The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, July 17, 2017 BANKS REBUILDING IMAGES DESPITE WELLS FARGO SCANDAL Bank advertising on television varies greatly by market with many financial institutions choosing to enhance their reputations via institutional advertising rather than promoting specific services or offers. In a new study done by Reputation Institute for American Banker, the industry shows a gain in consumers’ feelings about reputations, despite the well-publicized phony-accounts scandal at Wells Fargo. Led by Synovus Financial and USAA (80.7 and 80.3 respectively on a 100-point scale used by Reputation Institute) the 39 banks studied averaged a 70.8, moving the entire industry into the “strong” category as defined by Reputation Institute. That’s a significant gain over the 2016 average of just 67.1. More than half of banks evaluated receive “excellent” scores from their customers, and perhaps more tellingly according to American Banker, more than 30% of the institutions received “strong” reputation scores from non- customers. Wells Fargo took a huge 18.7 point drop to 48.6, with Bank of America next to the bottom at 57.2, albeit a 1.8 point improvement over 2016’s score. Generally, smaller and regional banks scored better than the largest institutions as big banks including PNC, Ally, Chase, TD Bank, Comerica, Capital One, BB&T, SunTrust, KeyBank, Fifth Third, Citibank and HSBC all were below the industry standard. Many of those are significant television advertisers. Despite that, the largest banks continued to show weak reputations among their non-customers. The survey looks at seven factors in evaluating reputations: products and services, innovation, leadership, workplace, performance, citizenship, and governance (policies on how it conducts business). While it’s noted the categories that most heavily influence people’s perception can shift from one year to the next, the three categories that were most important this year were corporate governance, products and services, and innovation. “In the court of public opinion, Wells Fargo is the poster child for bad behavior,” Reputation Institute VP Stephen Hahn-Griffiths said, calling the actions of some employees to create fake accounts to meet sales targets “an egregious act.” But the overall industry produced better scores because of what’s believed to be generally better behavior by most institutions, better delivery of products and services and looser lending practices. It’s also believed some anti- consumer practices such as processing transactions in a way that would more quickly trigger overdrafts have been cut back, and many banks are making their community activities more prominent, certainly activities that can be highlighted via television. Hahn-Griffiths said he believes that banks that embrace transparency and fairness will find those to be the real differentiator over the next couple of years. ADVERTISER NEWS J.C. Penney has said it was successful in bringing back appliance departments in its stores and now will roll out toy departments to all stores in time for the holiday season. Inside stores an employee will be designated as a “Back-to-School helper” to assist in- store shoppers and B-T-S items are being added to the grocery pickup capabilities currently available at more than 800 locations……Quoting data from the National Retail Federation, This Week In Consumer Electronics says there should be a 6.4% increase in B-T-S electronics spending this year, especially from families with college students (expected to be up 11%)……Acquisition-minded c-store owner Alimentation Couche-Tard reported U.S. same store merchandise sales at its stores (mostly the Circle K banner) were up 1.6% in its latest fiscal quarter with fuel volume up 1.7%......In its “State of the Industry” report for beer, Beverage Industry magazine notes total beer volume was down slightly last year, although imports benefited from better price points and “premiumization.” But although craft beers have been increasing their share, they’re also seeing a deceleration in dollar sales. One analyst said of craft beers, “Consumer fatigue and confusion have begun to take hold in the category. There have been too many brands entering the marketplace in too short of a period of time.”

NETWORK NEWS Chicago P.D. star Jon Seda, who left the NBC cop drama midway through this past season to join Chicago Justice, will be returning to Chicago P.D. next season as a series regular. Seda will reprise his role as Antonio Dawson. The speculation that Seda would return to Chicago P.D. started after the network canceled the newest series in Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise after a 13-episode first-season run. Seda’s move mirrors a similar move for The Blacklist original cast member Ryan Eggold. He’ll rejoin the original NBC series now that the spinoff, The Blacklist: Redemption, was canceled after a brief midseason run. Daniel Henney of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is moving to the original Criminal Minds after the cancelation of that spinoff……NBC’s This Is Us broke a six-year drought by picking up an Emmy nomination for the season’s best drama series. The last broadcast network series nominated in that category was CBS’ The Good Wife in 2011. This Is Us got 11 total nominations. Fox’s Gordon Ramsey of MasterChef picked up his first ever Emmy nomination in the new reality host category. Alec Baldwin was nominated in the same category for ABC’s Match Game. Baldwin was also nominated for his portrayal of President Donald Trump on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. For the first time since 2006, Dancing with the Stars failed to get nominated in the Best Reality-Competition Series category. The ABC dance competition show was replaced in the category by VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert got the Emmy nomination in the Variety Talk Series category, but the list does not include a nomination for NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. ……Michael Rauch, the executive producer, and showrunner of the new CBS series Instinct, has signed a new development deal with CBS Studios, the same studio producing the new fall drama. Under the agreement, Rauch will develop new projects for the studio in addition to his duties on Instinct. The series is based on a new book by James Patterson and will star Alan Cumming as a former CIA operative pulled back into his old life to assist the NYPD in stopping a serial killer on the loose……Blake McCormick (Cougar Town) has closed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox. McCormick joins the new Fox paranormal comedy series Ghosted as co-executive producer and will develop new projects. McCormick’s first writing job was on the animated comedy King of the Hill.

