Reach for the Stars• Your child brings home a yellow form nightly.• Each night the student records the number of PAGES
read.• Sixth grade students should read at least 30 minutes
per night, including weekends.• They also complete a 3-sentence summary of what
they read on a reading log.• Parents/Guardians sign the slip on Thursday night and
send it to school with your child on Friday.• Classrooms with the most minutes read win popcorn
parties monthly to encourage reading.
Weekly Folder• Students have an ORANGE poly folder that is
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.• This folder will come home on TUESDAY. • One side is papers you can look at and keep at home
(Keep at Home)• The other side contains any notes that need signed
and returned, as well as a weekly copy of your child’s grades. (Return to School)
• Each Tuesday, please sign the folder and the grades and send them back with your student on Wednesday.
MORE HOMEWORK!• District policy is that 6th graders should have 60
minutes of homework per night. • Included in this is the 30 minutes your student
should be reading for Reach for the Stars.• Also, every week, Monday-Thursday, students will
have a reading and math homework packet.• If you want additional information about
homework, please feel free to pick up an informational packet.
Copying Procedures
• In order to save resources, most information (including tonight’s information) can be found on our classroom’s web back pack, or will be sent via email. If you need paper copies, please let me know.
• Students will be given ONE copy of an assignment. After that, they may hand copy and write the assignment on notebook paper for credit.
PBiS• PBiS is our school-wide Positive Behavior System.
• PBiS has only one “rule”:– Follow the “Shawanoe Way” or PERKS– Productivity– Effort– Responsibility– Kindness– Safety
IN EVERY ENVIRONMENT– classroom, hallway, cafeteria, restrooms, and on the playground.
7
PBiS• Every student gets a “redirect” for not
following PERKS, which is like a warning. It always begins with “Can you…”
• When a student can NOT change their behavior, they are asked to move to the safe seat.
• When in the safe seat, students still participate in class and do everything they would normally do.
• When a student is able to be okay and follow the rules, they go back to the Buddy Room, then back to the Safe Seat, and finally back to their classroom seat. 8
PBiS • The main part of PBiS is POSITIVE. We are
trying to catch kids making good choices.• We want kids to be able to…
– Take good care of themselves even when they are angry, sleepy, excited, etc.
– Make good choices even when others are not.– Follow directions even when they don’t want
to.
• These are goals for LIFE, not just for school.
9
New Attendance Number!• If you know your student is going to be late to
school or absent, please do not call the office or nurse.
• Please call by 8:30
• We need students name, teachers name, grade level and reason for absence.

Inclement Weather• It is district policy that we will go outside
for recess unless:• It is raining or snowing.• The temperature is below 15 degrees Fahrenheit• The wind chill is below 0.
That means we go out to recess even when it’s REALLY cold. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately when that happens!
Before you leave…• I need an email for each family. If you already have
one, please let me know. If you need help setting up a free account, I would be more than happy to help.
• Correspondence will happen via email more this year. • Sign up for a fall conference if you already know a
day/time that works best for your schedule.• Make sure you have signed in at the door so I know
who was here tonight. • Any questions?
