February 26, 2019, Allentown, PA - International Women’s Day (IWD) is recognized each year on March 8th. The day celebrates the achievements of women and girls and calls for gender equality. To commemorate, the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce (GLVCC) Women’s Business Council (WBC), in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the African American Business Leaders Council, will host the second Multicultural Women in Leadership panel. The event will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 11 AM - 1 PM at Coordinated Health, 3435 Winchester Road, Allentown, PA. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple to the event, the official color of the IWD movement. The discussion will highlight female leadership. Topics such as how to become inspired, the importance of planning, facing challenges and disappointments, and the benefit of mentors will be explored. The multicultural panel includes Dr. Acevedo-Santiago, Staff Physiatrist at Good Shep- herd Rehabilitation Network; Luz Colon, Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission for Latino Affairs; Gail W. Boyd, Esq., President, Gail Boyd Artist Management / Co-Founder Van- guard Arts; Dr. Diep Nguyen, Endocrinologist, Coordinated Health; and Magisterial District Judge Nancy Matos Gonzalez, who was the first elected Hispanic Magisterial District Judge in the State of Pennsylvania. Danielle Adams, CEO/Chief Empowerment Officer, QueenSuite Coach, will moderate the conversation. This year’s IWD campaign theme is #BalanceforBetter, building a gender-balanced world. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. According to the World Economic Forum survey of 144 countries, they found that the gender gap is widening for the first time since 2006. Based on 2016 figures, U.S. women with full-time jobs still only earn 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man. African American women earn 63 cents and Hispanic, and Latina women earn 54 cents for every dollar earned by men. International Women’s Day was founded by the Suffragettes in the early 1900s. They fought for the right to vote in public elections (aka, women’s suffrage). Now centuries later, IWD is a powerful platform that unifies tenacity and drives action for gender parity, while also celebrating the social, economic, and political achievements of women. Along with wearing purple to signal solidarity, attendees are encouraged to support the WBC event beneficiaries: Girl Scouts of Eastern PA and The Literacy Center. Bangor High School Earns Awards At Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science By Michael Ortoski

BETHLEHEM - The Bangor Area School District is extremely proud to announce that all ten of the District’s high school participants recently earned top awards at the local Pennsylvania Junior Acad-emy of Science Regional Symposium held at Northampton Community College on Saturday, Febru-ary 21, 2019. The students presented primary research projects detailing scientific investigations pursued over the course of the fall semester in the Elements of Scientific Research Course taught by Mr. Robert Hatchman. Three high school students – Rachel Kramer, Nicola Kaye, and Grace Dough-erty, earned perfect scores.

As a result of our students’ local success, they are invited to participate in the State Competition of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS), which will be held from May 19 through 21, 2019, at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park. Approximately 3,000 of the best and brightest science students from Pennsylvania’s twelve separate PJAS regions will descend upon State College to present their research.

Each of these students will also be competing at the Lehigh Valley Science and Engineering Research Fair held at Lehigh University on March 16 along with seniors Kevin Manz and Doug Toth. Gulnur Avci, Havyn Steele and Rachel Kromer will also present at the state competition for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in March.

By Michael OrtoskiEASTON - This week State

Rep. Joe Emrick and Taylor Munoz from Senator Scavel-lo’s office joined members of Troop 44, community officials and friends to honor Ryan Weiss for receiving the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Ryan completed a number of improvements to a pollination garden for the City of Easton’s Urban Forestry Program. Many individuals commended Ryan for his cheerful attitude and the light he has brought to his Troop. “Congratulations Ryan on your accomplishment and we wish you much success in all you do” said Emrick.
