Jack Carberry Todd, Weather

Gallery visitors will remember Jack’s exhibition in January,’ Fracture’ and its striking impact. This time, six months further on in his degree course at University College, Falmouth, we were delighted to see him return with more atmospheric paintings on the theme of ‘Weather’. A fluent and natural painter, Jack can handle very large canvases and now, using an increasingly subdued palate and often very thin paint, can convey moody landscapes which vividly suggest our ever unpredictable climate. He intuitively exploits the vagaries of paint; drips and runs are all harnessed to become an intrinsic part of the painting. In the much smaller scale paintings on board, atmosphere is conveyed by the simplest means – here the paint is little more than a stain. Photographs of sketchbooks show Jack’s working processes and his keen observation of the landscape with great depth of field in his drawings and a feel for colour in his colour sketches. We look forward to future exhibitions by this talented young artist and to following his career.

Jane Wood

From Jo Hoskin. It was an unexpected pleasure walking into the latest art exhibition at Stuart House. The large canvases on display both intrigued and engaged my young family and me. Although abstract the contemporary experimental techniques used were accomplished and evocative. Moorland landscapes mesmerisingly filled the gallery. The deeper you looked at each canvas the greater the connection between viewer and painting. On reflection the highest compliment I can give is that the paintings reminded me of Turner.

I won’t forget seeing them and the joy I felt discovering them in a small gallery in Liskeard.

Linda Maynard and StudentsIn recent years we have come to expect more of this group than a rivalry with ‘Knit ‘n’ Knatter’ in the decibel stakes; this year’s exhibition was no disapointment.

The paintings themselves showed greater confidence in their technique by the artists, and the resulting general high quality must be a source of satisfaction for Linda.

The images were, above all, fun; my apologies to those artists for whom this was not the intention, but it was a truly entertaining event and fully deserved the extra week of viewing that was demanded.

Geoff Cox - Walls Bridges and Bluebells

Geoff rounded off a notable August of art exhibitions with his annual exhibition of paintings, and most memorable, etchings. It must have been a good year for bluebells, they figured very prominently and skilfully as subjects in both media, but the main theme that emerged from this collection of his personal surroundings was the harmony between man-made structures, particularly walls and bridges, and the encroaching but complementary natural environment, in various seasonal conditions. Paradoxically, one of the most striking, the Tamar road bridge, achieved its effect by being wrenched from its familiar background.

Here’s to his next return, but with the cries of Quasimodo ringing in the imagination . . . . ?

- from Eileen, Valerie, and all the helpers, to all the contributors of high quality articles for sale from the Stuart House Shop. Particularly gratifying has been the supply of good quality books, they’ve flown off the shelves in aid of the house, and would doubtless do the same again once you have read them and brought them in for re-sale, as well as fresh supplies of such books that have not yet come our way.

A word of warning - Guy Fawks is not yet burned but Christmas is not far off; now is the time to stock up with high quality, a little out of the ordinary, presents. There may be other sales in December, but Stuart House Shop remains open only till September 28th.

A Big Thank You too to all our customers, and best wishes for a really prosperous New Year.

Please come and share it with us!

This continues to win warm approval and appreciation from visitors thanks to the work of the U3A Down to Earth group and to John B. for mowing the lawn.

It is a little soggy at time of writing but still colourful and worth a visit if you haven’t been in lately.
