These words come from the final paragraph of The Declaration of Independence. I’m no history buff, but I got chills when I recently read this historical document. Yes, I read the whole darn thing. You should, too; it’s fascinating. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation.

Okay, this may all seem kinda boring and you’re probably wondering what the point is here. There is no point (well, maybe a little one). The Fourth Of July is a true American holiday. It doesn’t get any more American than this. They don’t celebrate the fourth of July in Uruguay or India or even Canada. Fourth of July is an American tradition, which will be marked by parades, fireworks and barbeques across the nation.

Here in 4S Ranch, we have grown and evolved to the point that we are even having our very own fire-works! Del Norte High School is opening up the sta-dium to our community and putting on the first annual 4S Ranch fireworks show! How cool is that? Doors open at 7 pm, fireworks at dusk. The Fourth of July in 4S Ranch is hoppin’ this year. You can spend the day at the Community Pool; residents are FREE from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be a Carnival at Linear Park from 1 to 4 pm complete with jumpies, games, crafts and food.

Whether you hang out here in 4S Ranch or find yourself vacationing in a more distant locale, I hope you have fun this Fourth of July holiday and enjoy all that makes this holiday uniquely our own!

4s ranch Kids go far in Pitch, hit, & run contests

Pitch, Hit, & Run is an annual event hosted by Major League Baseball in all 30 baseball cities. This was the first year softball was included. Kids are required to pitch to a target, hit off a tee for distance and accuracy, and do a timed run from second to home base.

Makenna Grewe won the G13/14 division in 4S Ranch and moved on to the sectionals which were held in San Marcos. She won sectionals leaving her in the top 3 in San Diego for the 13/14 year-olds, which qualified her for the Team Competition at PETCO Park. Makenna ended up winning there as well. It’s all a comparative numbers game at this point, but if she finishes in the top 3 out of all 30, she will go to

Nationals which are held at the MLB All-Star game. Stay tuned for Makenna’s results in the August issue.

Rey Buccat, B13/14 and Ryan Hsu B11/12 also won in their respective divisions. Rey in Rancho Bernardo, then at sectionals in Kit Carson Park and Ryan first at 4S and then sectionals at Jackie Robinson’s YMCA. This allowed them to proceed to the Team Competition at PETCO Park where they placed 3rd. Unfortunately for them, the journey ended at PETCO, but it was an impressive journey and a memorable accomplishment.

Volleyball Champs

Volleyball is growing by leaps and bounds (no pun intended) at our Boys & Girls Club here is 4S Ranch. Led by Director Nate Fenlason, this year the 6th – 8th grade division Spring League had six teams! All teams played hard, but in the end, it was Team Random Girls that came out on top, both in league play and in the final tournament. Going into the tournament with a record of 7–1, they were definitely the team to beat. The 10 girls on the team, Randi Buccat, Stephanie Legault, Liberty Taylor, Karli Renken, Morgan Moody, Sophie Ajang, Leilani Fallentine, Amanda Medin, Rachel Behling, and Kaitlin Trieu, were flawless throughout the season. They consistently supported each other, gave 110% at each game and never once considered losing as an option.

We’d also like to congratulate Team Frost Bite for finishing in second place – a worthy opponent and a terrific team!

A special thank you to all the coaches who stepped up enabling the program to have so many teams this year. It’s wonderful to be able to help support kids in their effort to stay active and learn sportsmanship.

Summer Volleyball Camp at Del norte High School

Nighthawks Volleyball is proud to announce its first annual summer camp for boys & girls grades 6th through 9th. Players can expect to learn proper tech-niques, basic team functions and, most importantly, have tons of fun!

4S Ranch Community Pool will be open to the residents of 4S Ranch on July 4th, compli-ments of the 4S Ranch HOA. Residents can swim for FREE from 10 am – 4 pm. Guest(s) of residents are $5 each.

