Betty Shabazz summer camp called Camp Cul-Tech created a new project. This year Camp Cul-Tech talked about things that used wind like airplanes, helicopters, and blimps, so they decided to build a windmill.

A windmill is a machine that is powered by the energy of the wind. Windmills aren’t made to just make air. Windmills are used to grind wheat into flour, generate electricity, save energy, and pumping water by harnessing the power of the wind. They are designed to convert the energy of the wind into more useful forms using rotating blades or sails.

It took us three months to build our windmill. We drew a sketch of the windmill as our plan. Then we went to a hardware store and bought pipes, needles, wood, screwdrivers, drills, saws, rulers, yardsticks, red paint, blue paint, green paint, and purple paint.

Some of the pipes were too long and tall, so we cut a few pieces to make them shorter. We drilled the needles at the top of the pipes together, separated the bottom part of the pipes, and we drilled smaller pipes to the sides of the windmill to keep it balanced. Some of them were drilled vertically.

We built the blades using

wood, medium-sized pipes, and curving 90 degree pipes to connect the medium-sized pipes. Then, we drilled another pipe to the top of the windmill, and attached the blades onto the windmill. Finally, we painted the windmill on each side using each different color and we were finished.

With the team’s help, building the windmill was a success. Everybody participated and got an award. As a camper, I participated in the project. It was hard, but it was fun.

By: Nanyamka Gallardo Skittles taste good but are not healthy, they have 250 calories and you should only have 2500 a day. It might not seem like a lot, but it is. Skittles have 25 grams of saturated fat and 47 grams of sugar.

Skittles have pork in them and some pork has worms in it, so it is not healthy. All that sugar and fat just is not good for you. Instead of all of that sugar and fats you should sit down and have a piece of fruit, it taste just as good as Skittles. Fruit is even

better than Skittles. If you just have to have something sugary just eat a Nestle crunch bar, Kit Kat bar, or York peppermint pattie.

Other candies that you should avoid are Reese’s pieces, Twizzler pull n peel cherry, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, Twix cookie bar, and Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar. They taste very good, but are not healthy for your body.

So be smart about the foods you eat and make sure you have the right portion! Information from about what you eat.

SWEET BUT NOT HEALTHY

MessageINFLUENCE IN THE MUSIC

rappers are talking about having sex with a girl, fighting, and killing people. Even women are talking like this such as Lil’kim. I mean women, don’t you find this disrespectful??!! For example, read T-Pain’s lyrics to “I’mma buy u a drank”:

I’mma Buy You A

DrankThen I’mma Take

You Home With MeI Got Money In The

BankShawty What you

Think ‘Bout That?Find Me In The

Grey CadillacWe In The Bed LikeOoh Ooh Oh, Ooh

OohWe In The Bed LikeOoh Ooh Ooh, Ooh

Ooh.

This gets into peo-ples head and they follow it and do stu-pid stuff.

People, we have to stop the madness, so

be careful of what you listen to because it gets into your head and soon you act like it!!!

There are positive artists you should listen to like Earth, Wind, and Fire or

By Nersa Backstrom

Before the nasty rap music, did you see black people killing each other? People were scared of getting beaten or killed by white people! Now, we are beating and killing each oth-er. Why are we doing this? Is it because people owe us money? People, are we going to let dirty mouth rappers lead our race to extinction? I don’t think so…not in this life-time!

Rappers such

as Lil’ Wayne, T-pain, Birdman, Jay-Z, and 50 cent are rappers that are short-ening our life span. People are listening to the wrong music and some people are dying because of it. For example, lyrics like: “Most likely I’m gonna die with my finger on the trigger”

Then, women are getting pregnant at a young age and can’t take care of their baby’s health or school work because

Allcia Keys and more people like that. Even the songs about love that have a positive message like “Ghetto Heaven,“ a song by Common:

