A 2007 study published in SPINE by Drs. Dolan and Weinstein concluded that observation only or bracing showed no clear advantage of either approach. Furthermore one can not recommend one approach over another to prevent surgery. They gave the recommendation for bracing a grade "D" relative to observation only because of "troublingly inconsistent or inconclusive studies on any level."

Since 1991, bracing has not been recommended for children with AIS at this center.

“If bracing does not reduce the proportion of children with AIS who require surgery for cosmetic improvement of their deformity, it cannot be said to provide a meaningful advantage to the patient or the community.”

“hi there, i spent several years in and out of a brace and body cast, there isn’t a lot you can do to get used to it, however use your time out of the brace wisely, i used to go swimming, or dance classes. also stick with it, because i didn’t keep it on as i should have done and the doctor could tell, he said i was wasting his time and he put me in a body cast for six months at a time.” liz.x