Splash Park Survey

During the warm summer months, homeowners are quick to point out that the splash feature at Pioneer Park is overused by guests and visitors who may not be attended by a member host. One of the solutions currently under discus-sion by the HOA Board is to enclose the area, and there are many other ideas to consider. But first, we need your input! Please take a few moments to visit www.4SConnect.com and complete a short Splash Park Survey. Our goal is to make the amenities in 4S Ranch enjoyable for everyone and we need your opinion. This will help save the Association time and money!

rancho bernardo library offers Free Computer Classes

Free computer classes teaching Internet and email basics as well as more advanced topics like Microsoft Office are being offered every Wednesday from 6 to 7 pm at the Rancho Bernardo Branch Library (17110 Bernardo Center Drive). Volunteer instructor, Jerry Goldstein, who brings 30 years experience to the task, welcomes all skill levels. Participants range from absolute beginners to advanced library staff wanting to improve their mas-tery of spreadsheets. To attend, sign up at least one day in advance at the library’s information desk or phone in your reservation to 858-538-8163.

July 4th Carnival at linear Park

Join us for an exciting afternoon at the 3rd Annual July 4th Carnival! This year’s carnival will be bigger and bet-ter than ever! We are closing down the streets on either side of Linear Park so we can spread out and bring in more jumps, games and crafts. The Carnival will be from 1-4 pm at Linear Park. Residents can pre-order tickets at www.4SConnect.com. Pre-sale Tickets are $6 per child. Adults 18 and older as well as chil-dren 2 and under are free. Tickets for non-residents and at the door are $10 per child. Food will be available for purchase.

FIreworKS!

Don’t miss the first annual July 4th HOA Fireworks presentation which will be held at Del Norte High School! Field seating is free. Limited premium grass seating and deluxe stadium seating is available. Bring your blankets and hang out! NO chairs on the field. The parking lot will be run by the Del Norte Football Team. Suggested donation is $5 per car. Parking will be limited so please carpool or walk if you can! Doors open at 7 pm. Food will be for sale at the Stadium and all proceeds for food sales will benefit Del Norte athletic and academic clubs. The fireworks are presented by the 4S Ranch Master HOA and Silver Sponsors are Team Q of RE/MAX in 4S Ranch. The 4S Ranch AA Little League Championship game was played on May 27. Coach Bob Hartung’s Yankees faced Chris Deck’s Phillies. These were the top two teams from league play. In season play, these two teams battled through some tight contests and the Championship game was no different. The Phillies went up early 1 – 0 in the bottom of the second to take the early lead. The Yankees battled back with some big hits to take a 3 to 1 lead. The final few innings were a display of outstanding defense from both teams. Both teams battled like true champions, but at the end of six innings it was the Yankees who came out on top. Yankees 3 and Phillies 1.

Del Sur Farmers market & Family Festival is a Huge Success

Close to 2,000 people attended the grand opening of the Del Sur Farmers Market. People came from all over 4S and Del Sur to visit the over 70 vendors who were in attendance.

Over the summer, be sure to do your “One Stop Shopping” at the new Del Sur Farmers Market, open every Thursday, from 3 to 7 pm, year round. Located at the corner of Camino Del Norte and Lone Quail Rd., this market is growing larger each week.

Cherries, blueberries, peaches, and corn are in, and strawberries are still sweet and delicious. Quality farmers and vendors continue to join the mar-ket featuring homemade salami and endless varieties of cheeses. Grab the kids and come on down to the farmers market for lunch or dinner, at covered tables. Listen to the professional entertainers, and turn the kids loose in the fun “zone”. Sample your way through the market and check out all the arts and craft booths.

Girls Softball all Stars

The three 4S Ranch All Star teams just competed in the Mira Mesa 2010 Runway Classic. The girls 8 and under team recorded their first win led by Coach Kevin Peterson. The girls 10 and under team finished pool play as the number two seed in their bracket led by co-managers Ken Prentiss and Michael Roberts. The 10U team would like to thank Dave Smith from Bayside Hilton Hotels and Chris Deck from DEC Engineers for donating $1000 to buy the girls rolling bags for their equipment. The 12U team, led by Chris Scioscia, is a young team on the rise and has been very competitive in tournament play. Both the 10U team and the 12U team have three tourna-ments left and end the season playing Districts over the July 4th weekend. Congratulations to all the girls competing!

Summer Youth baseball Camps boost Players abilities

Baseball players age 7-12 at all levels can boost their abilities at weekly five-day summer camps throughout the summer. Camps are held at the Frozen Ropes’ state-of-the-art indoor facility located at 10710 Thornmint Road. Camps are 8:30 am to 3 pm, offering hitting, throwing, catching and fielding skills as well as coached “game” play.