Love, your happiness don’t begin wit a manStrong woman, why should you depend on a manI understand you want a man that’s resourcefulIf he pays your bills, he feels like he bought youTalkin to a friend, about what love isHer man didn’t love her, cuz he didn’t love hisHugged her from afar, said what I feltYou never find a man, till you find your-selfTime helps mistakes, you can learn fromCuz one man skrewed up, men you shouldn’t turn from

You want a certain type of guy, gotta reach a certain point tooAt the destination, a king will annoint youGoin through the storm, anybody seems warmThat relationship died, for you to be born, you’re worth moreThan anything you could cop in a storeFor you to grow he had to go so what you stoppin him for?Not even I could ignore being alone it’s hardFind heaven in yourself and God

This song is about love and with a positive message. I hope I’m getting thought to you people. What I’m trying to say is that some times the bad message gets in your head and you do the stupid stuff so please change the world by not listening to this type of music…..thank

VelocityBy: Haki Wright

Fans have been anticipating the new band, Velocity. If you love Fall Out Boy, Coldplay, Panic! At The Disco, Maroon 5, and The Strokes, Velocity will blow you away.

Velocity is a pop, punk, rock, and alternative band from Chicago, Illinois, that formed in 2008. The band consists of Nersa Backstrom (lead vocals, bass guitar), Najee Wright (lead guitar), Malik Ismael (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Haki Wright (Drums, Percussion, backing vocals, secondary lyricist), Kamau Haymond (rhythm guitar and primary lyricist), and Yvonne Cole-man (lead vocals number two). They are so young yet so talented (That was a joke so laugh).

They are currently making their first song, "Mystery Girl." "It's about any girl that you (fans) want it to be", says Nersa. The members of Velocity have different people that they like, so they didn't talk about one girl. They're talk-ing about anyone. They are also play-ing gigs on special occasions such as

holidays, birth-day parties, etc.

We have yet to find out when they will make their first album and go on tour.

Miracle at Mal*WartBy Sarah Honesty

“HEY KIDS LISTEN TO THE STORY OF HOW I MET MY GOOD FRIEND MARTIN!!!!” yelled James from the bottom of the stairs trying to get the atten-tion of his grandchildren Marcus and Jonathan.

The children rushed down the stairs yelling “Grandpa again with this story!”

“Hey, be quiet while I talk” James said.

“It was a warm Fall day in Mittle Dock, Darkental. People rushed into Mal Wart to get food for Thanksgiving dinner, which was the next day. Outside of Mal Mart, there were hundreds of peo-ple running frantically in and out of the store. Cars were lined up to get into the parking lot from the street and there was traf-fic everywhere. In front of the store, two people were fighting over the last shopping cart yell-ing “IT’S MY CART!” “NO! IT’S MY CART!”

As a crowd gathered chaotically, a homeless man quickly approached the corner in ragged clothes, nappy hair, and dirt on his face, yell-ing, “Does anyone have

some spare change!?” The strug-gle for the last cart went on for about a good fifteen minutes un-til someone called the police and they came and broke it up. Just then, a well dressed man walked out with a cart full of groceries. He seemed to be in a rush as the homeless man came up and said, “Spare some change for a home-less man to take a sho-”

“James is that you? It’s me Martin from Jackson street. Don’t you remember me?” said the well dressed man.

“I don’t know you! All I want is some danged change!”

“Don’t you remember me from

James Albert High School? We put butter on the staff toilet seat and Mr. Vorez fell in and got stuck in there and it took 4 ambu-lances to get him out and he took the toilet off of the ground with him and we didn’t have to go to biology class for a week while he got the toilet removed. We were best friends until we were about 18 years old until you and me had to go our separate ways to go to college an... and... We met when we were four a- WHAT IS THAT SMELL!?!?!?!”

“It’s me I need a stinking show-er!!” yelled James loudly. Martin began to laugh. “Why are you laughing? There is nothing funny about that,” said James very an-grily.

Page 15: Backpack News 1

“No it’s just the irony that you smell really bad and you just said, ‘stinking shower.’”

