Balance- principle of design
A balanced composition or design is one where the visual weights of all the elements are equally distributed.
Balance-principle of designGorzycki MS Art Gorzycki Middle SchoolWhen do you think about Balance?
And in Design!!!!!! Symmetrical balance
Gorzycki Middle SchoolSymmetrical BalanceSymmetrical balance occurs when visual elements are mirrored from side to side or top to bottom. When symmetry occurs with similar, but not identical, forms it is called approximate or formal symmetry.

Asymmetrical balance
Gorzycki Middle SchoolAsymmetrical BalanceAsymmetrical balance occurs when the weight of a composition is not exactly mirrored, yet still achieves a sense of harmony in the design.
Often there is one dominant form that is offset by many smaller forms.
In general, asymmetrical compositions tend to have a greater sense of visual tension.
Asymmetrical balance is also known as informal balance.Gorzycki Middle School
Radial balance
Gorzycki Middle SchoolRadial BalanceElements of a design radiate from a central focal point in a balanced, almost circular scheme.
The central point does not have to be in the dead center of the design. Radial balance is used infrequently.Gorzycki Middle School
Mandala
Millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks before ultimately being dismantled in order to release and disseminate the deity's blessings into the worldMillions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of days or weeks before ultimately being dismantled in order to release and disseminate the deity's blessings into the world
The designs are made fromTibetan images that includes geometric shapes and a multitude of historical Buddhist spiritual symbols. he sand-painted mandala is used as a tool for consecrating, or blessing, the earth and its inhabitants, and provides for the practitioner a visual framework for establishing the enlightened mind of the Buddha
What type of Balance do the Tibetan Monks use in their Mandalas?Symmetrical
Asymmetrical
Radial

Your project:
Find a saying or word that is inspirational to you. (mine: Dream it!)
Select an established font to use. ( I used the Disney font) Draw it to completely fill the triangle. (more on creating the triangles later)Trace with ebony pencil and rub to transfer to create a radially balanced design using the symbols of american writing to create a mandalaOutline with sharpie, erase smudgesSelect a color scheme, use prisma colors to color each triangle identically.