The cost is $275 for five full days (8:30 am -3 pm) or $150 for five half-days (8:30-11:30 am or 12-3 pm). Single day enrollments are welcome ($50 half day/$75 full day).

Brian Phan, President of Del Norte High School Red Cross Club was recently honored by the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties with a recognition award for the year 2009/2010.

The Red Cross Club at Del Norte High School has been busy with many community activities:

• Red Ribbon Week at Del Norte High School with RN Nurse Patricia Renaldo from Palomar/Pomerado Hospital Network demonstrating Fatal Vision Goggles.

• Thanksgiving Food Drive at Del Norte High School. First prize win-ner for collecting the most food.

• VA hospital visit with San Diego Red Cross Youth Clubs, VA Medical Center in La Jolla.

• Attended CPR workshop and received CPR certification from American Red Cross.

• Many volunteer sessions at the Food Bank and Feeding America, processing food packages.

• Received Certificate of Recognition from the office of State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher

“It has been such a rewarding year for all of us. Our Red Cross Club is considered the most active student club at Del Norte High School this year. Thanks so much to all of our members,” says Brian Phan, President.

Congratulations to the Avengers Soccer GU13-Eckel team for winning the Poway Country Shootout Tournament during the Memorial Weekend. They are the first Avengers Soccer team to win a tournament in the Soccer Club’s first year of existence. The team will be playing in several more tourna-ments during the summer before playing in the AA-A North Division of the Presidio Soccer League. Most of the young ladies go to Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch. Brigantine Announces Annual “Taste of the Wild” Food and Wine Festival

The Brigantine Family of Restaurants announces the return of its most popular food and wine pairing event of the year. The Brigantine’s “Taste of the Wild” features Wild Alaska Seafood specialties, paired with fine wines from La Crema. This promotion runs through July 14, 2010. Katie Westbrook has done it! She has accomplished her goal of earning her Girl Scout Silver Award! Katie Westbrook, a 14 year-old 9th grader, has been working towards this award since she started as a Cadette Girl Scout in 7th grade. There were quite a few prerequisite requirements that needed to be met before she could even start her final project. After she finally completed the prep work for this award, she started working on the true

goal: to install signs for the Archery Course at the local Girl Scout camp in Julian – Camp Winacka. She has wanted to do this ever since she was a 4th grade Junior Girl Scout and she and her troop wanted to find their way to

the Archery course during a camping trip. They almost got lost going to this course, and she said to herself at that time, “Why aren’t there signs to point the way?”

Well, she made the signs with her grandpa, who’s a woodworker and has a complete woodshop at his home in Idyllwild. On June 12, she and a few of her fellow Girl Scouts went up to the campground and installed the well-made, attractive signs. All signs

are up and currently directing campers to the Archery Course! It was quite a successful expedition and an exciting and satisfying moment for Katie. It’s an accomplishment she won’t soon forget!

Katie’s Girl Scout leader, Louise deGrandpre, and her Girl Scout advi-sor, Fran Styles, were both instrumental in helping her realize her goal. Katie has been a Girl Scout since first grade Brownies and earned her Bronze Award when she was in 6th grade. We look forward to hearing about Katie’s next goal, which can only be one thing: GOLD!

oak Valley middle School music boosters awarded

$5110 for Smart music Program

Funding for this program will make Smart Music accessible to the 400 students in band. Smart Music is a program students and teach-ers can utilize with over 5,000 exercises for students; scales, arpeggios, twisters, improvisation, and ear training. Practicing at home with smart music, students will be able to do self-assessments and submit electroni-cally; they will be able to enter practice time automatically online as well as access band and orchestra music from home on their computer. They can also use the program to create CDs as class projects and practice solos for festivals.

Practice logs would be automated with the program cutting down on the time it takes to grade the paper form. It is expected that the pro-gram will allow more student participation in local solo and ensemble festival since students will not need to hire pianists and will be able to use the program as their accompaniment.

on June 10, members of the 4S ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation gathered at The reserve Community room to cel-

ebrate and award $15,000 to deserving projects in 4S ranch. This marks the third year of granting awards for the organization. In

a mere three-year period of time, the Foundation has granted $35,500 to the community while continuing to build a permanent

endowment of $31,785 that will benefit the community in perpetuity. after a process whereby applications were accepted, site

visits were made and the field of applicants was narrowed, the entire membership voted to fund the following projects:

Friends of the 4S ranch library awarded $2090 for

Technology expansion

Funding will allow Friends of the 4S Ranch Library to support the 4S library with technology to help start online book clubs specifi-cally targeting teens and children. A major goal is to use technology as a medium to reach a variety of populations including those of varying ages, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Equipment purchased will be used for projects that will benefit adults, seniors and learners of English of Second Language. By provid-ing this technology, Friends of the 4S Ranch Library will help patrons extend their knowledge with the availability of these multimedia tools as well as revitalize the community’s awareness of the 4S Ranch library as a community resource with access to a variety of information resources.