“Only my old friend Martin Shai would say something as smart but dumb, silly but serious, and that lame.”

“Lame but what?” asked Mar-tin.

“Nothing just plain lame,” said James.

“Oh that just plain hurts!” said Martin.

“Martin? It is really you!!”

“I told you I was me but you didn’t believe me, did you?” Asked Martin.

“No, I didn’t believe you,” he said mockingly. “So what brings you back to little ol’ Mittle Dock, Darkental?” asked James curi-ously.

“Oh I just came in from Canada for Thanksgiving at Gramma Car-ols house. But enough about me, what happened to you?” Martin asked shocked at the appearance of his old friend.

“Oh, I got kicked out of col-lege for smoking pot after I told them I had gone clean and then I got a job at the post office as a delivery man but then I burned down one of the people’s house because he threw peanuts at my face and I got fired. But I guess

what goes around comes around. Then my house got burned down a few years back by my psycho girlfriend because I didn’t want to marry her so she packed her stuff, burned my stuff and ran off. Then about 3 or 4 weeks lat-er I came home from visiting my mothers house ready to lay down and I pull up to my house and it was on fire and my mother had a heart attack when she heard about it and died so then I didn’t have a place to stay so I stayed on the streets for about 5 years. So that’s my story, what’s up with you Mr. Successful?” James asked.

“Well... after high school I went to Tokyo for college were I got medical doctors degree then I went to Canada home of the Ca-nadian bacon which is really just our ham but then about two years later I got married to Lida Swis-ter and now have two kids named Khleo and Raven, yeah so that’s my life.”

“Sounds like a pretty awe-

some life” said James sounding ashamed and sad. “Well I best be getting to the homeless shelter before it’s full.”

“WAIT JAMES! I think I can get you a job if you’re willing to earn a few bucks and get off of the streets for a while and get your stinking shower.” Martin said. “Well what job is it and how much does it pay?” asked James excitedly

“Well it pays a good $7.00 an hour and it’s downtown work-ing in an office making stamps. It’s just a temporary job until you have enough money to get your life back on track and get your house back and start a family like I did.” said Martin shyly.

“I’d love that job.” said James excitedly

“ Great! meet me at 2843 S. Lafysimo at 7:30 sharp on Mon-day so I can get you into a shower and some clean clothes for your interview got it.” said Martin

15

Page 16: Backpack News 1

“Got it Martin. By the way do you have a place for me to get something to eat and a place to crash for the night because us talking got in the way of me get-ting my usual place in the shelter for today.” said James

“Sure you can crash at my place tonight so you can be really pre-pared for your job interview in a few days, sound good? said Mar-tin

“Sounds good” said James in a reassuring voice.

“Okay if your ready to go I can call my wife tell ‘er I’m bringing a friend over for a few days and then we’ll be set to go.” Said Martin.

“Cool” said James with joy in his voice.

About an hour lat-

er the 2 men were at home with Lida hav-ing dinner.

“This is some good

food Mrs. Lida,” James said with his mouth filled with mashed potato’s.

“Why thank you

Mr. James,” Lida said in a polite voice.

“So Martin what

job did you get James?” Asked Lida.

“Oh, it’s just a job downtown making postage stamps.”

“Oh, what a nice job.”

“Wait grandpa are you talking about grandma Li-”

“DON’T INTERRUPT BOY! YOU AIN’T TALKED THROUGH THIS WHOLE STORY, DON’T START NOW...GEEZ, KIDS THESE DAYS.”

“Sorry grandpa.” said Jona-

than.”

“WELL SINCE YALL WANT TO INTERRUPT AND OLD MAN WHILE HE’S TELLING A STORY YALL CAN READ THE REST OF THE STORY BOOK YA SELVES! PLUS I GOTTA RUN. Gotta get to work on time. Well anyways this is how I changed my life around for the better. From a drug addict hobo to a successful foreign car sales-man. Well see you later.”

