Book Week & Library 1st Birthday Celebrations! Next week we will celebrate Book Week as well as our Library turning 1 year old. We will have a birthday celebration with the students on Monday and celebrate with a cake for all to share. On Tuesday and Wednesday morning the library will be open for parents and students to buy a book to donate to the library. All books donated will acknowledge the child and year the book was purchased for our 1st Birthday! Think of it as a birthday gift for all our students. The books are great quality texts and priced between $4 and $25.

Showcase at the Juniors Our Junior and Senior dance groups had a great rehearsal at Souths this week. The performance will be next Thursday evening 25th August beginning at 7pm. All students must meet Mrs Bragg at Rainbow Street Public School Hall at Randwick at 6pm fully dressed in costume including their hair and shoes. If your child could have some foundation on their face when they come to the hall, that would save time. Parents who can assist with make up would be most appreciated between 6pm and 6.30pm. Children will travel from the school hall by bus to Souths before their performance and return afterwards. Parents must collect their child from the Rainbow Street hall at the end of the evening. Your child's costume will be sent home next week. Please look after it and return it to school promptly after the performance. Tickets are now available at the school office. Parents who required an extra ticket can now pay for and collect the ticket from the office. Good luck to Jordan and Sera who will be the comperes for the evening.

Spectacular News Mrs Bragg and Miss Lowe will be attending the first meeting for the Schools Spectacular on Friday afternoon. We will be able to confirm dates for rehearsals and performance information after this day.

Band News The band have been working very hard over the last few weeks and are just about ready to perform. The school band have booked in their first performance for the Week 10 school assembly. Kevin and Phil have asked that parents ensure that their children are practising throughout the next few weeks at home in preparation for this event. We look forward to hearing the band soon.

Kindergarten Orientation Day Kindergarten Orientation will take place on Tuesday 30th August at 9.15am in the school hall. Parents of Kindergarten students for next year will hear about the year ahead. Representatives from our uniform supplier will be at the school on the morning to assist with ordering. Students attending the Preschool this year and coming to the school next year will come up to the school with the Preschool staff. Please be at the Preschool at 9.10am and then come to the school hall.

Father's Day Stall Our annual Father's day stall will take place at school on Thursday 1st September. We invite all children to donate a gift for the stall to ensure that we have enough presents for every child to purchase a gift for dad/grandpa. Donations could include key rings, coffee cups, chocolates, men's grooming items, sporting items, car care kits etc. Please start bringing in your gifts to the school office in the next couple of weeks. Children can get 10000 house points for their donations. It would be appreciated if parents could wrap the gift in clear cellophane so that the children can see what they are buying. Gifts will cost from $2 to $15. There will also be a raffle but students can only buy up to $5 worth of tickets. Volunteers to run the stall will be asked for soon.

Principal’s Message: Classes throughout the school have been enjoying Science Week by carrying out a variety of investigations and experiments. Students have been asked to predict and analyse results and have engaged in higher order thinking tasks. It has been great to see and talk with students about the work they are doing. The P&C Trivia Night is coming up on the 10 September and I hope all community members support this event either by attending or offering donations. The work of the P&C enables the school to purchase equipment and upgrade the facilities at the school. I am truly grateful for their support. If you want to book a table please contact Ann Fenton on 0410 347 326. The teachers are preparing for the night! It is important that all students in our school feel happy and safe. We often have disagreements in the playground and classrooms and these issues are dealt with at school. When these issues are taken beyond the school and parents become involved the problems seem to grow out of proportion. Often parents do not have all the information they need to totally understand what has happened. It is inappropriate for parents to attempt to speak to students in the playground about things that have happened at school and badgering or name calling by parents is abhorrent. This can be seen as intimidation or bullying as the power balance between an adult and a child is very much in the adult’s favour. This inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated by the school. As part of the ’Enclosed Lands Act’ the principal can ban people from entering the school grounds and if necessary I will enforce the Act. I am sure all parents want their child and all students to be happy and safe at school.

Science Week at BPS This week all classes have celebrated Science Week by doing some fantastic experiments in their class. The students have been thinking about and investi-gating many scientific phenomena, working out how and why things happen as well as making their own hypotheses. Well done all students!

Rugby League Teams at ANZ Stadium Congratulations to both the senior boys and girls rugby league sevens teams who played at ANZ Stadium as part of the Souths vs Eels game last Monday night. Both teams were runners up in the Bob McCarthy Cup. Special thanks to the teams’ coaches Mark and Sharon Lyons.

2F investigating tiny iron particles found in Nutrigrain. It really is IRON man and woman food!

1S investigated coloured light. Don’t they look groovy in their glasses!

5M investigate acid rain using chalk and were amazed by the damage it causes. They also made amazing Mobius strips which were very interesting!