Stone ranch elementary School awarded $7800 for

“G” Computer lab upgrade

Funding will be used by Stone Ranch Elementary School to pur-chase six additional computers and upgrade the wiring requirements for the computers in the G Computer Lab. The computer lab upgrade is to service the anticipated increase in class sizes next year in grades K-3rd (approximately 600 kids). With the proposed increase to class sizes, it is not possible to serve an entire primary class in the current computer lab. By updating the computer lab, it is expected that an entire class of students in grades K - 3 will be able to use the lab.

The goal of the members of the 4S Ranch ~ Del Sur Community Foundation is to leverage small resources to have a great impact. people in your neighborhood

Okay, reality check. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and imagine being a young child living in a home that the police visited every single day. Imagine living with an abusive father in an environment so dismal your self esteem was crushed beyond belief. I know, I know, it sounds dreadful and it sounds like something out of a TV show, but it was Rich Newman’s reality. Somehow he persevered and as soon as he was old enough to leave, he fled so fast he left a wind chill behind him.

It’s no surprise that Rich was introverted as a child, but he had one little gem in his back pocket that no one could take away from him. Mrs. Kopka, his fourth grade teacher, was noth-ing short of a miracle. She guided, supported and presented him with opportunities he never had. He still hears her words, “You can do it, Rich!” He soon discovered that he was good at learning and he began to believe that he did indeed have more inside himself than the prevailing point of view. From that moment forward, he lost himself in learning and at 17 even though he did not know how he was going to do it, he became a college student. He was a homeless college student, but a college student none-the-less.

Rich earned his undergraduate degree at U of FLA and his graduate degree from Florida State. He was set to pursue a career in economic development, but days before he was to leave for Arizona, he found out he was chosen to be part of a very select group called Teach For America. The idea of Teach For America is to recruit the nation’s most promising future lead-ers (outstanding college graduates) with diverse backgrounds and ask them for a two-year com-mitment of teaching in urban and rural public schools in low-income areas. Rich committed to the program because of his incredible desire to give back. He was placed in such impover-ished areas that he had to take different routes to school every day and was constantly looking over his shoulder.

A lot happened following his two years with Teach For America. Rich left his indelible mark on several public schools, received his Doctorate in Education at USD, and joined forces with

the nationally recognized Wallace Foundation to promote school reform around the country. Rich eventually left the Wallace Foundation when he realized his heart was really in teaching.

Today, Rich Newman is best known as the Principal of Monterey Ridge Elementary School and there is very little he enjoys more than serving in this role. Why? Because education and all it represents is what shaped him and very literally saved his life. Rich feels that “education is the core of social change.”

Now happily settled in Carlsbad with his wife, Nicole, and son, Dylan (8), Rich is not looking to change his life any time soon. Dylan attends Monterey Ridge to be close to dad. The Newmans are big campers, espe-cially trips to the redwoods. They love being outdoors, biking, hiking and going to the beach with their dog. They are voracious readers and even have their own reading competition called “Newman’s Book Challenge.” Dylan has won every year since they started the challenge.

Rich Newman is a very personable, grateful, energetic person. His eyes have a fire inside them that fortunately was not extinguished by his rather complicated and challenging upbringing. His accomplishments are many, but he remains humble and dedicated towards making sure education is at the forefront of our society.

Bike Permits

We feel that responsible boys and girls in grades 4 and 5 who have their parents’ consent should have the privilege of riding their bikes to and from school. If you decide to let you child ride his/her bike, please ensure that you have a signed bike permit on file, and that your child is in either 4th or 5th grade. Students may not ride bikes to school in grades K – 3, even if accompanied by an adult. Thank you for your cooperation and you may pick-up a bike permit form at the front office.

Parent Partners - coordinates the much needed volunteers for the classrooms (last year was the first year we did this and it was a huge success). This also lets 6th grade parents know that volunteering in classrooms does not end in elementary school.

