Director’s Note

I would like to say straight up how thankful and delighted I am for the opportunity to work for GCLT with two of the Coast’s finest actresses Kate McNair and Tara Page.

I have not had the pleasure of working with them previously, and they are two wonderful, beautiful and loving people who I have admired for years. Both actresses are more widely known for their award winning performances in serious productions such as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and MacBeth.

You will be amazed at just how funny and loveable these normally serious performers are in the roles of larrikin

barmaids Nancy and Val and how they really bring to life characters that I am sure, we will all have crossed paths with or known during our own lives.

I am also incredibly thankful to be blessed with such a wonderful and creative production team. I especially would like to thank Lawrie Esmond, Kate Boxall and Terry Docker and Peter McLean for their unwavering support and hard work in helping me to create this production.

There are of course many, many people who have made the journey with us and I encourage you all to read the following credits page and give thanks to each and every one of them for their wonderful contributions.

For a play with only two performers (and 6 Dummys) you can see just how many people have generously offered their time and talents to help create our production of Barmaids.

The play itself is one that I am sure will resonate with most of you as I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t have their own “Pub” story or experiences with characters similar to those in Barmaids.

I hope you enjoy Barmaids just as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to the Gold Coast Little Theatre stage for you.

Sincerely,

Michael SuttonDirector

Kate would like to thank Michael and his crew - especially Lawrie, Terry & Kay, Di, Del and Peter - without their hours of dedication this production would not exist. A special mention to Noella, Shane, Doug, Johndavid, Jemma, Carmen, Sally,Ruby & Jess for their wisdom and grace. Thanks you to Krisha, James & Sophie and Clancey the dog for their invaluable assistance with the dialogue - Kate wishes you all a great time at the front bar of The Arms!

The Author

Katherine Thomson is the multi-award winning writer everyone knows….without actually realizing they know who she is!For years we have been enjoying her works.

Her extensive television screenwriting credits include tele-movies The House of Hancock, (Winner, 2015 AWGIE Original Tele-movie), Shapelle, Blackjack, Halifax FP, and series Australia: The Story of Us, Austrslia on Trial, Killing Time, East West 101, Satisfaction, Wildside, Grass Roots, Fallen Angels, Snowy and GP, Answered By Fire, Darwin’s Brave New World, Unfolding Florence – The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst, and Women He’s Undressed.

For theatre, Katherine has been the Writer-in-residence at the Sydney Theatre Company, and now a long serving board

member of that company. Her other plays include: Diving for Pearls, Darlinghurst Nights, A Sporting Chance, Mavis Goes To Timor, Wonderlands, Navigating, Tonight We Anchor In Twofold Bay.All of Katherine’s writings seem to have one major component in common, the use of excellent and detailed characterisations of people with personalities we have all known and recognise, to such an extent, we feel somehow, we already know the characters. Barmaids is a perfect example of this.

About Barmaids

Barmaids - The story of two Australian women of a “certain age” working as Barmaids in a run-down pub in a Port town somewhere in Australia.

Nancy and Val know how a good bar should be run. When they

step behind the bar they are in control. They recognise the value of service and loyalty and they look after their regulars.

Then one day the pub is bought by a syndicate and accountants start hatching new schemes to bring in more customers. Nancy and Val go into battle to protect their beloved bar, their customers and their own dignity.Barmaids is based on the colourful stories of real Australian Barmaids and is about the loyalty and bonds between a barmaid and a drinker.

Very Funny, a little bit crude and very Australian.