My Moral

By Sunankhem Kheperu

she is," he yelled down the blue and green hall where children stood at their lockers. Nyah then had enough of Danny teasing her, and got so an-gry that she rudly broke loose on ev-ery body that talked to her. “Hi Nyah,” said Clair, "I haven’t

seen you since class. "Nyah said loudly “Well I see you

every day, so what's the point of be-ing such a hello girl? Why do you al-ways have to say hello?" said Nyah. After school that day Nyah went

back into Mama Ellie's room, "Have you been practicing your reading"? Mama Ellie asked.Nyah was still so upset from earlier

that she could not even hold in her anger for Mama Ellie.

Nyah said loudly, "Could you just give me a little credit for being myself and not liking to read?"Nyah knew that she was

going to get in trouble so she ran out the class, down the stairs and past a bunch of kids. Nyah ran out the door and down

......Hello my name is Nyah and this is

what happened to me last Monday and Tuesday.

"You are very smart, Nyah, but you would exceed in reading if you just try," said Nyah's teacher Mama El-lie as Nyah looked down at her desk. Nyah figured that since she was in the fifth grade that grades didn't re-ally matter if she was well behaved. Nyah started to understand what her teacher said after she thought about it for a couple of minutes on her way out the class.Nyah went to her locker and saw her

friend Clair and told her about what happened with Mama Ellie. Nyah's worst enemy, Dan-ny, heard about what happened from his locker four lockers away from Nyah's. Dan-ny started to tease her right away."Nyah is not as

smart as you think

the ramp so no one could catch up to her. Nyah ran through the empty lot through the big field with the cam-paign billboard with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Nyah thought of how her

mom was preparing to vote for Ba-rack. She ran past Mrs. Alson's house down the Miller Hill and through the Fantom park. When Nyah got home, her mom was standing at the door looking angry. The first thing her mom said was,

"Guess what Nyah, I got a call from Mama Ellie today. She said you were very disrespectful to her

today" she said calmly, tapping her foot. "You know I am very angry with you because you are born from a family with three children raised finely and I want everybody to be-lieve that and I want to keep it that way. Without a father you have all the love you can get still," she said with her foot still tapping. Nyah's mother seemed to get more sensitive after talking about her child's father. Nyah seemed to start understanding because she started to nod her head. "So I want you to go back to school and apologize to Clair, Mama Ellie and Danny. And if you can't do that, then you are going to spend your whole summer babysitting Allison."Nyah hated the idea of having to

babysit a crying baby for the whole summer. The next day Nyah went back to

school and saw Clair at her locker. Nyah went up to Clair and said, "I am so sorry I was mad because of Mama Ellie and Danny. I would never yell at you in a million years even for a million dollars.” “I'm not mad at you,” said Clair. "I

actually know how you feel. You are really getting tired of Danny,” said Clair. They both started laughing at

the face that Nyah made. 18

Page 19: Backpack News 1

Next was Danny, said Nyah in her head, to get the pain over with.Nyah approached

Danny and said, "Well we do have our differ-ences and we should really leave each other alone". "Ok," said Danny, "I

can manage." Next was Mama Ellie

thought Nyah. Nyah went to up to

Mama Ellie and said, "I am sorry for the way I talked to you yesterday. Do you take my apol-ogy Mama Ellie?" "Yes Nyah. You

know you really shouldn't take your anger out on other people." "I know but I al-

ways hold in my anger because I am raised from a good family." "I understand,"

Said Mama Ellie. "Well it is time to

go and I am proud that you said sorry." "Thanks Mama Ellie"

said Nyah. Nyah walked through

the empty lot with a stray dog she called Taylor Boy. She told him to scatt at the end of the lot. Nyah skipped through the big field with her neighbor El-izza. Nyah ran through Mrs. Alson's yard. She

ran up and down the Miller Hill and through Fantom park and home.

As soon as Nyah got in the house her mom asked her if she did what was asked. Nyah said, "Yes ma'am.” "I am proud you under-

stand what was said". Nyah's mom pulled her close to hug her and said, "Thank you Nyah."
