Membership: Denise Larbig reported that she has received yearly North Shore membership dues from 123 families, for a total of $10,225.00. If you haven’t done so already, please send your dues to Denise at 420 Park Creek Ct. Just a reminder, yearly dues are $100.00 per household. Dues for seniors (65 and older) are $50.00 per household.

Park: Rae Regula reports that our playground looks wonderful, thanks to all who showed up with shovels, wheelbarrows, and lots of enthusiasm on mulch-spreading day last month. Also, thank you to Brian Siwinski for use of his Bobcat.

Pier: Brian Ferguson reports there are still 2 slips available at the pier. Please call Brian at 410-360-0972 to reserve slips. A future date will be set for a ‘decking/bulkhead repair work party.' Also, some electrical repairs are needed. Please contact Brian if you have skills in that area.

Entertainment: Lisa Schell reports that Family Day was a huge success. The weather was perfect, water not too cold (as evidenced by all the kids swimming)! Plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers were on the grill, plus cold drinks. Thanks to everyone who brought a dish. Everything was delicious. A reminder, our next community event is the July 4th parade. Fire trucks will be here, so decorate your wheels, whatever they may be, and come join the fun. Meet at the corner of Dutchship Road and Dutchship Court at 10:00 AM on the 4th.

Roads and Zoning: Lois Warner reports that 2 families submitted requests for Board approval to remove dead trees from their property. Motion was made to approve, seconded. All were in favor, so it carried. A reminder, mosquito spraying in the neighborhood will begin soon. Neighbors requesting exemption from spraying can contact the Program Supervisor for Anne Arundel County at 410-841-5870 or http://www.mda.state.md.us" www.mda.state.md.us.

Welcome: Jeanne Brush - Please contact Jeanne if you are aware of new neighbors in the community. This applies to new homeowners as well as those who are renting. Jeanne’s phone number is 410-255-0636. Thanks.

Garden Club: Sarah Ann Parsons reminds everyone of our North Shore Luau scheduled for Friday, July 31st at 6:00 PM at the beach. There’s always lots of fun, food, and cold drinks. Also, the Garden Club will host an Afternoon Tea on Monday, June 15th at the home of Dee Feehley. Greater Pasadena Council: Delegate Steve Schuh spoke at the last meeting about some issues that were recently passed. Among them were the outlawing of text messaging while driving, the narrowing of the death penalty, and the increase on property taxes that won’t happen this year as a result of the bailout. For more information, please visit www.northshoreaa.com

New Business: Once again, a reminder that Anne Arundel County laws state that animals must be on their owner’s property or on a leash. Please keep an eye out for unleashed dogs. Animal control can be contacted at 410-222-8900.

Our North Shore website has been updated, thanks to Jon Bailey. You will find all the upcoming events there, as well as on the front page of the Barnacle.

Got Any Really Bad Stuff in the Garage?Recently I inherited all kinds of lawn and garden chemicals from my parents. “Oh joy!” I thought as I pondered the wonders of a pest-less garden with towering rose bushes. However, I couldn’t shake the visions of floating fish, sick birds and algae bloom in our creek. “Just toss it all in the trash” was my gut reflex, but that, too rang a bit flat. What about the groundwater that will eventually get contaminated?Back to my trusty computer and web-search. It turns out that I needed to locate a Household Hazardous Material Collection site. I did so, and below are the results. Please note that the various landfills take HHW only a few days out of the year, so plan ahead. See you at the Glen Burnie dump on June 20th!!! Local Household Hazardous Materials (HHW) Collection ProgramsThe Annotated Code of Maryland, Environment Article § 9-1801, defines Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any waste material, including garbage or trash, derived from a household that would be listed as hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act but for the fact that the waste is derived from a household. Household hazardous waste may include:   agricultural chemicals, cleaning agents and solvents, paint, pesticides, and preservatives.Maryland does not regulate HHW as hazardous waste and Federal law allows for the disposal of HHW in household trash.  However, due to the potential of HHW to cause physical injury, contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems, and present hazards to children and pets, MDE recommends the proper recycling/disposal of HHW materials at local HHW collection programs.Special handling is required to dispose of them properly. Materials collected are recycled, or disposed in hazardous waste landfills or incinerators. A licensed private company under contract to the County provides these services.New disposal chambers at the Millersville landfill, called "cells," are not only double-lined, but include a system that collects any liquids (leachate) which pass through the trash. This liquid still must be removed, treated, and disposed of at a County water reclamation facility. Despite advances in landfill management that minimize environmental risk, it is still important that the waste stream be rid of wastes that are hazardous.2009 Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Days6/20/2009 Glen Burnie Convenience Center100 Dover Road, Glen Burnie7/25/2009 Millersville Landfill & Resource Recovery Facility389 Burns Crossing Road, Severn