Enjoy Fireworks from Del Norte Stadium!

The Annual July 4th HOA fireworks presentation will be held at Del Norte High School! Field seating is free. Limited premium grass seating and deluxe stadium seating is available. Del Norte Learn-to-Swim Program

Del Norte is offering one more 2-week session with morning and after-noon lessons: Levels 1-6 $70 - Session 3: July 12 - July 23.

Morning classes are at 9 am, 9:35 am and 10:10 am. Afternoon classes are at 1 pm, 1:35 pm and 2:10 pm. All classes are 30 minutes long.

Water aerobics are offered during swim lesson class times for moms/dads so you can get a workout while your children are taking a swim lesson. These classes are offered through the Poway Adult School at http://www.powayusd.com/pusdctae/.

In conjunction with Earth Week, our 5th graders planted a garden on the playground in memory of Mrs. Skoom-Ellis’ mother. Black Mountain Ranch donated an additional tree and 12 shrubs to the garden. Armstrong Nurseries donated the flowers. The students also made stepping stones with stars to mark the area. Stop by and enjoy this beautiful addition.

Summer Recycling Opportunities

Over the summer you can set up spe-cial recycling bins at home to collect all your summertime bottles, cans and Capri Sun-type drink pouches (any brand is acceptable). Over the 2009 – 2010 year, we successfully raised hundreds of dollars for our school. If everyone saved their recyclables over the summer, it would be a great way to start the 2010-2011 school year.

Jog-a-thon was a Huge Success!

The Jog-a-thon was a fundraiser designed to fund a “Playground Partners” program for the 2010/11 school year. The “Playground Partners” program provides trained staff to lead physical activities and sports to keep our students involved in safe, organized and fun games during lunch recess. The grand total we needed to raise was $5,800. Congrats to all Del Sur jog-gers! We reached our goal and will invite two YMCA Playground Partner staff members to our school next year! Way to go Del Sur Elementary!

Th e Backyard PicnicSummertime is almost synonymous with the word picnic. Instead of

planning a regular event with elegant dishes and formal seating, why not try a fun, family-style picnic instead? It’s a casual, fun way to mix

things up with friends and neighbors of all ages.First, determine where you will set your get-together up. Ensure that

there is adequate shade, which can be from surrounding trees, a gazebo, pop-up canopy or patio umbrella. A few days beforehand, confirm that there aren’t any ants or other critters in the nearby vicinity to crash your party. A quick sweep and weeding session is also a good idea to neaten things up!

Whether you have grass or concrete, make sure that guest seating is comfortable. Lawns can make do with a standard tablecloth; but if you have a hard surface, use a quilt and some throw pillows, or outdoor floor and chair cushions, to add softness and encourage lingering. They will get dirty so make sure they’re machine washable! Scatter some large trays around, so that platters of food can be placed on something steady, and not risk getting knocked over. Having several also means that each guest has somewhere to place their drink while eating.

To save on the waste of disposable tableware, use it sparingly! There’s nothing wrong with offering melamine plates, plastic cups and stainless steel cutlery that’s already stashed in your kitchen. Avoid using throwaway containers to serve with; sending food out in baking tins and glass cookware is fine so long as everyone is just a little bit careful. Have large washable napkins for visitors to use in their laps, but because food can be messy, paper napkins are also an essential to have on hand. This will greatly reduce the large bags of trash that spring up after an outdoor party, which, environmen-tally speaking, is the responsible thing to do. If you are serving cans of pop and bottles of juice, have a small separate bin for recyclables as well.

In terms of the menu, spend less time playing host and more time hav-ing fun by preparing strategically. Haul out the cooler and have drinks on ice, whether they are in single servings or in pitchers. Cook and chill dishes beforehand that are designed to be perfect picnic fare. These are foods that aren’t delicate, and can be served at room temperature. Sandwiches, chips and dip, individual tortes and quiches, sliced quick breads; these are all solid choices that are easy to serve and eat. Pasta and grain dishes that bind

together are another great option for a main course. Nuts and dried berries are a healthy starter or side. Cookies, bars, even chilled fruit pops make for delicious and portable desserts. Avoid fare such as lettuce salads, soups or thin sauces – these aren’t easy to keep or eat. If you can’t eat it with a fork or your hand, then things are already getting too complicated.

