Caladiums are one of the best bedding plants for use during Louisiana summers.
Adapted to shade or partial shade, caladiums provide red, pink and white foliage from late spring through the fall. Some newer varieties even perform well in full sun.
Caladiums are a great companion plant for impatiens. Avoid deep shade when selecting a landscape location for caladiums because Early April through May is the suggested planting time for caladiums in southern Louisiana.
Plant caladium tubers (they are not bulbs) in slightly acid soils having high organic matter and good drainage, and till the bed to a depth of 6-8 inches.
It is very important to provide adequate irrigation once caladiums are established. Plants do not perform to expectations if water is limited, but at the same time remember that the landscape bed needs to be well drained to avoid standing water and excessive soil moisture.
When planting caladiums, place groups of three tubers 2-4 inches apart in a triangular pattern. These groupings should be placed 12-18 inches apart.
If jumbo grade tubers are available, these can be planted alone 1 foot apart. Cover tubers with 1½ inches of soil.
Adding bone meal or phosphorus will help plants develop a strong root and stem system.
Be patient after planting caladium tubers. It takes about four to six weeks for adequate foliage to develop. Caladiums also make good potted plants.
To develop a bushy plant in a container, “scoop” out the center bud of the tuber. This results in a shorter, more compact plant. Pots can be placed outdoors or indoors, and leaves can be cut for long-lasting floral arrangements.
Leaves of caladiums will begin to die back in early fall. Since it is not recommended to over-winter caladium tubers in the soil under Louisiana’s growing conditions, dig and store caladium tubers for replanting next year.
Dig tubers after dieback begins. Don’t remove any live foliage still attached to the tuber.
Dry tubers for several days and store in a dry material – peat moss, sawdust, etc.
Place in a well-ventilated area with a temperature range of 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not refrigerate caladiums during storage. They do not require chilling like tulips and other bulbs do.
Most retail garden centers now carry 15-20 caladiums varieties.
Recommended varieties for Louisiana include Miss Muffet, Mumbo, Pink Gem, Red Frill, Seagull, Sunset, Sweet Heart, Fire Chief, Rosebud, White Queen and Carolyn Wharton.
PLANT CALADIUMS IN APRIL
The time to prune spring-flowering shrubs is in March or April.
By pruning as soon as the flowers have disappeared, the plants will have time to grow new shoots before the middle of the summer when they form the buds for next spring’s flowers. Pruning later in the year will result in the removal of next year’s flower buds.
Popular shrubs to prune in Louisiana immediately after flowering are the azalea, flowering quince, forsythia, bridal wreath, nandina and jasmine.
Prune most flowering shrubs so that about one-third of the oldest and tallest shoots are removed each year. Cut these leggy shoots to within 4 to 6 inches of the ground. The stubs left after pruning will produce new shoots to fill in near the bottom. This should make the plant more compact.
After pruning, thin out the top of the plant. Make random cuts, being careful not to make the plant look as though it has been butchered or severally sheared. Annual pruning is much better than a severe one done after several years of growth.

Deadly Advice
A DEADLY TURN - One fisherman we see on a regular basis here in Slidell is Captain Dudley Vandenborre, the designer of the “Deadly Dudley” lure series and fisherman emeritus. Dudley sends much of his product to his customers from my wife’s shipping and mailing center in the south area of the city and through the years we have come to know him and his family. Dudley recently had open heart surgery and missed most of the earlier spring speck runs in the area. We’ve been actively working with Dudley to grace our reports with his fishing knowledge since last year but pending media projects and other matters had delayed things.
Until now. Dudley Vandenborre will begin a fishing feature this issue entitled “DEADLY ADVICE”. Dudley will take your questions about fishing techniques, tackle and fishing conditions and answer them. Visions of red, plump, juicy and flavorful vine-ripened tomatoes are on nearly every home gardener’s mind as ground is broken for the first time for planting each spring.
The tomato remains the most popular vegetable grown in our home gardens. Gardeners should select varieties that have a proven performance record in our state. While there are hundreds of varieties, many of those touted in mail-order publications will not grow well in Louisiana.
Varieties recommended by the Louisiana Extension organization have proved themselves good producers under the state’s soil and climatic conditions. Those recommended varieties include Champion, Celebrity, Pole King, Floramerica, Mountain Pride, Pelican, Creole, Traveler 76, Better Boy, Jet Star, Supersonic B and Fantastic.
