While I didn’t grow up in South Dakota, it’s safe to say that I can now call our beautiful state home. Having accepted the role of Technical/Executive Director for the South Dakota State Soccer Asso-ciation, I am extremely excited to be back after two years away to continue to grow the beautiful game in our great state.

Since leaving South Dakota in 2015, the landscape of soccer in our state has un-dergone a number of changes. From new US Soccer initiatives for player develop-ment, the growth of our ODP program, multiple coaching education opportuni-ties, implementation of new tourna-ments and events throughout the entire state to hosting the USYSA Regional Championships in late June. The list goes on! There is so much we can be excited about when it comes to youth soccer here in South Dakota.

While the game will be ever changing, I believe SDSSA at its core is to serve all of you as we adapt to changes, obstacles and ideas that shape soccer in our state. This service comes in the form of guiding and nurturing your organization to pro-mote our sport in a way that

fosters learning, enjoyment, competition and life long soccer fans.

I look forward to renewing old friend-ships and to beginning new ones. From players, coaches, referees, administra-tors, parents and more, our success in ensuring our players and members have a positive experience is only possible through community and togetherness.

    Winning & Losing With

    Class

by Steve Kehm: SDSSA Director of Player

    Development

After spending the weekend in Rapid City

at State cup I have a few observations I

would like to share about our game and

how lucky we are to have it.

First of all congratulations and HUGE

thank you must go out to the Black Hills

Rapids who did a phenomenal job of

hosting the event. From the largest to the

smallest detail the hosts were spot on!

The facilities (what a beautiful new com-

plex) were exceptional and the organiza-

tion of the event was fantastic! Second it

was an honor and a pleasure to watch the

kid’s and their families from our great

    State compete for championships with

    class and dignity.

When your child’s team wins, it’s thrilling!

Everyone from coaches and players to

parents and fans are excited. When they

lose, it can be gut-wrenching. You can just

    feel the disappointment, frustration and

sadness coming from the field. But it’s in

these moments of winning and losing that

we can teach, encourage, and model good

    sportsmanship.

    Win With Class

The teams that won, won with class they

    understood the following:

    It’s an extraordinary accomplishment and

it reflects the hard work you put in. But

    remember that your winning performance

speaks for itself, so resist the urge to

gloat. Your opponent worked hard and

played hard. In fact, without your oppo-

nent, you’d never have the win and you

wouldn’t feel so accomplished if the chal-

lenge wasn’t a tough one. So instead of

taunting, mocking or in any way demean-

ing the losing team, shake hands and ear-

nestly thank them for playing the game.

Winning with class isn’t just for athletes

and coaches. It goes for parents in the

stands as well. Shake hands with fans of

the opposing team, thank officials for their

hard work during the game, cheer for

both teams when they leave the field, and

    stay positive.

    Lose With Class

Losing can be tough, especially in close

games. It’s also really tough when the

game felt like it really mattered: champi-

onship games, playoff berths or undefeat-

ed records on the line. No one likes to

lose. But when we do, it’s important to

lose with class. While it might be

tempting to blame your teammates for

the loss, try not to. It also might be

tempting to blame the officials or the oth-

er side’s play as the reason you lost the

game. But afterwards we often realize

that we lost the game because of multiple

factors, not just one person or one call.

The 2003 Boys bracket came down to a

shoot-out that went to extra penalties.

Both sides exhibited absolute class when

it was over. The winning team was heard

talking about what a great opponent they

had played and the losing teams coach

referenced how the team they lost to

would represent the State well at Presi-

dent’s Cup. That is the epitome of win-

ning and losing with class. Great job by all

    the players, parents, relatives, friends,

officials and volunteers on a great State

    Cup!

    CORNER KICK

    By Rex Rolfing, SDSSA President

We apologize for the late issue of our May

newsletter, we had hoped to get this out to

you sooner. A lot has been going on with

your association that I want to tell you about.