ECONOMIC NEWS Retail sales for June as reported by the Commerce Department were 2.8% better than they had been in June, 2016, but were actually down 0.2% from May. Most retail segments slipped, including department stores, restaurants, grocery stores and clothing stores. Furniture was reported to be up, but just modestly. The Wall Street Journal reported much of the problem came from weak pricing, with the Labor Department’s broad measure of consumer prices up just 1.6% compared to the previous year. BUSINESS BYTES Through the end of May, the average automotive dealership has spent $242,268 in advertising, 10.1% more than in the first five months of 2016, according to data from the National Automobile Dealers Association. That amounts to 8.5% of the dealership’s gross and is $649 per new vehicle retailed on average. The average domestic vehicle dealership is spending less than the average foreign brand dealership, $205,878 for the former and $271,026 for the latter. The average “mass-market” brand dealer has spent $241,587 ($634 per new vehicle retailed) while the average luxury brand dealer has spent about the same in total ($247,752), although that’s $776 per new vehicle retailed on a generally smaller number of sales. There were both positives and negatives from the latest Restaurant Industry Snapshot, which collects results from more than 28,000 restaurants of over 155 brands nationally. On the downside, Same-store sales and traffic were off again last month and for the full second quarter, the sixth consecutive negative quarter for the industry. But the positive news was that the June numbers were the best for the industry since January and the quarter was the best since last year’s second quarter. Same-store sales were down 1% for the full quarter (the first quarter had been down 1.6%), while the same-store traffic decline of 3.1% for the quarter was significantly better than the 3.7% decline in the first quarter. The average check was up 2.2%, the same rate as the first quarter. Research director Victor Fernandez commented, “Brands seem to be reluctant to implement significant price increases, given the current environment. Price promotions have been widely utilized, especially by struggling brands and segments to drive traffic.”

AT&T TO CHANGE IF GETS TIME WARNER We still don’t know if AT&T will get government approval for its hoped-for acquisition of Time Warner, but The Wall Street Journal, quoting “people familiar with the matter,” says the company is planning to restructure if it does get the green light. The plan would be to create two distinct divisions, one to handle its core wireless business plus Di-recTV, and the other to manage Time Warner’s assets in-cluding Warner Brothers, Turner Broadcasting and HBO. The structure would be similar to Comcast, which had two divisions set up—one for the cable business and the other for NBCUniversal assets. Although there are still many hurdles to clear, AT&T continues to say it expects the deal to be approved and close before the end of the year.

UPFRONTS OVER. A WIN FOR TV? Variety analyzed the upfronts last week and concluded, “Advertisers are rushing back to TV because they don’t think they have anywhere else to go.” The five English-language broadcast networks got a 3% to 4% gain in the volume of advance advertising commitments for their next cycle of primetime programming, according to Variety estimates. The networks secured between $8.69 billion and $9.55 billion, compared with between $8.41 billion and $9.25 billion in 2016 – possibly marking the most they’ve gleaned since six broadcast networks – the WB and

UPN were still around, in place of CW – secured around $9.5 billion in 2004. Ad buyers and network execs suggested some the new dollars came as the result of big advertisers moving money normally earmarked for the “scatter” market, out of fear of not being able to get the ad time they need later on. Even though digital remains in the spotlight, TV could have more appeal, not less, in these shifting times. Madison Avenue continues to fret over

the viability of new digital media. Google’s YouTube has aligned commercials from conservative sponsors with content that is more risqué than they stuff they prefer to support. Facebook and other social and web outlets have had trouble with measuring the effectiveness of some types of video advertising. So Variety says many of the big media companies saw interest in their digital wares rise this year. At Disney/ABC Television, advertisers were said to spend 20% more on digital inventory. Fox Networks Group saw spending on digital ads and ads for new kinds of viewing experiences rise 40%. NBCUniversal saw spending on digital video advertising was up 42%. The takeaway is that TV-screen content is more trusted than something thrown up quickly on a streaming-video service hoping to compete.

SAG AFTRA CONTRACT AFFIRMED SAG-AFTRA has approved the successor deal for a new three-year master contract for primetime TV and feature films, triggering a ratification vote by members. The contract was approved by 77.4% of the board Saturday. The union has touted “significant” improvements in the residuals rate paid to performers for exhibition of their performances on streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon.
