About Us:
Steel Scenario Journal an international journal for steel and allied industry since 1991. The journal started
with the mission to fill the gap on availability of information, market scenario and demand of various steel
products in India. With nearly three decades of service to steel and allied sector as well as a close
association with various user segment organisations and government departments globally, Steel
Scenario has been growing and going strong with every passing years. Steel Scenario Journal not only
publishes an important compendium of monthly issue with articles connected to steel production,
technological development, steel market and demand along with interviews, product analysis and
relevant data and statistics, but also oprganises regular Seminars and Workshops concerning steel usage,
awareness among end users and increase in consumption of steel.
Background of Bangladesh Steel Industry:
Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world vastly outperforming global steel industry growth.
The Government of Bangladesh has projected the economy to grow by 8.2% in FY2020. Meanwhile, Asian
Development Bank (ADB) has also forecasted the economy to grow by 8.0% in FY2020, which makes
Bangladesh as the fastest growing economy in Asia Pacific region. According to industry experts, there is a
linkage between a country's economic growth and growth in steel consumption. If GDP is expected to
grow by 8%, steel industry should grow by at least 16% per year. According to a report by EBL Securities, is
set to achieve double digit growth for the next 2 decades.
The demand for steel in Bangladesh is mainly driven by infrastructure projects in commercial, housing,
and public sector. The public sector can be further broken down to implementation of the government's
annual development plans and infrastructure projects. It's estimated that the sector turns over around
$3.6bn every year.
In Bangladesh, there is no integrated mills(based on blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace method) for
producing steel products. Steel millers here rely on electric arc and induction furnaces to process the scrap
and adds value by transforming them into finished steels. Currently there are around 300 steel mills,
among them there are 150 re-rolling mills and 30 auto steel mills in the country and rest of the millers
produce steel through conventional process of re-rolling ship cutting plates, according to industry
personnel.
Background of the Seminar:
To make the steel industry of Bangladesh into a global hub of steel operations through creation of several
loops of steel making. For a small country like Bangladesh, we have to go in small steps because any
investments into steel capacity is likely to lead to a sudden outburst of supplies that overreach the
domestic demand. The movement towards a progressive national economy strongly depends on the how
construction materials specially steels related industries have evolved and such products are readily
available. Fortunately, the country has a proud heritage for the art of steel making and shaping for a long
time. Bangladesh, one of Asia's emerging steel markets, has seen a rapid increase in its steel production
capacity throughout last few years, helping to drive raw material imports of ferrous scrap, pig iron and
direct-reduced iron (DRI) further.
Topics for Discussion:Use of Raw Materials
Technology Usage to reduce use of raw materials, energy, water, zero-waste and reducing CO 2
emission/carbon footprint
Showcasing of various products by the steel/pre fab producers
Requirement of End users
Logistic Prospects & Challenges
Bangladesh is climatically vulnerable and hence its emission standards are very stringent. The use of sponge iron instead of scrap is a dangerous step for two reasons. Firstly, the sponge iron gives off emissions and greenhouse gases and secondly, the quality of the iron is suspect. Sponge iron, most of which is being sourced from India is now well known for its declining quality and especially high phosphorous content and almost completely unsuited for uses in Bangladesh. Careful monitoring is needed to stall the use of sponge iron in the country, especially as the mills might be tempted to use this easily available and cheap source of input. So what's the way out. In this Session the experts will look forward for a solution to this problem
There are mainly two types of technology for producing steels based on the raw materials consumption: the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) technology(integrated) and electric furnace (EF) technology (recycled).Currently there are around 300 steel mills, among them there are 150 re-rolling mills and 30 auto steel mills in the country and rest of the millers produce steel through conventional process of re-rolling ship cutting plates, according to industry personnel. The world is on track to produce a staggering 1.6 billion tons of steel this year, used to construct everything from cars to skyscrapers. The environmental cost, though, is enormous: together, the iron and steel industries account for 5% of the planet's total carbon emissions. That's why researchers are racing to find a practical way to produce steel with less waste. In this Session experts and industry players will discuss on ways to reduce use of raw materials, energy to maximise the profit.
The last decade witnessed transformation of Bangladesh Steel Industry from nongraded to graded and specialized steels in at least 5 high quality grades. Leading manufacturers started to compete by introducing graded steels since 2008. Meanwhile, industries are also changing technology from traditional manual to auto-rolling and semi-auto re rolling mills. With the local production of high quality graded steels, dependency on imported steels for large infrastructural projects has almost eliminated and the country became self reliant in producing quality steel products. So, in this Session, the various producers will get a chance to project their specialised products for various projects.
While the country has been experiencing one of the fastest economic growth in the
world, its per capita consumption of steel is significantly lower than the global standard. The sector is expected to grow further driven by the increasing purchasing power and ongoing infrastructural developments by both public and private sector of the country. The demand for steel industry is mainly driven by two factor; one is the implementation of the government's ADP plans and government's infrastructure building activities and the other is from the industrial and individual level demand especially from the real estate sector. So more usage of steel in
Bangladesh, having been ranked 100 in Logistics Performance Index (LPI). Since Bangladesh is at the critical juncture of inclusive trade and economic development momentum, the demand for a bespoke logistics facility is mounting. Development of transport infrastructure and warehousing services supporting EXIM trade is required. Government needs to invest in creating transport infrastructure that will improve regional connectivity and lead to gradual concentration of warehousing sector. New and modern warehousing infrastructure should be developed in line with other developing countries.