On May 1st a group of us traveled to Fargo,

ND to discuss how to reorganize the North-

ern States Soccer League. After a lot of good

    conversation with representatives from

North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota,

we agreed that two levels of the league

would allow for more diverse and appropri-

ate competition. It should be a great league

for teams/associations to do some traveling

but not have your entire weekend taken up.

We are looking at host locations in Eastern

South Dakota, Eastern North Dakota and

    Western Minnesota. Moving forward, we

plan to discuss the NSSL structure with Direc-

    tors and Administrators throughout our

state, as we believe many of them can find

benefit from the NSSL. The new NSSL struc-

ture and start of the leagues games will begin

in the Spring of 2018. Please be on the look

out for more information in the coming

    months.

On May 6th I traveled to Kansas City, MO to

meet with other presidents and executive

directors and Chris Moore (CEO of USYSA) to

help determine the direction we want to go

in the future. Standardization was a big topic

as it seems we all would like to have a level

pitch to work off of. There is also talk of

some reorganization around the four regions

to help with that standardization. We em-

phasized to them that state associations get

their representation from the regions for the

most part and we don’t want to be displaced

into a lesser role than we currently have. We

were heard and a task force is being set up to

look at all of the options.

Congratulations to the Black Hills Rapids and

Rapid City for hosting a very successful State

Cup and President’s Cup. We have heard

nothing but great things about the facility

and the management of the tournament.

    Good Work and Thanks.

I am also working with Dale Weiler and Jason

Wear on how we will communicate and man-

age the state office. Right now Jason remains

in Mitchell at the official office of SDSSA and

Dale will be moving into a small office here in

Sioux Falls. He can be reached at 651-503-

    8927.

Thanks again for allowing me to be part of

    this wonderful organization.

    For the kids

    Rex Rolfing – President

PS: Chris Moore, (CEO of USYSA) will be our

special guest at the AGM to be held in Sioux

Falls on November 17-19th. Plan on attend-

    ing this great event.

    By Jason Wear, SDSSA

    Administrator

    Charles was nominated

by his peers to be inter-

    viewed for this month’s

    article due to his out-

    standing volunteer work

    with the Black Hills Rap-

ids. In the last five years, he has been a cor-

nerstone for the club stepping up to assist

with all the clubs needs and played a key role

in the building of the Dakota Fields Sports

    Complex.

Charles Culbertson, is the President of the

Black Hills Rapids Soccer Club. Charles has

been the President of the club for the last

three years. He has been with the Rapid City

    Youth Soccer League/Rushmore SC/Black

Hills Rapids SC for eight years. One of his fa-

vorite parts of being involved in soccer is

“watching the kids laugh, play, and have a

    good time.”

Charles’s first involvement with the beautiful

game started back in 1980, while playing in

Chattanooga, TN, in his youth. He played as a

central defender but always wanted to be a

striker. Growing up, his favorite player was

none other than the great Pele. “He was

creative. He basically invented how to be

    creative” said Charles.

Charles has been part of the game for many

years as a youth player, a coach and referee.

His current favorite players are world famous

Lionel Messi and U.S. Goalkeeper Tim How-

ard. “Messi plays hard, always has a good

attitude, and it shows out on the field.” As

for USMNT keeper, “Tim Howard is my favor-

ite U.S. player. He has overcome Tourette’s

Syndrome and my younger son has Tou-

rette’s. He is inspiring.” Charles enjoys

    cheering for Premier League powerhouse,

Manchester United, and of course his favor-

ite MLS team is the Colorado Rapids.

If you are out west visiting the beautiful Back

Hills, and get a chance to stop by the brand

new Dakota Fields Sports Complex, you will

probably find Mr. Culbertson, at work, fixing

a soccer net or helping clean up a mess. Take

a minute and shake the hand of one of Black

    Hills Rapids most appreciated volunteers,

    Charles Culbertson.

Thanks for all that you do Charles, we’ll see

    you out on the pitch!

Charles is married to his wife, Jeri, and to-

gether they have three children; daughter,

Melody (18), and sons, Chase (16) and Logan

    (13).
