Integrity is the character trait for May and June.

Integrity means making choices that help you be the

best person you can be. You can show integrity by

doing what you think is right, even when others around

you are making poor choices.

Our students are looking forward to learning about a

variety of careers during our Career Day on Friday,

May 13th. Thank you to all of our parents and

community members who are volunteering their time to

come in and share about their careers.

Our last iMom Breakfast will be held on Wednesday,

May 4th

and our last All Pro Dad Breakfast will be

held on Wednesday, June 1st. Both will be held at

8:15 in the cafeteria. Hope to see you there!

Congratulations to our Students of the Month for the

April character trait of Cooperation.

Summer Safety tips!

Teach your children swimming in open water isn't the same as swimming in a

pool. Be aware of uneven surfaces

under the water, river current, and undertows.

Never swim or play near drain or suction outlets. Hot tubs, public

wading pools or pools that have a flat

drain grates or a single main draining pose the greatest risk.

Never swim alone. Make sure life jackets fit

properly. Have your child raise both arms straight above his/her head, if the

life jacket hits the chin or ears it may

be too big or the straps are too loose. Wear a life jacket that is approved by

the US Coast Guard. Wear a helmet when biking or

skating. Helmets decrease the risk of

brain injury by 88% yet only 45% of children 14 years and under wear

helmets.

Pedestrian injuries are the 5th leading of cause of injury related deaths in the

US for 5-19 year olds. Teach your

children to walk on sidewalks or paths, put down electronic devices, cross at

street corners, and look right left and then right again before crossing the

street. And don’t forget your sunscreen!!!

Pre-K It's hard to believe the end of the school

year is upon us. I am so proud of every one of my Pre-K students as they have made significant progress since they started Pre-K. We have learned so much in our themes: School, Trees, Clothes, Buildings, Recycle, and Balls.

Academically, we have learned all upper and lower case letters, letter sounds, as well as number names 0-31, 2D and 3D shape names, creating sets to 10, subtilizing, and counting to 31+, just to name a few. We have read some very awesome literature (stories) that the children talk about and ask for them to be read over and over. All of this leads to new vocabulary that the children now use.

Please use the summer time to refresh and have them go over letter name sounds, and numbers every other day to have them mastered so they are ready for Kindergarten.

I hope to see you at our "Time to Shine" on May 24th. I will be sending out an RSVP form for you next week. I will be having a "picture diary" (like a slide show presentation) of our year, as well as the folders of paper work I have been saving for the children to go over with you during your visit. It is my goal to have every child have a representative for this very important time. The children will remember this always.

As I said, I am so very proud of the children. Honestly, I couldn't say that enough! They are wonderful children and you have done an excellent job raising them. It has been a real pleasure working with the children. I will truly miss them. Have a great and safe summer!

Kindergarten As the school year comes to a close, we

begin to reflect on how much our kindergarteners have grown. I hope that you have seen the same leaps and bounds that we have! We are going to miss our kiddos from this year so much but it will be so fun to see them in years to come! We have a lot of fun things happening during the end of the year, including the Spring Concert and Fun and

Fitness Day! Our classroom chickens will be heading to their forever homes on farms in the county. We had such a wonderful time watching them grow! Make sure to continue checking your child's folder for all of the important information that we will be sending home in the next few weeks. Keep practicing tying those shoes; your first grade teachers will really appreciate it! Over the summer, don't forget to continue practicing reading your sight words and sounding our words to write down the sounds you hear. We hope you have an amazing summer!

1st Grade Warm weather… wahoo!! With this beautiful

weather come many new reminders from the 1st grade team.

First, please remember not to send students to school in flip-flops!! It is extremely difficult and unsafe for them to be engaging in recess with these on. If your child chooses to wear stylish (and school appropriate) sandals… please send them with tennis shoes to change into for recess! We appreciate your help.

Second, Fun and Fitness Day will be here soon! Some things to keep in mind for this day are student attire, sunscreen, and water. First grade will have a specific color shirt to wear… this will be announced soon! Please, please, please make sure our kiddos have sunscreen on. It is a long and hot day… sunscreen is a must!! Dress them ready to play with plenty of water to stay hydrated!!

Finally, 1st grade will be headed to our last field trip of the year on May 27th. Students will be applying their knowledge of resources being used to create goods as we see the Turkey Hill Experience! Students will see the all the resources and steps necessary to create the yummy good of ICE CREAM! All slips and payments must be signed and returned by FRIDAY, MAY 20! If allergies are a concern, your classroom teacher will contact you!