Because you’re eating so low to the ground, take care that any entertain-ment you plan doesn’t run into where guests are seated. Why not play some popular board games, or dominoes, chess, bingo or charades? Some can be played between two people, others can be enjoyed in groups. Look up some party ice-breakers that would be appropriate for your attendees; these are a fun way to get to know your visitors and always generate a lot of laughs. It’s also a perfect time for someone to bring their guitar and play, whether as a featured performer, or just as a pleasant accompaniment to everything else going on. Be creative and flexible, as people may just be happiest to have a chat and catch up in small groups.

In a way, this era of staycations makes a backyard picnic all the more logical. What makes it so special is that element of casual entertainment; it means a level of comfort often only reserved for your most special of friends and neighbors. It’s also a great way to entertain at the last-minute – get some takeout, grab a blanket, make a quick call to invite others over and have a great time! After all, it’s summertime.

Ah, summer. Even though we live in San Diego where the climate is moderate year-round, sum-mer is still a season of warmer ocean water, soft

breezes, sunny days and relaxed schedules. We’re wearing less clothing and showing a little skin – why not have your home do the same and dress down, in keeping with the weather? Here’s a few ways to make your indoor rooms as inviting as a hammock under a shady tree!

Start by removing some of the fancier, more decorative accessories. Blank space – on a table, a couch, or a wall, is immediately more calming. So instead of multiple pieces of artwork or pillows, pick three you like best and store the rest.

Switch out (or Is That Switchfoot?)

In surfing, “switchfoot” has to do with switching your feet and take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It’s about change and movement and in this case, a different way of approaching life and decorating. Replace formality with more organic elements. Put away the crystal vase, and use a glazed jug. Replace figurines with sea shells. Brass, silver and silk can give way to hammered copper, pewter and hemp. Trade down your design ele-ments, and get in touch with a freer side of your home’s personality.

Stumped as to what coordinates with what you already have? For décor that has navy and chocolate brown, try lime green. Deep red and medium blue hues pair nicely with orange. Beiges can be transformed with the pop of almost any clear citrus tone. And for instant warm weather chic, think blue. Pale, translucent, watery blues; bright, clean, turquoise blue; deep seafaring navy blue - there’s a blue to fit almost any décor and help bring the season into your home.

Give It Texture

Sea-grass baskets, woven paper pillows, raffia – the common element that these design details share is texture. Slightly rough-hewn, matte yet full of interest, this can provide balance, contrast and interest when other pieces in the room feature leather or fabric upholstery. Add a sisal rug. Tuck magazines into a picnic basket for storage. Try a dash of wicker or rattan with a small table or side chair – painted, for extra color and informality. Slip on Something Comfortable

For an instant fix, toss slipcovers over your couch and chairs. They’re washable, comfortable and a great way to add temporary color if your space is neutral, or tone down the out-of season pattern your furniture may already have. Slipcovers allow you to change your mind without changing out your entire room – and who can’t use that kind of flexibility these days?

Just for fun, try re-arranging some of the furniture in your space. Open up intimate seating by spacing pieces apart; conversely, if everything seems to be lined up against walls, pull couches and chairs out into the room. When it comes down to it, summer should be a time of easy living and simple pleasures. The days are longer, friends are visiting, and if you’re lucky, your family has fewer activities on the schedule. Bryan is a native San Diegan who lives here in 4S Ranch with his fiancée Trish. He used to ride BMX bikes as a kid and could never really get enough of the two wheeled apparatus. He started working at Black Mountain Bicycles (BMB) as a teenager – bike assembly, minor repairs and sales – graduated from SDSU with a degree in Marketing and became a full time staff member. Eventually, with all the time and effort (and money) he invested in Black Mountain Bicycles, it was a calm transition from partner to sole ownership.

Bryan is a quiet guy. He is not really comfortable talking about himself, but he is quite comfortable talking about his bike shop. Black Mountain Bicycles is not really a “bike shop” which implies a small “mom & pop” oper-ation. It’s actually the largest retail bicycle store in San Diego, but you get the friendly “shop” feeling when you visit the store. Black Mountain Bicycles has served San Diego cyclists of all ages and skill levels, for over 39 years. Bryan laughs because he can see Black Mountain (actual mountain) looking south from his backyard at home and he can see Black Mountain looking north from his store.