A promising new Hybrid is Bingo. All are red fruit varieties, except Traveler, which is pink. Good canning types are Roma and Toyal Chico. For cherry tomatoes, choose the new Chelsea or Sweet 100, Large Red Cherry, Cherry Grande or Small Fry.
The nice thing about growing a staked vegetable like the tomato is that it requires so little garden space, so anyone with a little land can be a tomato grower. Plants tied to stakes are capable of producing many pounds of usable fruit per plant, and staking also reduces disease problems.
Tomato plants prefer a fertile, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. Fertilize soils of low to medium fertility with 8 to 10 pounds of a complete fertilizer, such as 8-24-24, per 100 feet of row. You may add such organic matter as compost to the soil prior to planting. Plant on high rows (8-10 inches) to improve the soil drainage.
Transplant tomatoes into the garden after the danger of frost has passed. If tomato plants are set out and a frost is likely, cover the plants with hot caps, paper sacks, boxes or some other material to avoid frost damage.
Space tomato plants 18 to 24 inches apart on rows. Rows should be 3 to 3 1/2 feet apart. Set plants slightly deeper in the soil than they were growing in containers. The less the roots are disturbed when transplanting, the less transplant shock the plants will experience.
Black plastic mulch can be very beneficial in early tomato production, because plastic warms the cool spring soil, resulting in earlier yields. The mulch also helps control weeds and conserve soil moisture and fertilizer. The plastic may also help to reduce fruit rot by preventing the fruit from touching the soil or disease organisms in the soil form splashing up on the fruit.
Stake tomato plants after the first flower cluster is formed by placing the stake on the opposite side of the stem from the cluster. This will keep the fruit from being jammed against the stake. Nearly all the flower clusters will be formed on the same side of the stem. Tie the plant to the stake with a soft string or strip of cloth. Pass the string under a leaf stem to give best support. Wire cages also are popular support systems in home gardens.
Prune the plants to one or two main stems by pinching out the suckers that form at the leaf base. Prune to about 2 feet and then stop.
When days become longer and spring is near, our fondest thoughts are of the delicious taste of the “Creole Tomatoes” that will be appearing on the market in a few months. Often local backyard growers go to local feed stores demanding “Creole” tomato plants to set out in their own gardens. However, they are often told that no “Creole” tomato variety plants are available, but are offered a substitute instead. Yet, “Creole” tomatoes are offered for sale at every corner in spring. What gives?
Fifteen or twenty years ago, a new variety of tomato “The Creole” was introduced. It soon became a favorite among locals for its yield, size, and taste. “Creole Tomato” became interchangeable with quality and flavor. As a result the parishes growing this tomato adopted it and became identified with it. However, over the years the “Creole” variety has dwindled in popularity. It is still available, but is out produced by other varieties.
These other varieties are known to the seed companies, growers and knowledgeable people by the true names such as Celebrity, Floradade, and Better Boy along with numerous other varieties. All of these varieties also are flavorful, large and of high quality.
Now to reduce confusion among the buying public, all varieties of tomatoes grown along the river and surrounding areas and receiving the benefits of our warm climate and fertile soils are recognized as “Creole” tomatoes, regardless of its variety name. The flavor of fresh picked, vine-ripened locally grown tomatoes is of such a unique statue that all local tomato lovers are awaiting the cry of “Creole Tomatoes”.

Th i s n e w w e b s i t e reflects six years of work by a coalition of bear states partnered with bear education non-profits and wildlife educators to develop a two-tier bear education program that educates the general population on Living with Black B e a r s, w h i l e a l s o formal ly educat ing our next generation o f s tudents about Understanding Black Bears.
Now students and teachers can access an entire year’s worth of exciting black bear education for learning at home and in classrooms. Though anyone can download the free program and access the Student’s Section, Louisiana state teachers will need to register to receive their exclusive access code. Two decades ago, the Louisiana Black Bear was on the brink of extinction, but today it is on the rebound. When the Louisiana Black Bear was listed as threatened in 1992 under the Endangered Species Act, there were estimated to be fewer than 300 of them left in the world. Today, innovative programs to reestablish these animals and restore their habitat through improved land management, high-tech monitoring, and public education are enabling the recovery.
