis this week. “Amanda is a very talented individual,” said Anderson, a Montana native who trains horses out of Moore, Texas. “She’s a very quick learner and a very good rider. I’m excited because the mare will have a very good career with her.” Anderson also said she wouldn’t mind riding another Dallas Fuel. “She’s a very talented mare with athleticism and quickness,” she said. “She’s high energy, very willing. Even when the high school girl came down and rode her as a 3-year-old, I could tell she was going to be a talented horse.”Sale Graduate Champion When Miriam Conner, Columbus, Texas, purchased Hot Corona Cowgirl (formerly Miss JB 0721) at last year’s sale, she was on crutches recovering from a compound fracture of her right foot. “I didn’t even get to try her before I bought her,” said Conner. “I came up here and didn’t even bring a trailer.”National Finals Rodeo qualifi er Kassie Mowry had Hot Corona Cowgirl (“CC”) started on the pattern. Unfortunately, she went from the sale straight to being turned out in the pasture. “I thought I’d be off crutches by December and it ended up be-ing fi ve months!” said Conner, who made her fi rst competitive runs

on the mare at the Wrap N 3/JB Quarter Horses Futurity in April. “I had almost no practice runs before that. I thought it’s an hour from my house; I’m going to go. She was so green.” Conner has won $4,000 in Creating Legends Incentive money. She picked $500 checks at the Wrap N 3 event and Old Fort Days Futurity, and picked up $3,000 at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity in Waco. “She hasn’t remotely reached her potential because of me,” she said. “It’s just been injuries to the rider and stuff like that.”Conner said she loves that CC, a 4-year-old daughter of Hot Co-rona out of Dallas Cowgirl, by Dallas By Six, is how sensible the mare is. “She can get hot and charge-y but it takes nothing to bring her down,” she said. “You just say no we’re not doing that right now and she’s like okay. I love that. I just haven’t had enough opportu-nities to go run her. She’ll really come on and be really good next year. She’s very athletic and very willing. She tries really hard and is a smooth ride and that’s important at my age!” In 2012, JB Quarter Horses will again award $13,000 in Creat-ing Legends Bonus Money at select futurities. To be eligible, horses must be sired by a JB Quarter Horses-owned stallion—One Hot Jose, Hot Corona, Dallas Fuel, Two Timen Fuel and Chasin Firewa-ter. Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Mike Morrison by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

A rancher died in Montana a couple weeks ago. I did not know the man but a friend of mine told me a lot about him. My friend and the deceased were friends from childhood

growing up on neighboring ranches. They graduated high school from the small community school with only nine in their class. They served part of their time in the military together. They were very close friends. Then what happened? Life happened. They each got married and had families. They ended up on ranches 100 miles from each other, the years rolled by and they lost tough with each other. Proverbs 18:24 says, “...a friend sticks closer than a brother.” It’s sad, in this life, when two good friends get so busy they haven’t time for each other. But, it’s worse when people get so busy and wrapped up in the world that they lose touch with God. Jesus is the best friends you’ll ever have so keep your relationship with Him alive. It’s been said that “BUSY” is an acronym for “being under sa-tan’s yoke” and it seems to be true today with the fast pace so many live.

Even the busiest person can pray while driving, cleaning horse stalls, cooking or washing the pickup. If you can’t fi nd time to read a chapter in God’s Word to you, then read one or two verses. God knows what we need in this life and He will take care of us and direct us if we trust Him. He said in Matthew 6:33 that we need to seek fi rst the kingdom of God and His righteousness and our needs would be met. Jesus died for us so we can have a good and abundant life now and enjoy eternity with Him. Don’t get so busy living that you forget it will end some day. Spend time with God. TALK WITH HIM! It’s the best friendship you can have!
