Barr’s Hill News

Feedback is always appreciated from parents and carers and I am always keen to meet and listen to parents views about how we can improve the school.

I wish you a pleasant weekend.

Friendly Match vs. President Kennedy SchoolBarr's Hill's year 7 boys and year 7/8 girls played a couple of friendly basketball matches versus President Kennedy School.

Our boys were victorious, scoring over 30 points more than their opposition. The girls faced a difficult challenge as they came accross an experienced year 8 team, but all students performed to the best of their ability with maximum effort!

Year 7 girls (only) have a basketball game against Coundon Court in 2 weeks so they must be at training on Mondays. For further information, please see Teacher of P.E, Mr Joseph.

Winners: Athletics ChampionshipsA huge congratulations to Jack Done (1st place in the Discus), Jerry Uyimkeshi (2nd place in Shot Putt), Bryan Lengelo (2nd in Shot Putt and 3rd in 600m), and Freddie Hardy (3rd in Shot Putt). These students took part in the Athletics Championships and were ranked in the top three places out of all of the schools in Coventry.

The students had to undergo a grueling qualifying round, in which the top 8 students from each event across the City went through to the Championships. Despite the blazing sun, all three managed a podium position in their chosen event. A fantastic achievement and a big well done!

Practice Expeditions: Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards

June saw the practice expeditions for our Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards taking place. This is an opportunity for students to put in place all the skills they have learnt over previous months: pitching tents, map reading, compass skills, camp cooking and so on.

Our Bronze expedition took us to Berkswell and Kenilworth. Despite an eventful first day, students successfully navigated themselves to Kenilworth and have planned for their final expedition going out this weekend in Fen End and Meriden. Good luck to our Bronze participants!

Our silver expedition... one word: HOT!!! 28 degree heat and minimal shade made it a very testing time and the invrease in remoteness, in comparison to Bronze, showed how the challenge had really increased. Students found the practice useful to really understand the increased level of fitness required and the importance of keep-ing hydrated. The final expedition goes out on the 12th-14th July in the Peak District.

Good luck to all involved!

We are pleased to confirm the change in School Day which was agreed by the school Governors to be in place for September 2018.

In summary, the day for students will start at 8.45am, finishing at 3.00pm and is detailed below. We would expect students to be in their tutor room with their equipment out and ready to learn at 8.45, so it is advisable for students to arrive by 8.40 to ensure they are not late and suffer the resulting sanction.

Can I also remind you that we will continue to run our very popular Free Breakfast Club every morning next year - free tea, coffee, juice and toast is available for all students in our canteen from 8am.

Change in timing of the School Day

Year 10 Wish TreeYear 10 GCSE Art created a Wish Tree inspired by Yoko Ono, where students and teachers can write their wishes and place them on the branches of the tree. The tree is located by the entrance to the school, so please take a look and read some of the fantastic wishes placed by our students.

Well done to all students on creating a touching piece of art-work!