There really are no words to express how quickly this year has flown by!! We are so proud of our first graders. Their growth is astounding!! We are so sad to see them go, but looking forward to seeing them excel in 2nd grade!

2nd Grade

Wow! It is so hard to believe the end of the

school year has already come! We have so many fun things planned for the time we have left with our students! On May 9th students will be able to enjoy a mobile Science lab that is coming to school to do a “Bug Out” activity with us! The following week, on May 18th (weather permitting), we will have a fun filled Fun and Fitness Day!

Academically, the 2nd grade teachers are working hard to maintain our regular schedule in order to keep consistency as students get more and more excited for the approaching summer vacation. It is important for them to continue to complete their homework each night and to be on time to school each day! Students will spend the rest of the year learning new skills and concepts that will be preparing them to be successful third graders! This summer we are asking that you continue to work on addition and subtraction facts and read each day with your child. It is crucial to your child’s ongoing success that they only become more fluent in these areas, and practice makes perfect! Thank you for all you have done at home this year to support your child’s education and we are looking forward to wrapping up another successful school year!

3rd Grade A special thank you, to all who were able to

make it to our Salute to Learning Celebration. We were so excited to see such a great turnout. The kids truly enjoyed celebrating their work and goals. There were smiles all around.

We have been reading fables and learning about lessons and points of view. In the coming weeks we will discuss points of view while reading informational text and compare and contrast texts on the same topic. Much of the informational reading will be done during science and social studies as we study economics and rocks and minerals.

Students have been learning about quadrilaterals. They should be able to tell you about the attributes of quadrilaterals and which quadrilaterals share the same attributes. We are

Page 5: Bainbridge Express News - Cecil County Public Schoolsschools.ccps.org/bain/PDF/Newsletters/Webster May-June 2016 (3).pdf · All of this leads to new vocabulary ... don't forget to

also learning about perimeter and reviewing area. The 4th marking period is a time to build on all that has been studied this year in math. We will study economics in social studies. Our focus will be on spending and saving as well as starting a business. Students will put all this information together to start their own business. They will need to decide if they would like to sell a good or a service and how much it will cost. They will set up this business in the cafeteria, after paying “rent” to the teacher. The 3rd graders love this activity. We will send home more information in the coming weeks. In science we are studying rocks and minerals. The students will read about the properties of various rocks and minerals and will try to match the rock or mineral to its name. Our trip to the White Clay Creek State Park is on May 26. Keep a look out for the permission slips, as they will be coming home soon. Please send them back as soon as possible so we can finalize all costs. We will also be going to Fair Hill Nature Center at the beginning of May. Those permission slips will be coming home as well.

We cannot believe that the last marking period is upon us and the end of the year is quickly approaching. We are so proud of the progress the 3rd graders have shown this year. Thank you so much for your help and support in making this happen.

4th Grade Hard to believe that we are finishing our

fourth grade school year already! In our last two months of school, our Math

focus will shift to geometry. Students will be learning about the attributes of different geometric figures and shapes. We will continue to work on problem-solving skills and real life situations.

In ELA, we are still working on looking at different perspectives and different points of view in writing. We will be studying the Titanic, and learning about it from a variety of text and digital resources. Students will be working on a writing assignment that asks them to develop their own opinion about Titanic artifacts and what should be done with them. Students will then write about

their opinion and work on supporting their opinion with research they’ve conducted. In the past we have found that there is a high level of interest surrounding the Titanic, so it will be an exciting way to end our school year!

Social Studies have us delving into the economy of Maryland and understanding how people get the goods and services they want and need. We will discuss human, natural and capital resources, as well as investigate how our county contributes to Maryland’s economy.

The fourth marking period’s science focus is Electricity! Students will become electrical engineers, designing and building their own electrical circuits.

We would like to once again thank you all for your support of your students throughout the school year. We wish you all a safe and happy summer!

5th Grade We can hardly believe that the year is

almost over and the fifth graders will soon be heading to middle school!

In Math, we will be finishing up our 4th unit entitled Measurement and Data. The students will be engaged in various activities to gain a deeper understanding of volume, geometric figures and conversions of measurements. The students will be expected to apply this new knowledge to real world problem-solving situations.

During Reading, we are finishing up our story George’s Secret Key to the Universe and practicing such skills as comparing and contrasting characters and events and summarizing important parts of a text. We are also working on writing our own science fiction narrative focusing on various writing strategies including figurative language, precise verbs, sensory details and dialogue.

In Social Studies, we are exploring the events of the American Revolution and how it helped to form our nation, especially the formation of our government. In Science, we are finishing up the unit “Our Space System” by exploring the various patterns we notice in our space system including moon phases and constellations.
